I'm pleased you've had a positive response and the promise of a new bag but again it does highlight just how different the response has been. Some people getting new bags and others just goodwill gestures like discounts. I suspect the difference in responses to customers emails will be causing more frustration than the initial bag issue.

I've had an apologetic email promising me a larger colourful backpack bag (style unspecified, but it's to replace the small bantry I got) -- except that it's not a replacement, they've said to keep the small bantry as well!

So I'm very pleased about this - well, at least until I see what "colourful" might mean 😂

As an aside, if I were MD/owner of Roka, I'd be FURIOUS with whoever "organised" this debacle which must be costing the company a fair amount of money and, even more importantly, goodwill.

There must be a huge lessons learned event following this. I wonder if they'll go ahead with the lucky dips again in the future.

Pandagram · 02/01/2025 20:11

@TheDogIsInCharge Where is your evidence that the majority of bags being sent out in the lucky dip are under the value promised?

I ordered twice on Boxing Day (because I am a sucker for these things, admittedly), once at 9am and once at 2pm. If the order numbers are sequential, which they appear to be based on previous orders in my history, there were over 1,200 orders in between in just that first day. A vocal few dissatisfied people must be a tiny minority of their total sales.

Yep. Despite the dozens of comments here and on FB it'll be under 10% of the despatch. They are a big company who sells across numerous chains with a wholesale arm, and must manufacture thousands.

They'll keep doing it as it's mostly stuff that didn't sell on Black Friday and it's the best way of clearing unusual colours.

Not the poster you asked but whilst I wouldn't go as far as stating it was the majority of bags it's pretty clear even from just this thread that it's not an insignificant number.

Edited

That's my point though, it actually IS a pretty insignificant number. The people upset with their order are disproportionately represented, people happy are just not looking to talk about it, swap or moan about their "terrible" experience.

If, say, 50 people out of the 150 or so who have posted on this thread were unhappy, that represents 4% of the sales in one 5 hour period. Which is small enough anyway, but they won't all have ordered in that time so it's going to be much, much less.

It's a cheap bag. Don't like it? Sell it. Swap it. Return it. Whatever. But the bitching and moaning like they somehow owe people twice the number of bags plus free shipping plus a discount plus a refund for messing up slightly on the copy is driving me mad.

I feel so sorry for those customer service people at Roka.

Evidence? It's not The Bill, Panda.

Admittedly, I'm going by the number of people posting on here and on the facebook group. Someone there said they were doing a tally and the majority of maxi lucky dips were small Bantry B bags.

Now, as someone said upthread, people who post are more likely to do so if they are upset about the outcome - although I think that's more likely on the Facebook group then here where people were genuinely into the whole lucky dip thang and were along for the ride, merrily posting whatever came in their delivery. And as I said before, some people have really lucked out.

But I do think it is worth knowing the facts. So tomorrow I will email someone more senior than the general customer service email and ask. I deal with PR's and fashion/beauty companies all the time so let's see what they have to say. If I'm wrong I'll come back and tell everyone the actual figures. Happy to be proved wrong.

Out of interest, may I ask if you received what was advertised for your 2 Boxing Day orders?

AlbertCampion · 02/01/2025 21:01

I did the maxi lucky dip and have just received a small Bantry B in emerald. It's a lovely colour and a lovely bag but useless to me as I needed something my laptop would fit in. Does anyone want to swap?

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 02/01/2025 21:02

Has anyone had a Carnaby XL in the dip?

Hohohopeful · 02/01/2025 21:17

I had just decided I'd have to chance a lucky dip as I wanted a bright large bag, when a lovely red large finchley popped up on vinted for £30. I've seen a couple of others in colours I didn't like pop up at similar prices and they are snapped up very quickly so worth checking vinted repeatedly.

I'm so pleased someone has sold them at dip price. Hope others find one they like.

