How much swimwear do you take on holiday with you?

I am away for 10 days in the Caribbean in March, and I am wondering how much swimwear to bring with me, and it got me thinking… I wonder how much other women typically bring with them?

Lol did it occur to you not everyone is swimming in money? Some
of us can’t throw away cash at five bikinis. Politely, I’d be nice to have five bikinis but to me, it’s not something I’d prioritize. If spending on clothes I’d rather spend on clothes I’d get wear out more frequently. So the question isn’t how much swimwear do you NEED to bring, to which the reasonable answer is one piece, but rather how much do you typically bring, I guess because the OP is worried about not keeping up with standards of Caribbean travel

Oh I'm sorry I forgot on Mumsnet you're not allowed to have nice things because someone else might not be able to afford them. Race to the bottom as always.

Yeah me and my five Primark bikinis are proper bougie, practically Musk-Esque levels of cash flow. Maybe if you're too skint to buy more than one just don't go on threads about holidays and numbers of bikinis, if it's going to upset you that some people can afford more than you?

JustLikeThatBluebird · 12/01/2025 16:44

Also, I have more active type bikinis with cycle short style legs and regular style bikini bottoms for lounging/casual swimming. I also have one pair of bottoms that's a thong but that only gets worn if we have a private pool (other women can wear whatever they like but I'd rather not flash my bum in public). So basically, it's like any clothes, you don't NEED lots of variations but it's nice to have suitable options for different activities.

SnidelyWhiplash · 12/01/2025 16:45

Politely, if you’re going to the Caribbean, money is unlikely to be an issue. This is a holiday (in my experience) where you’re in swimwear all day and you don’t want to wear the same things.

We dive, so I’ll take a few swimsuits for that and bikinis for pool and beach time.

MajorCarolDanvers · 12/01/2025 16:45

One swimdress

When I go to hot countries where there's a beach and access to a pool I pretty much live in swimwear, so for a week I'd have three/4 bikinis and a swimsuit. Then literally just few shorts and vests to go on top. Maybe one or two kaftan type dresses. I never even pack regular underwear!

Edited

Do you not wear underwear in the evenings?

That’s right, you’re not allowed to, I’m sitting here in my lowly home basically foaming at the mouth in anger thinking of someone going on a Caribbean holiday and considering bringing more than one piece of swimwear. My day is ruined. If I hadn’t gone on here I’d never have realized some people spend on things I don’t! Furious. On my way to yours with placards protesting Primark’s carbon footprint and use of sweat shop and abysmal working conditions as well as the frivolousness of flying to the other side of the world just for sunshine when kids in Sudan are surviving on grass.

You’re welcome, always a pleasure to bring a bit of perspective.

downside of public anonymous forums, what’d ya know.

ps: definitely peri-menopausal and won’t be held to account for any of the above.

For the record I spend every summer in a place where you’re in swimwear all day. Horror of all horrors, I wear the SAME bikini all day. It gets wet in the sea, I sit on the beach and it dries, I go in again and it gets wet, repeat. Shocking.
Also, buying five bikinis or 10 is obviously not a moral failing. Who knows, maybe I have 50 pairs of shoes. I don’t, but I could. I just don’t really care about swimwear.

sorry I’ll stop winding people up now.

have a lovely Caribbean holiday, OP

Sandwichgen · 12/01/2025 16:56

For that type of holiday I’d bring one high necked swimsuit with arms for the sea, because it is so easy to burn.

for the pool, 4 or 5 swimsuits with different necklines (to keep tan lines blurred) and kaftans to tone.

only get dressed in the evenings, really

the real question is , how many pairs of sunglasses??

(At least two)

Max 2

Halavonna · 12/01/2025 16:56

I used to bring three or four when I was younger and could tolerate the heat of beaches/poolsides no problem.

Nowadays I have no issue with how many to bring, because I bring NONE! My days of sunbathing are over now, (I can't tolerate high temps abroad) and I enjoy different things on hols these days. I still swim, but in my local pool in a black one piece and a swimming cap!

BobbyBiscuits · 12/01/2025 16:57

@Spanielsaremad where I go usually we don't really go out in the evenings. We stay at the house. Purely because everyone is drunk by then and you need to drive up a hill to the local town!

But if I was in a hotel and that then I would bring a few pairs of knickers! Lol

That’s up to you. We have a different type of holiday in the summer (not at an hotel) and I’ll happily take fewer bikinis etc as we can wash and dry everything and I don’t care so much what I’m wearing as it’s just us.

Our Caribbean break is at a posh hotel. Women tend to wear different swimwear and cover ups every day. It doesn’t matter. It’s just the way it is.

TiredEyesToday · 12/01/2025 17:02

These days probably 2 swimsuits for 7 days away. When I was a gorgeous young thing and lived in bikinis…. Half a dozen? Skimpier the better!

Yea it’s the way it is and of course you can choose to live in a world where you don’t question the rampant excessive consumption which is about to destroy the world for future generations.

unsync · 12/01/2025 17:06

One cossie, 2 mix and match bikinis, long & short sleeved rash vest and rash leggings. I dive though so always in the water. My kit is functional rather than fashionable.

PiggyPigalle · 12/01/2025 17:07

None. In case I appear on the front of The Daily Mail in an article about ...........
" Britain's Obesity Crisis."

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 12/01/2025 17:12

4 or 5, with co ordinating coverup/ kaftans and sarongs. They don’t take up much weight or space, most of them are chiffon! (The coverups not the bikinis.
I go on at least 3 hot holidays a year and I wear them until they wear out. I tell my colleague off for buying new ones from Shein for every holiday- that’s consumerism!
To me it would be similar to wearing the same (clean) outfit every day. Just boring.

Newmeagain · 12/01/2025 17:13

2 plus a rash vest. I like to travel light.

I thank the Lord I don’t. It would spoil my enjoyment of my cocktails. Cheers! 🍸

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 12/01/2025 17:13

Also I probably go through 3 a day. One is still damp from the day before. One is clean to wear for hotel breakfast. That gets changed usually at lunchtime as I don’t want to sit in a damp and sandy cossie for lunch.

Same. I have a cover up or kaftan for each day. Some of them must be 10 years old and from good old M&S or John Lewis.

itsstillmehere · 12/01/2025 17:18

But what about the " breakfast dresses" ? 😂

ScarletWitchM · 12/01/2025 17:20

1 bikini, 1 swimsuit, 1 spare of either
