Are leather pencil skirts dated?

Hi all, I have a birthday coming up and would like to use my birthday money to buy a classic leather pencil skirt. I love the look of the green one Meghan Markle wore when she was still ‘in’ the working royal family. However that was quite a while ago now and I’m not sure if they are dated now. I don’t know if I would go for green or another colour. I’m 45 and want to have an up to date look. Any advice would be most welcome!

To be absolutely honest I'm not sure they've been in since the 80's 😬

Relaxaholic · 24/01/2025 18:51

@Showrr oof! Harsh 😆

If they suit your shape, a pencil skirt can look fabulous. Go for it!

MumInTheMitte · 24/01/2025 18:54

I think they are a timeless classic. Very chic.

Relaxaholic · 24/01/2025 18:55

I’m a wobbly size 8, with a small frame but also a tummy and round backside. Anything that comes in at the waist tends to suit me better that baggier looks

Honestly - for anyone who isn’t actually a clothes designer it’s probably better to be guided by what fashionable shops are currently selling, rather than prescribing what you want first and then looking for it.

For instance, these are what

Massimo Dutti has.

More upmarket, this is what

Net-a-Porter has.

PizzaPunk · 24/01/2025 18:58

They're very dated in my mind but that's because I'm 55 and the late 70s going into the 80s, only feels like about 20 years ago 😊

Relaxaholic · 24/01/2025 19:01

@PizzaPunk that’s what is making me pause- I love the look but rather than appearing fresh and classic, do I risk looking outdated and frumpy. I think I’d need to style it carefully

Supermodels on a catwalk can wear them. Nobody else should.

@Bepanthensavedmybumbum Is it the female equivalent of a man buying a sports car at 45? 😂

If it’s on the knee or above, nope. Leave it in the 80s.

Midi length, possibly with a split front, fabulous.

Full disclosure: I bought one just like this last year and wear it to work a lot!

Don’t be daft.

Overtheatlantic · 24/01/2025 19:12

They’re a classic but should not be worn as part of an all-leather outfit. Pair with a silk blouse or chunky cardigan?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2025 19:13

I think they can look nice if not clingy or too short and look especially good with a black turtleneck- just low key.

MrsJHernandez · 24/01/2025 19:14

I think people can wear anything they like these days and a leather skirt is timeless imo. If you like the skirt and are able to style it and pull it off, go for it.

Collette78 · 24/01/2025 19:14

I don’t believe in dated etc … if something suits you wear it! I think leather pencil skirts look nice with a jumper or shirt.

TheyCallMeMrsBug · 24/01/2025 19:15

I love them and think the green one is gorgeous.

I am not a fashionista at all though. I have the same figure as you describe and I would wear it.

Anand25 · 24/01/2025 19:15

I bought one (just below knee) last winter & wear it all the time
Seems pretty classic to me. I get LOADS of compliments as its a good shape for me and was actually £35 from M&S (not leather but synthetic)

Don't worry about looking dated
If they were last fashionable in the 80s, this is a long time ago.
'Dated' is things that were trendy 5-10 years ago maybe which look out of style

ElsaMars · 24/01/2025 19:18

I've ordered this one from Asda, cheap but hopefully chic, can't go wrong at £6! Recently lost weight so trying different things.

It’s a question of what you put on your feet. If you wear flat shoes or boots I don’t think a leather pencil skirt will work. I don’t wear heels, so no matter how much I like pencil skirts they can’t work for me

At least you know how to accessorise it when you wear it 😂

Pieceofpurplesky · 24/01/2025 19:20

As long as it's not like this you will be fine

Bepanthensavedmybumbum · 24/01/2025 19:21

@Pieceofpurplesky I don’t agree. I think you have to go all in to pull it off!
