Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

@ForZanyAquaViewer don't you find it heavy for everyday wear though?

It’s not something that I’ve thought about, but I think I like a ‘chunky’ bag, if that makes any sense? Enjoy a bit of heft.

@PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat , no she wouldn't. She'd probably look effortlessly elegant in them like her MIL would.

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

My first thought was Cambridge but I could also go Brighton or Scotland/Edinburgh.

The late Queen also looked great in overalls.

That’s a beautifully fitted and carefully belted jumpsuit. Very flattering and elegant, I agree.

These are Lucy and Yaks. It’s the dropped crotch which gives a full-nappy effect on even the neatest of bottoms Grin

The Gen Z council have spoken about sock length. If you don’t want to look like a millennial then avoid trainer liner socks. 😁. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/nov/07/how-to-spot-a-millennial-you-can-tell-by-the-length-of-our-socks

As a Gen x’er who has never worn trainer liners I approve. I happily wear bright red crew socks with Mary Janes and a skirt. Dh looked at my feet a bit oddly when he saw me in that combo the other day 👍

HelloCanYouHearMe · 15/02/2025 18:31

Leggings, sock, Birkenstock clogs, long line puffer coat

EcruCardigan · 15/02/2025 18:33

@PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat , I should have cropped out the hideous pink converse Blush

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 18:23

@NotAlwaysasitSeems I do use a shoulder bag but it's fabric. Fashion keeps trying to bring shoulder bags back and I've been tempted by the suede squashy ones in the shops at the moment. But cross body and backpacks are so practical.

I have one of those fabric fold up ones I sometimes keep in my pocket or backpack for emergencies/shopping, or the school run if they have extra things. I'm definately not the epitome of fashion that's for sure! 😂
I do like those squishy bags too, I had a one like that, but holding dc's hands and everything else it just slipped off my shoulder and became annoying. I ended up getting a leather backpack, which can be worn different ways, if I need to carry anything other than my phone and keys. I think I'm too used to having my arms free now, a larger bag would just encourage me to take things I don't need everywhere.

Two camps here. Either Sweaty Betty leggings and other athleisure wear or the dressing gowns worn as coats (Dry robes) with crocs or ugg boots.

PeapodBurgundy · 15/02/2025 18:39

Sleeveless puffa coat, oversized hoodie, leggings/PJ bottoms, crocks/sliders with fluffy bed socks/sports socks with hair piled up in a pouffy bun on the top of the head secured with a massive hair clasp.

Oh believe me, I can spot a millennial in gen z clothing a mile off, and it isn't a good look. I'm not a fan of it on any age group though. What is it with those suede track suits with "juicy" written on the bottoms as well?😂
I'm pleased I'm not a gen z-er! The no socks look on the young men as well and short tight pants! Dh tried a pair of skinny jeans on for a laugh, and couldn't get them over his thighs.

A boiler suit is a world apart from dungarees!

OneFineDay13 · 15/02/2025 15:06

Yeah the mums around here all wear big long winter jackets. That's a given, but the one I really hate, is the mid length coats with no sleeves. 🤮

Gillet?

EcruCardigan · 15/02/2025 18:45

@PheasantPluckers , my Lucy & Yaks are boilersuits.

Princess Di's boilersuit may well have been tailored to fit her nicely.

Adanola hoodies, leggings, Ugg tasmans, baseball caps.

I wish converse would die out, a novelty at first revived from the 80s. The look is getting old now, and doesn't suit anybody over the age of about 20.

Literally noone wears them tho

couldabutdidnt · 15/02/2025 18:46

Your post immediately took me back to Monkey Music classes in Wimbledon! Instantly recognisable from that descriptor! I’d say most of the mummies there were early 40s rather than 30s though. All slim and polished.

I’m from nearby but not as posh an area. Round our ends, we wear crossbodies as standard which makes sense when rounding up small charges. Instagram says they’re now are deeply uncool when worn acrosss the body but we don’t care! You’ll see loads of leggings with boots, chunky jumpers and unapologetically mumsy ‘I love gin’ type tote bags. There’s a big SE Asian population round here and they’re a little cooler than the rest of us. Think A.P.C, smaller hand bags and chunkier footwear.

MumWifeOther · 15/02/2025 18:46

Think it’s def an age thing. Only older mums wear vejas.

Younger mums round here really only dress in athleisure wear and why not? So comfy and easy to style.

Also, white socks / longer socks with trainers are elite in the winter. Who wants cold ankles!?

Still afew going strong in dc's school, but they are becoming less, since the horrible gym socks look has appeared.

Ireland
Leggings, white socks, new balance shoes and a fleece - possibly 4th arq, dunnes or the one oneills does. And yes to lots of puffa coats

Also Irish and I came to write exactly this… it’s the mum uniform here for sure

BitOutOfPractice · 15/02/2025 18:51

ForZanyAquaViewer · 15/02/2025 14:50

Are the long white socks worn over the leggings? I don’t think I’ve seen that look before.

You haven’t seen this? Really? It’s everywhere here in Essex.

The late Queen also looked great in overalls.

Plus, she wasn't just "dressing up". She actually learned to be a mechanic.

CarolDunne · 15/02/2025 18:53

Dublin, Ireland
I only commented this to my husband today.

I was the only mother on the side line not wearing a long black puffer jacket with some sort of bulldog.

We really don't fit in😂
