I want to be a glossy 4x4 mum

glossystyle · 27/12/2024 20:48

I’ve got major envy for those glossy mums who always look effortlessly put-together, the ones who pull up in a gleaming 4x4, wearing an immaculate coat, perfect jeans, and trainers that somehow look fresh and stylish instead of like they’ve been through a muddy football field. Their hair always seems bouncy, their nails are pristine, and they make juggling kids and life look so chic. I know the reality underneath will be different to this perceived polish but I fantasise about gliding around like a glossy mum.

I’m determined to give my wardrobe and look a bit of an upgrade, but I can’t afford to throw money around. I’m obsessed with Vinted, and I’d love some advice on what kind of brands or key pieces I should be looking for to recreate this vibe. Think understated luxury, nothing that screams flashy, just timeless, polished style. I am 42 and would love to dress youthfully but established.

I also feel like there’s some secret to their beauty routines, always glowing skin, neat nails, and perfectly styled hair that looks natural but clearly isn’t. Is this the magic of a Dyson Airwrap and Charlotte Tilbury, or am I missing something?

Basically, how do I create this effortless gloss without bankrupting myself? And is there anyone else out there reinventing themselves via Vinted too? Would love any tips, tricks, or recommendations to help me nail the look! Thank youuuu.

If you wore a fedora in South London you’d be called Freddie Kruger

If you wore one round here, people would be laughing behind your back.

TwinklyKhakiPoster · 29/12/2024 19:55

Short coiffured hair that you can do yourself, nails short and painted so varnish doesn't chip. You don't need a 4x4 or even a car as long as you turn up like this and are definitely a size 8 with perfume that everyone can smell as you shimmy past.
But most of all a smile and hello to everyone and they won't give a shit what you wearing as you will be the breath of fresh air in the morning that everyone loves xx

That’s what I mean! Freddie Kruger. John Wayne. “Her in the hat”.Endless piss taking.

@Scarfitwere we established that OP and I have very different definitions of glossy 4x4 ladies - I thought she meant Essex/wag types, she clarified she means more Old Money/Sloane Ranger/Kate Middleton.
I wouldn’t bother RTFT, it’s just people arguing that being rich and thin are or aren’t the only things that matter if you want to be ‘glossy’

I don’t want to be a glossy 4x4 mum, I can’t believe the shallowness of this post & 99% of the replies I have read! Unbelievable!!! Look after your children, work hard for your OWN money & show yourself some self respect!

Surely you can do all those things and still want to look good.

I hate this idea that if a woman makes an effort with her appearance it means she has no other redeeming qualities, or must be somehow neglecting her children.

What a load of shit!

What a fucking depressing world we live in where it is assumed that because a woman looks well groomed she doesn’t work, look after her children or have self respect.

what misogynistic crap.

Cleo Lacey is not the look I'm aspiring too. Think more of a blend of Kate Middleton and Rosie Huntington-Whitely. Are there any non celebrity influencers who are nailing this look I can research?

That sounds like Prince William’s birthday and Christmases come up once

You are projecting. Your comment says more about you that what has been inputted on this thread. I work very hard, have two young children who have an incredible life, but because I am interested in elevating my wardrobe and look I'm called shallow. Why are you trying to drag people down? It's odd behaviour. Aspiration drives people forward whether that be in the type of books you want to read, the holidays you go on, the clothes you wear, the theatre performances you dream of watching. The fitness routine. The children's sports and achievements. Having varied aspirations isn't shallow, it's progress. What a wolly!

I love how quickly some of the replies became batshit misogyny, well done @glossystyle for keeping a sense of humour despite the snidey comments. What always amuses me is the wilful misinterpretation of anything related to the school run, assuming women dress specifically for these 15 minutes of their day rather than understanding it’s simply an interesting daily snap shot of different outfits and styles.

OP you’re in my neck of the woods and I know the look you mean. Definitely not overdone or WAG style, plenty of former city lawyers now hybrid working post-COVID alongside the glossy SAHM set in the prep school car lines.

Tinymrscollings · 29/12/2024 21:31

I’m not much into the shiny mum look, but I can completely see the attraction. Really put together, calm and relaxed. It’s not really attainable for me - I have some disposable income but I also have to earn that money, which takes up most of my day and doesn’t leave a lot of time for facials and Pilates (one day..). I am, however, very interested in clothes and style and how I present myself is really important to me. Before I leave to pick up my children I spend 10 minutes putting myself together so I look and feel like a woman who is on top of matters.

I have absolutely no time for the notion that a woman who takes care of her appearance and is interested in how she presents herself is automatically vapid and boring. It’s no more or less true than saying someone who turns up to the school gate looking like a hedgewitch must have a deep inner life and many interesting bon mots to impart.

