Looking older than my age

stargir · 31/12/2024 11:41

Age 53 with nasolabial folds and dryish skin. I have never really worn much make up and have been using a tiny amount of Bourgois gel foundation to even out my skin tone along with Olay retinol 24 night cream and Olay regenerist day cream. I have tried all sorts of moisturisers and foundations but I am feeling really low with how old I look and wondered if anyone could recommend some sort of tinted moisturiser or other product that could give me a bit of glow, I was on the point of ordering some trinny London BFF de-stress cream but that has mixed reviews and I can’t afford to waste money. I hate thick make up and would never consider fillers or Botox as I have a fear of needles and don’t have tons of money to spend on beauty. I do wonder if years of running have caused the sagging of my skin so know I mainly do cycling and gym classes. Any suggestions?

I've looked into tretinoin - unfortunately cannot believe for a second that my GP would entertain an appointment to give me a prescription for that seeing as I can barely get an appt to talk about more serious health concerns. How on earth do you all get it on prescription or are you all going private?

sunshinechaser · 17/01/2025 16:53

@imjusthereforAIBU -loads of us have said on the thread that we get it from Dermatica. Other companies include Skin and Me.

suki1964 · 17/01/2025 17:38

You know we are all far too critical about ourselves when we are sat nose up to a magnifying mirror

I bet a pound to a penny you don't look as old as you think you do

Treat the dry skin. I had never heard of tret until I joined here , and more I read about it, the more Im so not tempted so I stick with Hyaluronic acid and peptides . Im not trying to turn back the clock, just trying to keep my skin from peeling/getting sore/ flaking etc so I can get a wee bit of make up on and look pretty bloody good

I have to agree with a PP, you need a base with luminosity for that bit of glow. Boots No7 is a good starting point - they give great samples for you to try for a week or two. But nothing is going to look good on visibly dry skin

Healthy diet, water, try to avoid extreme changes in temperature ( I never have the heaters on in the car for example, I use the heated seat ) and you know any moisturiser that sinks in is fine . Ive actually settled on an Avon one, my skin doesn't react, it absorbs easily and leaves my face soft and smooth . I exfoliate as and when , usually with a muslin cloth

OP- don’t waste money on expensive moisturiser. They all have the same basic ingredients. As said in here before Aldi sell one of the best. E45, Nivea, Cerave - excellent. There are many others too. I use Dermatica too for tret. I, like others am not happy to pay other firms via transfer, or send money to pharmacies in Spain. If you have someone who regularly goes to Spain who can get it for you -fine!
another tip- try Cerave hydra cleanser, really kind to ageing skin! (I should know!)

Sonant · 17/01/2025 04:19

No makeup.

I use tretoin.

Not like any 52 I know, that’s for sure!

Sorry to jump in op but re dermatica, in finding it very opaque as to what you get for your budget .it wants me to sign up before telling me what I'm ordering.

I’ve found their service fine and they are very easy to contact for advice, and flexible if you want to adjust your prescription eg receive it every two months instead of monthly.

Is that real? Odd picture. Duck pouting clearly not just for the gen z's if it is !

Did that make you feel good?

Actually no it didn't but I've had a fair few people 'like' my observation and someone else made an even more 'surprised' comment below mine so I'm not alone clearly. It's just a peculiar thing to do on an anonymous forum, I've been on here for 22 years and rarely if ever do posters randomly post pouting selfies of themselves to millions of people on Mnet. Instagram presumably but not on here.

It didn’t warrant such a bitchy response.

Possibly not, sorry, it's the pouting... Gives me the rage

Don’t worry I agree. I felt the response was the appropriate amount of shock & horror rather than bitchy 🤣

Thank you, I don't consider myself butchy (or bitchy) if I'm honest , it just took me by surprise 🫢

Phase2 · 17/01/2025 19:32

People post selfies on style and beauty, let's not be mean it's a nice section of the forum.
So dermatica - is it just a tube of whatever prescription and you use your own cleanser etc ?

Kickingasssince72 · 17/01/2025 19:50

Just wanted to add I've been using tret for a month from dermatica and I'm so impressed with the difference to skin tone and fine lines. I've need to use tonnes of moisturiser too, but can't believe the change.

TheGander · 17/01/2025 20:00

Anything worthwhile you can get OTC in France ( that you couldn’t get here) ? I’m heading there in a few weeks.

Whoyoutakingto · 17/01/2025 20:03

I use face wipes by Johnson to take off makeup. Olay primer £5 under L’Oréal foundation. Don’t want to sound vain but I get compliments and I am 60. But also I don’t drink alcohol and don’t eat meat and have never smoked or vaped and can’t afford sun holidays 🤣🤣🤣🤣. When asked I say that I have had an easy life single parent 4 kids 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

doublec · 17/01/2025 20:19

Am a few years younger than @Sonant and very much had great skin like her until cancer/chemo fucked it up. Tret is a wonderful thing. I used it too but stopped when I was having treatment. I hope to restart in the next month or so.

Also, and like Sonant, I have good genes and great bone structure. We even have the same colour hair and fondness for pouting 😂

doublec · 17/01/2025 20:22

OP, running hasn't caused your face to sag. People tend to fall into two camps - saggers and hollowers. This is down to genetics, weight and facial structures, not what exercise they do/don't do!

Oh dear. Is that just a bad photograph? You do look over 60.

Woke up on the wrong side of the bed?

Possibly! 😁

Was looking for tips on people looking young & vibrant, but was confronted by a pouting selfie of an older looking woman. I felt it didn't add to the discussion, but perhaps a bit unkind to the poster.

I thought she had beautiful skin for an older woman. Not everyone wants to look 20 when they’re 50 - thank god.

Lentilweaver · 18/01/2025 09:28

I think @Sonant looks great for any age.

I have good skin thanks to Tret and genes, but I do have sagging. No remedy for that except fillers, so I will live with it.

Brokeinto · 18/01/2025 09:46

It's the pouting, selfie, vanity element I didn't much like ...

Theseventhmagpie · 18/01/2025 09:58

TheTruthHurtsDontIt · 17/01/2025 13:53

This is a super weird thing to do, the OP didn't ask for people to post selfies of them also looking older than they are and pouting like a 19 year old on Instagram.

Agreed. Also, not sure if she’s expecting a lot of compliments but may be disappointed….
