I want to be a glossy 4x4 mum

glossystyle · 27/12/2024 20:48

I’ve got major envy for those glossy mums who always look effortlessly put-together, the ones who pull up in a gleaming 4x4, wearing an immaculate coat, perfect jeans, and trainers that somehow look fresh and stylish instead of like they’ve been through a muddy football field. Their hair always seems bouncy, their nails are pristine, and they make juggling kids and life look so chic. I know the reality underneath will be different to this perceived polish but I fantasise about gliding around like a glossy mum.

I’m determined to give my wardrobe and look a bit of an upgrade, but I can’t afford to throw money around. I’m obsessed with Vinted, and I’d love some advice on what kind of brands or key pieces I should be looking for to recreate this vibe. Think understated luxury, nothing that screams flashy, just timeless, polished style. I am 42 and would love to dress youthfully but established.

I also feel like there’s some secret to their beauty routines, always glowing skin, neat nails, and perfectly styled hair that looks natural but clearly isn’t. Is this the magic of a Dyson Airwrap and Charlotte Tilbury, or am I missing something?

Basically, how do I create this effortless gloss without bankrupting myself? And is there anyone else out there reinventing themselves via Vinted too? Would love any tips, tricks, or recommendations to help me nail the look! Thank youuuu.

For FEDORAS?!

dying with laughter

What's wrong with a fedora? Hats look very stylish and are chic. I often wear one when we go to the races (horses) and a lot of others do too.

Strikeoutnow · 29/12/2024 09:19

I suppose they aren’t really school run attire, well not in my part of London.

Money. I’m afraid that’s what you need to look so glossy and bouncy.

Yup. I came on to say that I know several of these mums, and what makes the difference between them and mere mortals like myself is money. Serious, serious amounts of money - think 2x high six figure incomes.

They always look gorgeous in a way that appears low-maintenance but absolutely isn’t.

stardust777 · 29/12/2024 09:57

I'm not a mum but I imagine on the school run your coat and shoes do the heavy lifting. Investing in these pieces might be worthwhile.

I had a mini-makeover a few years ago. The things that made the most difference were: a trip to the hairdressers; professional eyebrow shaping; and teeth whitening.

Surely the main thing is that is looks “rich” and this underpins why it’s aspirational.

The races and the school run are pretty different occasions.

SemperIdem · 29/12/2024 11:40

Fedora’s always feel a bit fancy dress to me but I can appreciate they can look great on others.

Cattery · 29/12/2024 12:06

Some small gold hoops. Timeless and classic x

Edited

Well I wouldn't have worn a Fedora on a school run or probably any hat but the idea of wearing one anywhere seemed to be amusing to some posters.

There was a Mum at my DC school ( years ago ) I always thought of her as a "Glossy Mum" or whatever the phrase would've been back then.

She would've been maybe mid 30s
Blonde but not over styled , more a twisted up chignon
££ clothes ( I couldn't tell you where they;re from but I recognise handbags brands and Levi or 7FAM
She was always tanned (probably went on holiday every 6 weeks in the mental image lifestyle I built up for her )
She was tiny and thin. Probably 5'3" and size 8 .
Didn't drive a 4x4 ( she did have a snazzy car with personilised plates )

Possibly now she might look different due to the tanning I haven't seen her in years . But she always looked good in a way I could never hope to emulate .

If you wore a fedora in South London you’d be called Freddie Kruger

It is also time. I had my nails and hair done last week and it took bloody hours!
Getting your car valeted takes time.
Skin work also takes time.
You have to want to prioritize it.

Yes exactly this and I was lucky in that I was a SAHM and we had help, but money doesn't equal style there are plenty of women who have money and don't dress well the women on Cheshire Wives for example and I've known numerous women who have spent a fortune and still look less than 'glossy'.

Look for Russell and Bromley and Kurt Geiger for boots and loafers on vinted.
id suggest a trip to selfridges or John Lewis try on all the designer brands so you know your sizes before buying in vinted as it save you money reselling
also tk maxx. Buy a good versatile handbag.
perhaps holiday in Turkey and buy some high end fakes. My Chanel was £200 real leather and even my friends who own the real ones struggled to see any difference,
and for anyone complaining I’m not taking money sway from Chanel as I’d never be able to afford a £4k handbag

Classic always looks the best and scarves, lots of scarves!

I have some nice scarves (not brands but pretty colours ) that I bought to wear with plain jumpers but I never got round to .
And there was a thread on S&B about "indoor scarves" and it wasn't complimentary .

I always admire when someone wears a thin scarf that picks up the colour of their top, so that can be on my list .

Is there a Princessing Thread yet I wonder ....wanders off to look

I had my DDs at 41 & 42 and feel duty bound to make an effort so they don’t feel that they have a grandma for a DM. I don’t buy many clothes but I do buy really good quality ones in classical styles. Gumtree, EBay and Shpock are great. I invest in really decent accessories. So good quality belts and sunglasses, silk scarves, decent boots - they lift any outfit. I used to have a weekly blow dry but I got bored of the time spent and bought a Babylis Wave Secret (on Gumtree) https://www.lookfantastic.ie/p/babyliss-wave-secret-air-hair-waver/13964323/?affil=thggpsad&switchcurrency=EUR&shippingcountry=IE&thgppccampaign=21154746628&adtype=pla&productid=13964323&gclsrc=aw.ds&gadsource=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD-fXipOMyUgYW239n1HjuxAsnP2N&gclid=CjwKCAiAg8S7BhATEiwAO2-R6lycOw29HDdpLznvz03PHWUYPtdFp8XDXjWPjk27MNJvb3AzrXSrBhoCKwAQAvDBwE it makes my hair lovely and wavy & I can do it in fifteen minutes - I have an awful lot of hair! I always wear make up. I have my whole routine down to fifteen minutes - and I do use Charlotte Tilbury powder 😂 I do have a 4x4 but that’s because we have a little caravan. I’m told by people that I always look very put together…but where I live that’s just wearing lipstick 😂

ThePoliteLion · 29/12/2024 19:44

Buy Me & Em and Sezane on Vinted.
Go to a good hair dressing salon.
Minimal, dewy make up
As others have said, a well cut wool coat.
Chic (not long) nails.
One or two pieces of jewellery.

usernother · 29/12/2024 19:51

Loads of answers similar to what I think. Don't have obvious Botox or obviously dyed hair. Subtle make up and nails. Blow dry obvs. Be slim or skinny. Good quality, clean, ironed clothes. Not looking like you've tried too hard. Both the examples of instagram people I spotted are wrong imo (Chloe and Melissa). I think Kate Middleton is a good example.

Neutral toned plain tops (shirts, tshirts, jumpers) wool, cashmere, cotton - H&M do great knitwear most years, the last time I was in Sainsbury’s I was super impressed with theirs.
Chelsea boots in black leather and/or brown suede
Dark denim, khaki or beige toned twill trousers
White jeans will always elevate an otherwise casual look
Loafers and/or driving shoes for summer
Vejas or gazelles with smarter looks, 327s or OC for athleisure looks
Follow Cleo Lacey DemiCouture Stylist on instagram - she epitomises this look imo

Oh noooo I just looked her up out of interest....she is a trashy footballers wife type. I think op was after more classy than that but I may be wrong.