OP, the full look you’re after is probably not attainable unless you have the money and will to make it a full time occupation. But there is loads you can do to up your game without gunning for the full shiny look. I think a bit of attention to detail will get you 90% of the way there. I’d go for:

A couple of really great luxurious looking coats (Vinted, but be really picky about materials and know which shapes suit your style) will make any outfit look way more chic. There are many very sleek, expensive looking mums on my school run. I know because she is my friend that one of our glamorous G-Wagon women buys most of her day to day stuff from H&M, but her coats are Max Mara (love), and Moncler (not for me).

Dissolve your face with some decent active skincare

Make sure your clothes are well cared for. No hairy coats or bobbles. Clean your trainers.

Put some jewellery on and learn how to put a light but effective face of makeup on top of your looked-after skin.

Wash and dry your hair and put a hat on if you haven’t (I have a wool baseball cap I’m very into at the moment, and a bright cashmere beanie).

Clean your shoes, choose your accessories to fit what you’re wearing.

A lot of it is just a bit of thought and care when buying and again when putting on.

It’s not shallow to care about how you present yourself and it makes me livid every time that’s suggested.

Thank you! I've love reading all the replies. This is a very light hearted look at elevating my style to a look that interests me. The projection of some of the posters is sad. Pure misogyny.

I've realised that there are some posters who hang around on the S&B board, not to get tips or share ideas, but mainly to berate the rest of us about how shallow we all are for caring about this stuff.

They seem to gloat smugly about how all they do is wash their face with washing up liquid or lard or something, which somehow makes them more virtuous people than the rest of us. Weird.

Absolutely this. It is possible to be interested in how you look whilst also being a decent, interesting person.

I am really interested in my own style, I enjoy researching looks, hunting down the right pieces and trying new things. I’ve lost loads of weight so have had to rebuild my entire wardrobe and start from scratch which has been fun.

Whilst I don’t claim to have the glossy look nailed, definitely having a really good coat makes a huge difference to your whole outfit. The length is important, it should always be longer than the hemline of any skirt or dress.

Only on Mumsnet do I hear people taking about “old money”, implying it’s far superior to trashy, flashy “new money” - plebs, know your place. I love much of Mumsnet but find this (with the obligatory references to beat up old cars and ancient clothes in “classic” styles and “good quality, natural fabrics”) absolutely toe curling. No risk of kidding self the class system is dying here. I suppose it’s good not to live in ignorance.

Ah, the irony of dismissing other people’s tastes while claiming moral high ground over perceived classism. People are free to appreciate quality and longevity in their choices, it’s not a manifesto on the class system, just personal preference. If someone prefers a cashmere coat over a logo emblazoned puffa, that doesn’t make them a relic of feudalism; it simply means they value different things. Perhaps the real "toe-curling" issue here is the need to turn style preferences into a sociopolitical battleground. Preferences aren’t policies, relax.

OP posts:
Tinymrscollings · 29/12/2024 22:16

I’d take either. The new kind works just as well for a MaxMara overcoat for the winter and a Marfa Stance reversible quilted with an added aviator collar when it warms up a bit 😁

SemperIdem · 29/12/2024 22:19

@Henrythehappypig not a conversation for this thread but the class system is not only alive and well, but going with something of a renaissance at present, judging by the stats on the stagnation of social mobility.

Me too. If it fits the vibe I'm wanting to achieve I have no moral high ground on what the 'correct' item may be. I will however draw the line at acrylic knitwear. 🤣

It’s interesting that when a woman is well dressed and makes an effort with her appearance (some) other women are derogatory about it, suggesting that she’s shallow, she must not spend time looking after her kids, she must have a rich husband and no job, whilst questioning her priorities.

Would you say the same about a smartly dressed man with a nice car?

I don’t recall any mention in your particular posts that fall into this category. Your description above doesn’t fall into this category either. The “old money” comments tend to sneer at the notion of glossy 4x4s.

Bridget05 · 29/12/2024 22:49

Oh bless you, I've often felt that way. Tired of my tarty....or for that matter tatty jeans and baggy jumpers.
With a small budget look for basic qualit items and then accessorize the hell out of them
In your 40s less is more. A great illuminator rather than caked on foundation, soft blushers, light eyeshadow and use your mascara.
My personal favorite is unvarnished gorgeous shaped nails....damn classy.
Just my personal choice but it's easy on the budget. Ps. Elf products are great and not pricey

Henrythehappypig · 29/12/2024 22:52

My glossiest 4x4 friend is the most intelligent, driven person I know. She has shiny bouncy hair, has shifted (though much hard work) from one high level career to another and has three teenage children that she has been very much a hands-on parent to. She’s always been the breadwinner in her household. If you were to look at her smart and glossy appearance and think it indicates someone who is in control of her life then you’d be making the correct assumption.
