Okay, I've been trying NOT to post about this, but ...

... surely the nipple prominence on this website is totally ridiculous? I'm not being prudish, but would anyone feel comfortable going out like that? There are multiple examples on this site.

I was wondering about bra-wearing the other day. Why do we do it? To prevent our breasts from sagging, or hanging low, so they’re still considered sexually attractive to men? To conceal our nipples to reduce the amount of sexual harassment we’re subjected to by men? Are men the reason we wear them? If we never had to see a man again would most women just discard their bras?

All good Qs. The Female Eunuch by Germaine Greer muses some of those themes.

TessTimoney · 19/01/2025 11:05

Speaking as someone with inverted nipples, I'm green with envy 🤢 If I had these breasts I'd be flaunting them 😍

It's definitely a thing that young women are less bothered about nipples showing these days. I see it in Vinted and eBay all the time where as recently as ten years ago it was still fairly taboo.

So has something changed that most of us are unaware of? Suddenly many women are dressing in extremely revealing clothing and no-one's supposed to notice? It really is like the Emperor's new clothes.

I remember last year I saw a young woman at an attraction who was wearing the tight hotpants that many were wearing and a tight white cropped t shirt with no bra. You could see from a distance that she had her nipples pierced.

IndiraCharcoal · 19/01/2025 12:16

This is definitely something that changes with fashion. My mum (who was a teen in the late 60s) thinks full nipple show-through is absolutely fine in all contexts but low cut tops and cleavage are too much, whereas I (teen in the 90s) happily show cleavage but literally used to stick plasters over my nipples, even with a bra, because I really didn't want any show-through or peanut-smuggling. Maybe high necks and nipples are back in?

Allog · 19/01/2025 12:18

Those could have your eye out!

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 19/01/2025 13:14

@Louko I don’t find wearing a bra uncomfortable, so perhaps you haven’t found a style that suits your shape/size? However, no-one is compelled to wear a bra if they don’t want to!

PersephoneSmith · 19/01/2025 18:16

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 18/01/2025 22:30

I'm autistic with sensory problems and a deformed rib (probably caused by bra-wearing as a child) that causes the bra underbust strap to roll up on one side.

There is literally no such thing as a bra that is comfortable and supportive. If I'm lucky, I can have "not in pain from the straps" and "not in pain when I walk down the stairs" from the same bralette.

Bra shopping is an exercise in futility that usually leaves me in tears in the middle of the shop. No, Bravissimo don't help, their fitters are actually the worst offenders for putting me into something painful because they fit the underbust so tightly.

Edited

That’s awful 😕 I know what you mean about tight band though. There used to be a big thing where manufacturers say 90% of people are in the wrong size bra and you need a small back size and a bigger cup.
Cue some woman in M&S trying to get me into a 36” bra, the pain! No, I need a 40” so I can breathe!

StarlightLady · 19/01/2025 18:24

Bras evolved from the full body corset, as did the “girdle”, a word no longer used for shapewear. They were both cut off versions which created the gap between top and bottom halves. I wonder if none had been invented back in the day, what would happen if a bra had just been introduced now and how this new garment would be received.

Personally, I welcome the support of my bras most of the time. I don’t wear one in the hot weather though (remember that?) apart from when at work. If my nipples offend, so be it.

PastaBelly · 19/01/2025 18:25

MeandT · 18/01/2025 21:57

I'm with you @PastaBelly! Billy is all perky & upward looking, while Bobby is down & to the left somewhat.

But guess what? All human bodies are slightly different. And wouldn't it be nice if everyone could just go about their business without others feeling it was ok to critique them or feel superior because of their personal differences.

Yes, I think OP is being a prude and yes, I think most blokes should be neutered if they can't interact with another human being without assuming they're there for their own personal sexual gratification 🤷🏼‍♀️

I was absolutely not critiquing this woman or trying to feel superior. Believe me, my boobs (nor the rest of me for that matter) have any right to, and if you look it’s the lighting that’s mainly making the nipples look a little wonky.

and I also have no issue with people dressing however they wish and nipples poking through clothing really doesn’t offend me.

im fairly new to reading through mumsnet threads and didn’t realise how many posters really dislike any light hearted humour 👀

StarlightLady · 19/01/2025 18:38

@PastaBelly - This is not a place for humour! We’ll have none of that funny business here. This is for slagging off other people. 😀🫢

Because prominent nipples like this is very much against the societal norm and is clearly attention seeking which is fine but own it.

Being an aged male neither I nor anyone else gives a hoot about my nipples, but surely getting or not getting attention is largely what fashion is about.

ProfessionalPirate · 20/01/2025 10:21

Sneakybusiness · 17/01/2025 19:39

She clearly doesn’t need a bra as she lovely perky boobs that I can only dream off. What she DOES need is a nice warm studio and probably a good set of thermals.

They won’t stay perky for long if she doesn’t wear a bra! It’s not only large breasts that need support.

Actually a lot of evidence points to the opposite. Wearing a bra means the pectoral muscles aren’t engaged and may lead to more sagging than not wearing a bra.

For most though it’s down to genetics.

The study I think you are referring to wasn’t even published, let along peer reviewed. so I think the jury is still out on that one. Plenty of similar evidence out there to suggest bras do help to maintain the shape of the breasts, albeit the difference made will be a small one.

On a separate note, I don’t know how anyone can bear not wearing a bra day-to-day. I’m pretty small chested but even I find it so uncomfortable to not have the support!

tbf @PastaBelly I was only agreeing with you in the first paragraph. The rest was just a more general response to the whole thread?

People definitely take things too much to heart. Live & let live (wheelnuts or not) eh ;)

WildAquaBiscuit · 20/01/2025 14:01

Cant get a close up, but is that by any chance a manekin?

dollybird · 20/01/2025 16:14

I mean we can all have our opinions on where bras are comfy, not comfy, you want to wear one or not, but really it isn't hard to say that the nipples in those pictures are particularly noticable and not by accident.

I agree, and for those saying 'men have nipples', I don't think male models would be shown with deliberately erect nipples.

I misread that as "mankini" and had a mental image of a female model in Borat swimwear. The usual spelling is mannequin because we stole the word from the French.

TwinklySquid · 20/01/2025 17:01

I don’t care if it makes me a prude, but there really is no need.

The advertisers have made a deliberate choice to not put her in a bra to draw attention. They are probably very pleased there is a whole post dedicated to one of their products. It’s a tacky move.

This is an advert aimed at women. Adverts are designed to catch your eye. Advertising sells.

Using erect nipples to sell clothes is kind of low. It’s not needed and just seems crass .

Disturbia81 · 20/01/2025 17:33

I'm always torn been wanting women to wear whatever the fuck they like.
But also I hate that certain looks/styles are giving men what they want and objectifying us further.

Crazyworldmum · 20/01/2025 19:09

I admit , I’m in my early 40s and I never quite understood why women should try to hide their nipples shape ? I never noticed others nipples and assume it wasn’t an important thing . So I never even think about if nipples shape is visible when I go out ? I do not wear padded bras so I’m assuming they are at stages but handy crossed my mind to care .

spoonfulofsugar1 · 17/01/2025 21:40

She's not a prude, and no one in public wants to see your nipples poking through

I'm always amused when someone on here turns their own opinion into a universal...

"No one wants to see your nipples poking through..."

No one? I mean, what are the chances of that being true? Not a single person?

Some will not. Some might. But the huge majority will really not give a toss either way. And, actually, the more women who do it, the fewer people will care. So it'll be less and less true that 'no one wants to...'

Like ankles. Who these days says 'No one wants to see you flaunting your ankles in public..."?
