Are leather pencil skirts dated?

Relaxaholic · 24/01/2025 18:45

Hi all, I have a birthday coming up and would like to use my birthday money to buy a classic leather pencil skirt. I love the look of the green one Meghan Markle wore when she was still ‘in’ the working royal family. However that was quite a while ago now and I’m not sure if they are dated now. I don’t know if I would go for green or another colour. I’m 45 and want to have an up to date look. Any advice would be most welcome!

I think they are a classic so go for it

Thisisthemomentforchange · 25/01/2025 00:39

I think pencil skirts are timeless. And if you have the right figure, very attractive.
But surely not in leather?
Really tacky.
But if that's what you want to wear It's your choice.

Timeless classic .

Ageist misogynistic fucking claptrap.

I knew the fulminators would be out in force! 🤣 Sorry, but I don’t think a leather pencil skirt looks good on anyone of whatever age. I think anyone of any age looks daft driving a sports car - but there’s a reason why it’s a middle aged male stereotype (which OP referenced first!)

Wearwhatyousee · 25/01/2025 01:06

Love my leather pencil skirt from Raey! It’s mid calf, which I personally think looks a bit more modern than anything on or above the knee. I tend to stick to a knit on top - either a slimmer merino one from Cos for a more dressed up look, or a chunky knit for daytime. I’m about 20ft tall so I never wear heels and I disagree that heels are necessary!!

TriangleLight · 25/01/2025 01:12

I love them. I’m old and think I rock mine. Buy it, I say

Go for it. I get a lot of use out of my leather skirts. Date nights, work, dressy events... some outfits of mine below.

These clothes are beautiful. I absolutely love the long tan coatigan and your bags - beautiful taste.

Tipperttruck · 25/01/2025 07:14

That skirt makes MM look like a sack of potatoes. So on that basis, I wouldn't care if it is fashionable or not. She is an amazingly beautiful woman and it still makes her look crap. It's a no from me.

Combustivechicken · 25/01/2025 07:22

If you find one that fits well (the one Meghan has on looks a poor fit and doesn’t hang smoothly) id go for it. I agree it’s a classic and if you like it and feel good in it and style it well, I think it will be something you get a lot of wear from, and will be adaptable. You can go for the classic - shirt or polo or funnel neck shirt, jumper or fluffy cardigan or jumper. I’d get some and see what you think and how you feel in them.

Who cares if it's 'dated' just wear what you want. A lot of fashion is about how you style the item!

This!

Anything goes these days...our fashion goes round and round the decades now. And who cares if it's 'current' anyway? Why limit yourself that way? To blend in? Naaaah. Make your choices your own. Truly stylish people don't care what's in or out, sheep do.

WillaDeWord · 25/01/2025 07:44

Thank you so much @JMAngel1 - what a lovely thing to say.

OP, my oxblood leather skirt is perhaps the most complimented item in my wardrobe. More importantly, when I wear it (agree it does not need to be with heels, I often wear with tan pointed slingback flats in the office) I feel amazing.

If you love it, buy it and wear it. There are always ways to make something look current and styling tips you can find online.

Think carefully about what will suit you as it is an investment piece! I am a tall, slim hourglass with long limbs. I suit properly waisted things (with an actual waistband) that hit mid-calf, so this is common to all pencil skirts I own - leather or not.

pictoosh · 25/01/2025 07:45

P.s When it comes to a leather or suede skirt I'd always go for knee length and A-line. But that's just me and what suits my shape.

Beaverbridge · 25/01/2025 07:51

Another one here who loves them. I say go for it.

SparklyNewMe · 25/01/2025 07:52

If it fits you well, flatters your figure and styled well, leather skirt will make you feel fabulous. I am petite and found The One two years ago after a decade of fails. I also thought if it’s too late but it has been a workhorse. I style it with oversize T-shirts and mules in the summer and jumpers, oversize shirts, a smart sweatshirt, or denim shirt, in cooler months.

I do have a black silk blouse too to create exact MM look but also do feel that it’s overdressed IRL, would call for a special occasion. Also when styling, I try to make it the stand out piece and keep everything else as a canvas.

A sack of potatoes????????

And you’re Audrey Hepburn, I assume?

I've ordered this one from Asda, cheap but hopefully chic, can't go wrong at £6! Recently lost weight so trying different things.

Love that!

It really does not. You may not like the skirt but it fits her slim frame very well.

Oh dear, I am shopping today as I am considering a mid length for a wedding I have at the end of March. I don’t suit dresses and thought a leather skirt with a silk blouse might (I say might) work.

Relaxaholic · 24/01/2025 18:46

Meghan Markle actually wore a Hugo Boss skirt, this is a lower price rip off, so I'd be wary of the quality, colour and cut of this one versus the one she's actually wearing.

There is the Hugo burgundy option that's reduced, and a green wrap one still available. - Bleistiftrock aus Leder mit Bahnen - Dunkelrot search.app/YAGCU3qZHsjXR6qq5

I think personally I'd be looking into a midi length also though.

Well if you’re going into shops today the shape of the skirt you choose is likely to be contemporary and fashionable, so what’s the problem?

I'd be tempted to order a cheap one off Vinted to give it a try, and then when you know what you like/dislike about it and whether you're actually going to wear it instead of leaving it languishing in your wardrobe you can narrow down your search. You can probably get a faux leather skirt for about £7 posted.

I would highly recommend looking at vintage - I just bought a St Michael suede midi skirt and it is absolutely beautiful... and has pockets!!! It was under £15 inc fees and postage.

I did find this beauty too - but sadly I'm a modern 10-12 aka a vintage 16, going by these measurements Blush

Wow! Marks & Spencer dropped the branding of St. Michael in 2000! What a vintage find!!

That’s 25 years ago. Of course it’s vintage, just like wearing my mum’s skirt from the 60s in the 80s would have been vintage. Why the sneering?

I'm sorry??? What could you have possibly found sneering about me congratulating you on a Vintage find? 🫤

AnnaMagnani · 25/01/2025 09:36

Of course it's not dated, the shops have been awash with 90s styles for ages now.

It wasn’t mine.

Apologies. I thought you were being sarcastic. My mistake.