IncessantNameChanger · 02/01/2025 21:25

Large Finchley A in stormy polyester. Very happy, it's massive! Not sure how long it will stay clean for

Roka lucky dip.

I received a small Bantry from a Boxing Day order and as it wasn’t my preference of colour put it straight on vinted and sold it in seconds. I would feel pretty cheeky hounding Roka for a bigger bag/ massive discount, as I took it that all ruck sacks were in the large dip, same as last year.

I wonder how many complainers genuinely didn’t think a small Bantry was a possibility when ordering as opposed to seeing the mistake mentioned here or on Facebook and have decided to see what they can get out of Roka. I know there will have been a few eagle eyed folks that noticed but I doubt that’s the case for most emailing them.

AhBiscuits · 02/01/2025 21:34

I would expect most people, like me, just read that all back packs irrespective of size were in the maxi dip. I didn't look at the values tbh.

IncessantNameChanger · 02/01/2025 16:26

I ordered a maxi on the 27th and it hasn't turned up yet? Anyone else waited this long?

Me! Still waiting, just says pending on my account! A little disappointed!

Neither did I. But I'm using the price thing as a loophole for the fact they sent me black! I thought the whole point of Roka was colour, I would have been happy with literally anything else (and am looking at other small bantrys on vinted as I love the size/style).

manpan1 · 02/01/2025 21:40

@sparkysdream I didn't understand the price range of the Midi as soon as the website showed the offer on Boxing Day so I emailed Roka before placing my order. I understood the backpacks and trafalgar were in the maxi dip but what I couldn't understand, was what was left for the midi dips, up to the price of £59.95 because I couldn't see any other products priced higher than £44.95 on the Roka website (except for backpacks and trafalgars). I still can't. I hedged my bets and ordered all 3 sizes on Boxing Day morning. I still haven't received a reply from them nor my order. I wouldn't complain if my bag were slightly under valued but I do think it's wrong to offer a price range that is overestimating the value of the contents. Maybe there are other products in the dips that are not on the website.... time will tell. But I do think a lot of people genuinely trusted the price ranges because that was the key description on each of the dips and like me, many people would have scoured the website checking for prices to work out which products they wanted to aim for and therefore which price range of luck dip to opt for.

OvaHere · 02/01/2025 21:43

I'm wasn't familiar with the Roka products when I ordered but I did (wrongly) assume that all their rucksacks in the maxi dip would be usable to carry the average size laptop.

I think that small Bantry's should be in the midi category because the vast majority of people who want a rucksack at a minimum want something suitable for work, college etc.

I haven't emailed or complained to Roka btw - I'll just put it on Vinted and treat it as a lesson learned. I do feel somewhat misled though, whether I'm justified feeling that way I'm not sure but I'm not alone.

MamaTrois · 02/01/2025 21:44

I absolutely did look at values for the maxi dip.

Due to the values, I thought that the small Bantry wouldn't be included, and that worked in my favour because it would be next to useless for me. I thought the small Finchley and Canfield would be more useful than a small Bantry (because of the side drinks pockets - making it more useful for trips out with the little ones). Anything medium or up would be useful.

mauvish · 02/01/2025 22:30

I looked at the promised price range and the promised bright colours (the website actually says "guaranteed"). I chose to participate at all based on the latter, and chose the maxi category based on the former. So I don't think I'm being over demanding in feeling a little put out to receive a cheaper item in dull grey.

FWIW, I suggested in my email to Roka that I'd accept it if they reimbursed me the price difference between the midi and maxi LD. The fact that they've offered more than that is due to their generosity (?), not to the level of fuss I made.

Mines just been delivered. Am impressed as I wasn't expecting it until Monday. I got a small bantry as well which isn't terrible but it's black and I was kind of hoping for something a little more exciting so I'm open to swapping if anyone wanted something a bit more inconspicuous. 😂

Apparently my colour might be 'lemongrass', are you still interested in a swap? x

Yes I'm still interested. I have a small black Bantry. 😁
