How much swimwear do you take on holiday with you?

I am away for 10 days in the Caribbean in March, and I am wondering how much swimwear to bring with me, and it got me thinking… I wonder how much other women typically bring with them?

2 bikinis, one to wash and one to wear plus a one piece for boat trips if I feel like covering my stomach.

Lobstercrisps · 12/01/2025 17:32

I've never been up long enough on holiday to need a dry bikini after lunch!

Usually it's breakfast around 9.30, lounge/coffee for an hour or two. Lunch. Then sunbathe and swim.

I take roughly three, mainly as that's all I own.

Am looking for a new swimsuit. I really want a J Crew one but can't justify the $$$ but the M&S ones all have bloody 'tummy control'. Suggestions welcome!

BondStreet · 12/01/2025 17:33

For 10 days I’d take 5 sets and wash out the worn sets.

gingercat02 · 12/01/2025 17:45

2 bikinis one on, one rinsed and drying
Might take a tankini or swim suit if we were planning on a water park

I have ordered some from Bravissimo, Aspiga and Boden. They have yet to arrive. I’ve had Boden bikinis before and liked them, but I have yet to try the other makes.

My best swim suit by a mile is by Eres. It was really expensive, but I’ve had it for 5 years and it’s like new and so flattering.

Lobstercrisps · 12/01/2025 17:53

@SnidelyWhiplash thank you!! Will google ERES.

My last proper swimsuit was from J Crew in 2014 and if it wasn't almost falling apart I'd carry on wearing it I love it so much.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 12/01/2025 17:53

I get all my swimwear from Fantasie. I need the cup sized ones at 36FF.

Lobstercrisps · 12/01/2025 17:57

@HalfasleepChrisintheMorning thanks ill check it out.

Sorry for detailing the thread OP!

Lol did it occur to you not everyone is swimming in money? Some
of us can’t throw away cash at five bikinis. Politely, I’d be nice to have five bikinis but to me, it’s not something I’d prioritize. If spending on clothes I’d rather spend on clothes I’d get wear out more frequently. So the question isn’t how much swimwear do you NEED to bring, to which the reasonable answer is one piece, but rather how much do you typically bring, I guess because the OP is worried about not keeping up with standards of Caribbean travel

lol, it’s actually not about “keeping up with the standards of Caribbean travel,” it was also out of the interests of practicality as well.

This is my wedding & honeymoon - it is also the first time I have been to the Caribbean.

I do think multiple makes sense. One is simply not enough, also you don’t have to fork out loads for swimwear. Some supermarket brands are pretty good these days.

I agree op my favourite bikini was £10 for the set from Tesco.

The bottoms are special hold the tummy in place ones and have a good bottom coverage and the top is in bra sizes and again keeps everything where it should be.

Once was on a beach in Cornwall and lady commented on it saying it looked very high end. And I did that very British thing of apologising that it was just from Tescos 😂😂

Congratulations and hope all goes well with he wedding and honeymoon 🥂

achangeofusername · 12/01/2025 18:54

2 tops, 3 bottoms

FortyFacedFuckers · 12/01/2025 19:13

I take 5

Love that!

I would also be equally as British in my response, ahahaha 😄

Thank you so much, I can’t wait. Might have to check out my local Tesco!

@Alwaystired23 "I went abroad for 7 days last year and took 3 swimsuits. I take travel hand wash with me, so I tend to wash out all our swimwear every evening"

Eek-is this what people do?😳😳

Not me! They go on the line wet from the sea. When they are dry they come in. When l get back home they go in machine on a delicates wash.

ln the longer term detergent ruins elastane, so l don’t think it’s good to use it every day.

redshoes2017 · 12/01/2025 20:10

I always take a bikini for each day I'm away. To me , and this is just how I feel personally , I would feel like I was reusing underwear if I put the same bikini on 🤢 I like to have a clean fresh pair of bottoms on each day.

Last year was the first time I did it. I guess it doesn't really need to be done 🤷‍♀️. I don't know. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Good job I took the travel wash, as dh didn't take enough underwear so he ended up doing a load of Boxers, socks etc 🙄 I always over pack for myself and dc.

DecafDodger · 12/01/2025 20:17

I've always just used hotel shampoo or shower gel to handwash items

WhereAreWeNow · 12/01/2025 20:55

I'd probably take 3 and wash out with shower gel each evening.

Nope. They’re in chlorine and/or salt all day, that’ll get them cleaner than washing!

lycra/swimsuit fabric is delicate and washing frequently will shorten the life considerably. Dd is a swimmer and you can tell the kids who have their costumes washed, they go very baggy and faded very quickly.

i give them a rinse in fresh water every so often to get rid of the chlorine/salt rather than to “clean” them- makes them last longer.

Onetimeonly2024 · 12/01/2025 21:35

I’d take 5 with matching cover ups. Like a pp some of the cover ups I have had for 20 years. They were pricey but I still love them. We always stay somewhere with a washing machine or laundry option so I just wash them or get them washed.
Monsoon have a couple of nice kaftans at the minute. Hope you have a fabulous time 🥰🥰

Ahem I dont ger Why anyone would ever need more than one bikini or swimsuit? I always only bring one and never had any problems. I wear it, take it off and let it dry and put it on later again. When I’m in a very warm palace the sun dried it quickly while I’m wearing it, and if in colder climates I don’t tend to hang around for ages in swimwear, I swim, sit a bit in the sun and get dressed and that’s it

Because some days I might be more active so want a one piece or full two piece. Other days I might want a skimpier 2 piece

Also I find they don't quite dry and I don't like putting on a damp suit. It just feels yucky.

I generally coke in around 3pm. Shower and wash suit and hang in sun but the sun goes down before they are dry and then they stay damp

StarlightLady · 12/01/2025 16:33

2 bikini bottoms, one top. Rarely wear the top.

Where do you holiday?

changecandles · 12/01/2025 21:47

@leftorrightnow

Yea it’s the way it is and of course you can choose to live in a world where you don’t question the rampant excessive consumption which is about to destroy the world for future generations.
Of course we all now understand you wear one set of clothing and rinse it out every night. Or are you extravagant and have two sets that you rotate to allow them to dry. 2 pairs of knickers are all you need right? And he pair of shoes.

Because of course unless you do this you would be super hypocritical to suggest people should wear one bikini everyday when that is their main outfit of the day
