It’s so disappointing!

I spotted a cropped suit jacket at M&S that I thought would really suit me as I am short. Really wanted the matching trousers and there were no sizes online or near me so I made a long trip to track them down. Visualised myself wearing the suit to work and looking really cold and professional.

Alas - there is just too much fabric in the wrong places in the trousers. I tried them on about a gazillion times, trying to convince myself that they looked good - but I had a to accept that I looked like Charlie Chaplin. I am just glad that I did admit defeat because in the past I have bought things against my own better judgment. (I did keep the jacket - I think it will look good with other things.)

Here are the trousers in case anyone is interested:

Lace and florals age me 50 years.

understated, chic and sophisticated neutral make me look like a corpse.

i don’t have the legs for skinny jeans. I know the skinny jean wearing rock chick is out, but I love it!

Twixtmasjigsaw · 11/01/2025 17:50

Cropped jackets are a universal fail for me. Have huge norks and a d anything cropped around the upper half makes me look like a hippo.

On the other hand, I completely rock a pair of biker boots with a mini....

Grasmereginger · 11/01/2025 17:55

I'm so waiting for Suzi Quattro fat ban comment. From my side, I have loads of "dangly" earrings that just do not suit me. I cannot wear a jumpsuit for love nor money and the baggy jeans on me look hideous

Grasmereginger · 11/01/2025 17:56

@ThePolarBearWhoLostHisCrown sorry you got in first about the classic thread 🤣

My issues have been more with hair than clothing. The worst was the pixie crop in the late 90s. I have frizzy hair and my features are not delicate and gamine. I expected Winona Ryder but got Helen Shapiro on a bad day.

Ooh yes - I was more Victoria Wood (RIP) due to my blond always falling forward hair!

Tracystubbs · 11/01/2025 18:13

My ds is planning on getting married soon

To save panic over my outfit closer to the time,I hit vinted (I only buy second hand for my budget and the planet)

I found the most perfect, pale pink, wrap dress that I thought would look the tits with my pearl earrings and cream shoes

I had the image of looking like the perfect mother of the groom-smart,stylish and chic

I was going to knock the stuffing out of my narc family-they could say what they liked about me and it would go over my head as I just knew I'd look stunning

I tried it on when it arrived

An overweight hippo in a tutu stared back at me in the mirror....

I’m going to be a 51 year old bridesmaid this year.

I have a feeling it might end badly…

mummysontheginalready · 11/01/2025 19:02

at 51 LunaNorth would you not be a matron of honour? very sophisticated and you get to boss the bridesmaids about!

Zebracat · 11/01/2025 19:29

Someone please tell me how to wear shirts. I love that straight jeans white shirt look. Harry Hill with melons down my front.

I’m not sure I like ‘matron’. My bust isn’t big enough to carry that title off 😂

Grin I'm tall with short hair and glasses. Every fashion magazine I've ever read seems to think you can't go wrong with a "perfect crisp white shirt". Hoo yes you can. When I was young, awkward teenage boy. Now I'm 50-something, it's more awkward Maitre D.

My friend, who is effortlessly stylish, had a fur jacket that she would throw over all sorts of outfits and look wonderful. I ordered one in a beautiful frosted grey colour only to find I looked like a silverback gorilla

Is anyone else old enough in MN years to remember the thread where somebody bought a leather jacket and said she looked like Suzi Quattro's fat nan? 😂

Your description made me laugh, a silverback gorilla, brilliant. Yes, I remember the original thread and Suzi Quatro's fat Nan. It's the only thread that's made me really laugh, there were a few outstanding posts.

Oh me too. I've tried this look as well. Crisp, fitted white shirt and black straight jeans - at least it shows that i have some shape. Unfortunately it makes me rock the 'would you like your table cleared now and the dessert menu?' look.

DerekFaker · 12/01/2025 09:45

I just don't suit anything 'tucked in' as I have a short body. It's such a smart look too 😪

I don't really either. It works if it's loosely hanging out at the edges , but then it's not really smart 😅😂.

Cropped does kind of work.

I got one of those large collar blouses hoping to look all feminine and romantic but, in the words of Boris Johnson: alas! I just put it on and couldn't stop laughing at myself. I can't pinpoint why it's so wrong on me, but it is! 😭 I nearly posted a pic on here for comedy value, in fact I may do that one day.

Edit: I also can't work with this nappy cut of trousers and shorts, it's a very difficult look to work with, imo.

Edited

My husband called me a Pilgrim when I tried those collars.

godmum56 · 19/01/2025 09:27

The wide leg trousers that are supposed to look sooooo flattering on larger ladies. I look like thr south end of an elephant going north. Happily I am wedded to my long tops and skinny jeans so “fashion” can go and do one

Thistlewoman · 19/01/2025 09:27

LunaNorth · 10/01/2025 16:40

I had my hair done for a wedding a few years ago. I asked for boho waves and a loose updo. I looked like this:

I have just terrified DP laughing so hard at this he thought I was having an asthma attack. @LunaNorth I'm sure you looked lovely though...

BlodynYGog · 19/01/2025 09:49

I have a penchant for biker boots & vintage look lace shirts. Together I look like Captain Jack Sparrow.

KatharinaRosalie · 19/01/2025 10:25

I'd love to dress cute and girly and feminine. But even when slim, I'm muscular with strong facial features. I keep forgetting that and trying cutesy romatic lace and tulle airy-fairy items. I look like a man heading to a crossdressing party. And not in a glamouros dragqueen way, but your uncle wearing your aunt's clothes way.

pomers · 19/01/2025 18:29

Cream Burberry type macs. I’m tall, slim ish with very long legs. What could go wrong? I’ve tried but I always end up looking like a removal man in an overall. Very disappointing

amoreoamicizia · 20/01/2025 08:33

I saw a Mum looking very glam in her green longline puffer/leggings/trainer combo in the supermarket yesterday. Why? If I wore that I'd look like I'd given up on life 😩

Does this just boil down to looks? But there's something more, isn't there, that's giving some people a polished/chic look even in a puffer jacket whereas others (like me) look like we've abandoned all fashion hope.

SchnitzelvonKrummWithAVeryLowTum · 20/01/2025 13:57

Went shopping with my mum to find her an outfit for a wedding. We saw a really lovely green linen suit in the window of East. Look no further she declared! However, on trying it on I could hear hysterical laughter coming from the changing room, she looked like a mixture of Worzel Gummidge and Sandi Toksvig. We still laugh about that suit! 😂

That’s such a letdown, but it’s awesome that you trusted your instincts! Sometimes it’s tough to walk away from something we picture ourselves in, but now you’ve got a jacket that’ll work with so many other outfits. It’s a great reminder for all of us to focus on what flatters us. You made a smart choice!
