I am seeing these in store and online in various retailers and think it could be a good weight for spring and different to the usual rain coat or denim jacket.
i saw a young woman wearing similar with wider leg jeans, suited her .
I am a lot older 😆 , youngest daughter said “ ugh “ so I thought I’d ask you lovely people

I remember similar jackets from the late 1970s. Didn't like them then! Next up gypsy skirts and espadrilles 😂

I think it’s one of those things that would look slightly “edgy” on young women but frumpy on older women.

SereneCapybara · 09/02/2025 08:03

DS works in high fashion - he is very style conscious but doesn't care about passing trends. He loves them. (Not sure if that helps.)

I remember them too but thought they were more of a hippy Indian cotton thing then?

Yes, they were. They were only really "in" with weekend hippy types (like me).

SophieStrange · 09/02/2025 12:01

I had one back in the 80s and only wore it for cleaning the horses. I think it had previously belonged to my grandma.

If as an adult you’re going to wear a quilted jacket in public, lean into it and get one from Schoffel.

It depends, I'm in my 60's and very slim so would probably look OK. I don't think they suit anyone who is overweight because they add bulk and are slightly oversized.

I wore quilted jackets in the 70's, wouldn't wear them again.

veraswaistcoat · 09/02/2025 14:10

@Doloresparton I think you are being a trifle disparaging in saying that you would suit it because you are very slim.

Sorry - I don’t like it at all. It looks like an oven glove!

You’re so right. I love the idea but somehow I feel (and probably look) like an oven glove the moment I put one on. They’re a bit frumpy.

You have to ask yourself, would Kate Middleton wear this? And if the answer is no, you put it down. 😆

CointreauVersial · 09/02/2025 19:31

I like the idea of quilted jackets, but they are less good in reality. I had a Monsoon one a few years back, but literally the only outfit that went with it was a white teeshirt and jeans, so i hardly ever wore it. It was a bit stiff/rigid, and wasn't remotely warm either (definitely a summer trend). I sold it on Vinted in the end.

I still find myself tempted by some of the jackets in the shops but have to remind myself that I won't get the wear out of it.

ThePoshUns · 09/02/2025 20:17

I agree @CointreauVersial . The one I bought last year, I was at a loss of what to wear it with. Like you it was jeans and a white tshirt. It made me look boxy and frumpy.

I’m also semi rural and like a confused meerkat in any clothing store

I think it's really nice, the jacket

I like this, I'm shocked as I usually hate anything even hinting at floral Grin

I do see the point - I think it's a style that works better on a slim frame. Other styles work better on curvier frames.

BeanAround · 09/02/2025 21:44

I like the jacket. Also ended up clicking through to a few other items on the M&S website and they actually have some decent stuff, more fashiony than I was expecting.

foreverbasil · 07/02/2025 15:17

Me too! I loved that jacket. I bought it from a market stall with money from my first Saturday job, happy days

I think the late 70s ones were better. Slightly longer and nicer colours. I had a patchwork type one in soft pinks and blues. I loved it. My mother hated it. I used to wear it with a tiered skirt and clogs.

veraswaistcoat · 10/02/2025 00:02

@BeanAround I disagree with you. The very fact that they are often loose cut and deconstructed is a plus.

They're a very 1970's thing but they were sold in independent hippy shops reeking of patchouli. I had a slightly longer , but more fitted one which closed with ties, black padded cotton with a cream lining.

echt · 10/02/2025 10:03

Fucking horrible.

I'm 70 and would rather wear an Adidas tracksuit top.

Poirot1983 · 10/02/2025 13:32

They're really classic and stylish, always liked them, never really owned one, though! I think would instantly smarten up jeans.

Ilovemyshed · 10/02/2025 14:15

Horrendous. Like Mary Berry. Just naff.

Cremeeggtime · 10/02/2025 14:50

That's very mean toward Mary Berry!

quirkychick · 10/02/2025 16:36

I think they've been around a while, I'm sure they were popular in the 00s too. I think the cut and how you wear it matters most.
The boxy cut with wide-legged jeans is a good look - I like the mix of an older, bohemian look with more modern styles. We have a very lovely Indian textile shop which sells these as they are traditional, though longer and more fitted.

HellofromJohnCraven · 07/02/2025 14:42

I looked like I was wearing nans bed jacket. However, I do have a comedy size chest on a small frame so lean into frump more easily than your average woman

That is such a great description of my figure challenges - I need fitted not to ‘lean into frump’ and my husband has occasionally muttered about bed jackets when I was trying out unstructured

whatawonderfultime · 10/02/2025 19:43

What I call granny chic, along with the long pleated skirts that grannies used to live in in the 90s.

quirkychick · 10/02/2025 20:32

@whatawonderfultime yes, it's what you wear it with. I wear quite a bit of secondhand and vintage and the trick is to mix with something more current. Wearing the jacket with wide-legged jeans and trainers as above, is a completely look.
