Are leather pencil skirts dated?

Hi all, I have a birthday coming up and would like to use my birthday money to buy a classic leather pencil skirt. I love the look of the green one Meghan Markle wore when she was still ‘in’ the working royal family. However that was quite a while ago now and I’m not sure if they are dated now. I don’t know if I would go for green or another colour. I’m 45 and want to have an up to date look. Any advice would be most welcome!

I think it’s a classic and can look fantastic. Get it if it makes you feel good. If you’re not sure, would a pair of leather trousers suit your lifestyle more?

Doublevodka · 25/01/2025 09:47

Relaxaholic I bought both off Vinted. One is from Next and a soft brown leather. The other is from New Look, which I don’t usually rate, but it’s real leather and lovely. I always get compliments when I wear it. I think if you look around you can find some lovely ones and I stand by it, they are timeless!

It wasn’t mine.

Apologies. I thought you were being sarcastic. My mistake.

No problem.

I don't believe that anything is dated if worn well, and not worn to look like a costume from any decade. Ie don't wear it with large shoulder pads, bouffant hair or high shine lipstick. Individually all those things can look great though.

I think a leather pencil skirt (especially for a size 8!) is a classic. Go for it OP

Some beautiful midi ones posted here, and I agree with the poster upthread about looking for a front split. I’m short so I think the split would be more flattering

Some encouraging posts here, too! I think I’ll order a few and see what looks good

I would probably wear ankle boots or flat brogues with them. I’m not a smart trainer person (they look weird on me) and can’t wear heels these days

I love a leather pencil skirt. But I think it would be heinous to wear one with ankle boots, especially if you’re short! It has to be high heels - like Meghan’s.

I love a leather skirt...short, knee or midi! This is my favourite. I wear it with either a cashmere jumper or loose white shirt, and ankle boots. I'm 54 and stopped caring what people thought years ago. Where whatever you feel good in x

Edited

I wear mine with DMs sometimes. So shoot me.

I’m 55 and have loads of leather skirts that are just above my knee, I personally can’t get on with midi or knee length leather skirts but I think leather pencil skirts are classic.
I wear my minis with chunky jumpers and thick tights.

Aworldofmyown · 25/01/2025 13:57

I have a faux leather mid calf length one, love it and wear it all the time.

jolies1 · 25/01/2025 15:12

How about a suede midi/pencil skirt?

Animatic · 25/01/2025 16:29

Leather pencil skirts are fabulous. Go for it of you feel good in it

Bloodycatswakingmeuponasaturday · 25/01/2025 17:50

My super stylish boss wore a leather skirt recently and looked amazing. That said she is by far the chicest woman I have ever met and would look great in anything.

stanleypops66 · 25/01/2025 17:52

I bought one last year from river island and got so many compliments.

I would love to find a suede midi draped skirt with a slit to the side front - been looking for years.

Supermodels on a catwalk can wear them. Nobody else should.

Rubbish, I have had several, and looked great in them all.

sunshinechaser · 25/01/2025 18:03

I have this Sezane one but I haven't really worn it much. I'm worried it's dated or looks a bit too 'sexy'. This thread is making me want to wear it again though!

It's fabulous, wear it.
I had a similar one, made to measure, from a little boutique in Cyprus...I wore it to death with a matching jacket.

It's not too sexy, but if you wore it with a sheer lace black blouse, it could be.😎

OOOtil2025 · 25/01/2025 18:16

If it looks good on your shape I’d say go for it - expensive to clean but worn with nice heels and a cashmere jumper I think they look very classy

Leather skirts seldom need cleaning, they are always lined.

It’s lovely

SparklingSpa · 25/01/2025 18:44

All these rules are silly, don’t overthink it, it’s just a regular skirt in a different fabric.

MsWintertowne · 25/01/2025 19:02

Which rules, @SparklingSpa?

Applesonthelawn · 25/01/2025 19:21

I'd tread cautiously but if you can pull it off, it'll be fab. On me, I think black leather looks awful - I feel like Suzi Quattro in it - it's just too harsh. But something in a colour, or maybe suede, is a lot softer somehow. I like the suede Massimo Dutti one. But I'd worry it would get a seat in it quickly.
