... surely the nipple prominence on this website is totally ridiculous? I'm not being prudish, but would anyone feel comfortable going out like that? There are multiple examples on this site.

I was wondering about bra-wearing the other day. Why do we do it? To prevent our breasts from sagging, or hanging low, so they’re still considered sexually attractive to men? To conceal our nipples to reduce the amount of sexual harassment we’re subjected to by men? Are men the reason we wear them? If we never had to see a man again would most women just discard their bras?

From Google.

Women wear bras primarily for support and comfort, particularly for larger breasts, as a bra can help alleviate back pain and provide structure to the chest, especially during physical activity; additionally, some women wear bras for aesthetic reasons, to enhance their appearance, or to conform to social norms, though the decision to wear a bra is ultimately a personal choice.

I personally wear a bra because I have fairly large breasts. I feel way more comfortable with a bra on when I'm out, and would never go out without one. Although having said that, I can't wait to get it off when I get home, and never wear one in the house. Considering I have fairly large breasts, they are not saggy. (I am in my late 50s.) I have always been quite fit and active though, so I think that's why they're fairly OK.

Yep I’m not sure why I put myself through the discomfort for so long. I’m older now and I only wear them when really needed.

Rosesgrowonyou · 17/01/2025 21:24

Women have nipples shocker.

VonHally · 17/01/2025 21:25

Both models look AI generated to me.

Either way the nipple prominence is deliberate, and draws the eye there (consciously or unconsciously). Not a fan of the focus on nipples rather than the product IYSWIM.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 17/01/2025 21:26

Crikey, my boobs would flap about preventing me from any energetic movement if I didn’t wear a bra. I occasionally thank my lucky stars that I was born post the invention of the bra

How many women can run for a bus comfortably without one?

Jennyathemall · 17/01/2025 21:32

She doesn’t need a bra and yes you are being a prude. The fact it makes you uncomfortable is what makes you a prude. Honestly what is wrong with it? I often go without a bra and have prominent nipples if im wearing a tight top just like that. Who cares?

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 17/01/2025 21:35

Women have nipples shocker.

Yes, and men have penises. I don't particularly want to see a graphic outline of those either. It's not prudery; it's a) aesthetics and b) societal norms.

Running with no bra on sounds painful to me and this isn’t a trend I could get on board with. I’m a size 30F and lots of clothing looks overly sexualised on my body type. I’d look like an enormous attention seeker in that.

Men arent the reason i wear a bra, any more than any other item of clothing. My boobs are large so its more comfortable to have them supported in a good bra.

Me too! Im wincing at the very thought of running without a bra

She's not a prude, and no one in public wants to see your nipples poking through

How many women can run for a bus comfortably without one?

I don’t know. I have very large breasts and they don’t cause me discomfort when running. I find bras very uncomfortable, but continue to wear one because if I didn’t, I think lots of people would find it unusual enough to think I was a mad woman, or inviting sexual attention. I feel my motivation for bra-wearing is based around men, but I’m very pleased to think that for others it is simply physical comfort. That’s just amazing to me though, as flinging off my bra when I get home is a sublime pleasure.

HangingOver · 17/01/2025 21:41

Mine look like this aaaaall the time. If I'm not wearing a thick bra they show even through jumpers. Which is stupid because my bra size is 34AA so there's really no bloody point wearing them otherwise.

Men have nipples too. While I'm not keen on showing the outline of my erect penis, I couldn't give a shit if its a bit chilly and my nipples show through my t-shirt. Why should it be different for women?

There’s your problem right there - equating penises to nipples.
Aesthetics? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Who are you to police others looks?
Societal norms? Are these written down somewhere, maybe a rule book? They evolve and loosen over time. I imagine how you look right now would shock Victorian society.

TroysMammy · 17/01/2025 21:42

I wear a padded bra which makes me look matronly as my nipples are like the cone shaped jelly sweets in dolly mixtures all year around. Same size too but not green in colour.

When I was in my 20s I used to wear unpadded bras as my boobs were smaller then. My then husband's mate on a night out would look at my boobs and say "come on lads, let's go inside it's getting cold out here". I'm very fond of the pervert as he now lives with my sister. Just as well I've never been the type to get offended.

AzurePanda · 17/01/2025 21:42

I’ve only ever worn sports bras for years which I find very comfortable. Can’t imagine going without one, so uncomfortable.

Nipples are a weird sexualised preoccupation in the UK. Where I'm from, bras are for

a) large breasts which require support for the comfort of the woman herself
b) achieving a sleek outline for special occasions
c) dressing up 'sexily' for a partner

Women don't feel compelled to wear bras day to day, irrespective of breast-size. Nobody would bat an eyelid at a woman's nipples being contoured through the fabric of her top or blouse. Not at work, in the street or at the gym.

When I arrived in the UK, this is one of the things I was struck by early on. Men -colleagues, shopkeepers, strangers in the street‐ would literally stare or comment, even though I was quite young and clearly not trying to 'parade' my boobs. I quickly learnt to comply and have worn bras ever since, in order not to cause offense. But I really hate it and definitely don't need to wear one.

Where are you from?
I’m just curious as I’ve travelled a lot and don’t think I’ve been somewhere where nipple showing is normalised.

maggieemagpie · 17/01/2025 21:47

Is she wearing one of those hideous kardashian bras?

Bananagirl23 · 17/01/2025 21:53

I’m surprised by some of the bra comments on here. I just couldn’t imagine not wearing one but I do it for support as I’m very active. I remember reading that a bra prevents sagging later in life too

That's interesting, because I'm a 34FF/G and my nipples are really small (though I've never had kids so many that's why?) - and I've noticed that large breasts do tend to = small nipples and vice versa - I wonder if this is just the natural distribution of breast tissue?

Anyway, for me bras are more comfortable out and about, but I'm more comfortable braless at home - so it's to do with the movement caused by walking.

Same here but I keep mine on at home because I am genuinely more comfortable with than without. If women's bras are really that uncomfortable maybe they don't fit properly.

no comment in response but just wondering, anyone else distracted by the unevenness?! My intrusive thoughts just wanna reach out and make them symmetrical (I’m the type that has to straighten piles of letters, fridge magnets, cups in a row though 🤣)

not distracted by something completely normal in the vast majority of women, nope.
