I want to be a glossy 4x4 mum

I’ve got major envy for those glossy mums who always look effortlessly put-together, the ones who pull up in a gleaming 4x4, wearing an immaculate coat, perfect jeans, and trainers that somehow look fresh and stylish instead of like they’ve been through a muddy football field. Their hair always seems bouncy, their nails are pristine, and they make juggling kids and life look so chic. I know the reality underneath will be different to this perceived polish but I fantasise about gliding around like a glossy mum.

I’m determined to give my wardrobe and look a bit of an upgrade, but I can’t afford to throw money around. I’m obsessed with Vinted, and I’d love some advice on what kind of brands or key pieces I should be looking for to recreate this vibe. Think understated luxury, nothing that screams flashy, just timeless, polished style. I am 42 and would love to dress youthfully but established.

I also feel like there’s some secret to their beauty routines, always glowing skin, neat nails, and perfectly styled hair that looks natural but clearly isn’t. Is this the magic of a Dyson Airwrap and Charlotte Tilbury, or am I missing something?

Basically, how do I create this effortless gloss without bankrupting myself? And is there anyone else out there reinventing themselves via Vinted too? Would love any tips, tricks, or recommendations to help me nail the look! Thank youuuu.

I think Lux fabrics are the way to go. You can’t really go wrong with a cashmere jumper, tweed coat type stuff. It doesn’t need to be flash as quality speaks for itself.

WolfFoxHare · 27/12/2024 20:52

Money. I’m afraid that’s what you need to look so glossy and bouncy.

Nc546888 · 27/12/2024 20:54

get up an hour earlier and do a blow dry etc. I can’t be bothered and that’s why I look like shit at drop off even though we have a shiny 4x4

Doggymummar · 27/12/2024 20:54

Have a look at Old Money reels on insta and tiktok for ideas. VINTED is brilliant but big brands are still expensive and potentially fake. You can copy the style with Cos, Hush Mint Velvet etc though.m

MyStylish40s · 27/12/2024 20:55

Time and money (and being slim helps)

Janedoe82 · 27/12/2024 20:56

Good diet and being slim. Regular exercise. Don’t smoke. Good quality clothes in neutral colours. Can’t wrong with cashmere jumpers and jeans. Long wool coat or good quality long puffer- avoiding black as often looks cheap.

Janedoe82 · 27/12/2024 20:56

Look on White Company website for ideas.

Totally appreciate that time and money is the key to this look but looking for short cuts via Vinted and the like. Are there particular brands that I should be hunting down. Any particular key items?

These glossy 4x4 mums have husbands with big salaries, grandparents who see the kids more than they do, and money to throw at valets and house keepers so they don't have to do any of that crap - leaving them with plenty of time to spend on self care😅

SweetRain · 27/12/2024 20:59

Skinny with good hair (expensive extensions, dyed)
Nails are less important, you could do them at home but hardest for most is to be size 8 or smaller and have great hair.

lochmaree · 27/12/2024 20:59

There's a few of these mum's at DCs school, he's in reception so it's new to me but there's quite a few mums who always look really good and classy, some of them have 3 or 4 kids too! I only have 2! I do drive a 4x4 but it's an estate, almost 15 years old and almost always muddy 😂 as per a pp, I cba to get up earlier and do hair and makeup etc, but I'm also not stylish anyway, preferring mostly hippy style clothing 😁

Janedoe82 · 27/12/2024 21:00

Have a look at Paul Costello at Dunnes Stores- Irish shop but ship to UK. I like his things for this kind of look.

Maybe a capsule wardrobe approach would work well?

Clipclopflop · 27/12/2024 21:02

I think Marks and Spencers are doing this look right now

It’s have school age kids who sleep at night, not working or not working full time and plenty of disposable income so that between the hours of 9 and 3 you can get the car cleaned in the waitrose carpark whilst you nip across the road for a blow dry and nails. Plenty of time to do the laundry properly, no jamming it all into the dryer and hoping for the best, can pay the cleaner an extra hour to do the ironing. Etc. You can buy all the Eric Bompard Brora cashmere you like but you’ll still look bedraggled if the baby had you up several times last night and you’re running late to work with wet hair!

Janedoe82 · 27/12/2024 21:07

Ralph Lauren too. You can get some great fakes on Hacoo

Ineedanewsofa · 27/12/2024 21:09

Neutral toned plain tops (shirts, tshirts, jumpers) wool, cashmere, cotton - H&M do great knitwear most years, the last time I was in Sainsbury’s I was super impressed with theirs.
Chelsea boots in black leather and/or brown suede
Dark denim, khaki or beige toned twill trousers
White jeans will always elevate an otherwise casual look
Loafers and/or driving shoes for summer
Vejas or gazelles with smarter looks, 327s or OC for athleisure looks
Follow Cleo Lacey DemiCouture Stylist on instagram - she epitomises this look imo

fiorentina · 27/12/2024 21:09

Plan outfits the night before including accessories etc.
I would suggest a simple cashmere or wool jumper - I like Uniqlo but look on Vinted for options, well fitting jeans and trainers that coordinate with the outfit - maybe find some you like and then search Vinted for them. I’ve had success that way.

A nice wool coat from Cos or Other Stories via Vinted maybe or a waterproof by Rains or similar. Simple accessories and/or jewellery. A leather handbag, that coordinates colour wise with the outfit.

Ciri · 27/12/2024 21:12

Before you buy anything work out what your colours are, whether you are warm or cool toned, whether you are high or low contrast. This makes an enormous difference to how good you look in an outfit.
Then you need a decent wool coat in the right colour, good boots with the right level flattering heel (which will make you look slimmer than flats) a cashmere scarf and a good bag.

Plus good sunglasses worn year round

Daisyvodka · 27/12/2024 21:15

This is such a small thing, but around here you never see these types in black clothing - lots of navy, lots of blue in general, which does appear to be more universally flattering and always looks a bit more lux.
Also expensive looking hair. Mostly long, and shiny, and all one length - you will get a fringe etc, but no layers. Often casually chucked back in a claw clip - never any bright fashion colours, just strategic highlights. The genetics around our parts are strong though, the posh women and girls all have thick hair!

Clipclopflop · 27/12/2024 21:15

I also wonder if it would be easier if you coveted another look. The too rich to care disheveled look. The look where your clothes are worn thin and you have a mucky old car. This way you will actually be richer and also stepping off the conveyor belt of fashion trends and keeping up appearances.

I've opted for the disheveled mum look. It's approachable and unenviable!

Henrythehappypig · 27/12/2024 21:15

Beige, beige and more beige.

NewDogOwner · 27/12/2024 21:16

Remember that truly middle class/ rich mums don't care how they come across so are more likely to have scrapped back hair and muddy boots (fresh from dog walk or pony visit)
