My mum wants a bed jacket for Christmas but she says she doesn’t want one that “looks like it is for an old lady”. I have no idea where to look and hadn’t heard of a bed jacket before this conversation. Any ideas?

I found these... but I'm afraid they are very granny looking (and I'm a granny!)

I admit I have an adidas jacket that I save for bed. Great for reading in bed since I don't het all tangled in my dressing gown, and the sleeves are slim to keep me warm when reading. Plus then I just zip it off when I'm ready to sleep!

So you might find her a cosy loose cardigan that will serve the same purpose. If you want to go lux, then a cashmere zip hoodie?

Can I jump on to ask if anyone can find me a fleecy wrap and not a jacket as such?
When I'm in hospital I need something for sitting up in bed, but because of hot flushes (thanks menopause) I end up having a fight with my sleeves to rip it off quick.
So ideally a fleece/borg shawl of some sort if one exists.

LigamentBandy · 05/12/2024 00:32

@MrsDrDear you can buy fleece/borg by the meter online and in some haberdashery shops would that work? Not sure if it would need edging or not.
Primark scarf you could check the website?
Amazon has lots of fleece ponchos that are available.
Tho maybe start a new thread?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 05/12/2024 00:35

What kind of budget?
Cashmere zip-up hoodie kind of budget?

Not strictly what you asked for, but I get hot/cold/hot/cold issues with migraines, and the thing I’ve found that I absolutely adore is a Rumpl blanket. They do do Sherpa lined ones as well if you like it fluffy, but my favourite is the standard shiny-both-sides one! It’s so light and comfortable you hardly know it’s there. It seems to be just the perfect temperature most of the time, but easily flung if you start steaming. And it packs down really small(like a very small sleeping bag) for taking to and from hospital.

I don't know why I didn't think of that, my friend is handy with a sewing machine so I could ask her, thanks!

LigamentBandy · 05/12/2024 00:41

@MrsDrDear or a poncho style might work? Easy shape to sew.

MrsDrDear · 05/12/2024 00:43

Thanks @LozzaChops101 I'll take a look.

Sorry OP for highjacking your thread!

I am also on the hunt for one for my mother, will report back if I find anything!

LigamentBandy · 05/12/2024 00:53

Woolovers? More cardiganstyle but could tick a box?

echt · 05/12/2024 01:01

Bed jackets seem to be of three types : modern and fleecy; vintage and crochet or vintage slinky/glamorous.

IMHO the first is ugly, warm and old lady (I'm 70 so allowed to say this)
Vintage and crochet can be worn in a spirit of irony, are warm so might bypass the OL stigma.
Vintage and slinky are very nice but not warm.

It all depends on what the OP's mum wants.

The Bed-Jacket: Boudoir to Evening

I admit to a fondness for a bed-jacket. Unless they are vintage clothing buffs, most people under a certain age these days have never heard of such a garment. In general bed-jackets are lacy, elegant and feminine and although originally made for the b...

I seem to remember Sybil Faulty wearing one while sitting in bed smoking and chatting on the phone. They used to be pink quilted affairs with the odd bit of lace. For wearing when sitting in bed reading or whatever in a cold bedroom.

John Lewis have this fleecy top. Nice and cosy looking.

This soft cotton jacket popped up on Google unbidden. A bit pricey but definitely not old lady wear.

Remember all those 'Chinese' padded cotton jackets that were around in the Spring? Yumi still does them, and I've forgotten which brands were the ones I felt I Must Have (because I resisted!) Like this:

That's rather gorgeous @FuckItItsFine

This one is reminiscent of the Sybil Fawlty variety though I'm sure hers was quilted.

Indian cotton jacket brings up some beautiful jackets as does kantha & kimono . I know they are not bed jackets, but they have a soft cosy warmth
One hundred stars? I've not looked recently

I am currently wearing one, from M&S several seasons ago. It’s like a normal fleece dressing gown but shorter. Very useful for wearing in bed because you’re not sitting on it.

I think it needs to open down the front, for ease of getting into and out of it.

MiddleClassWomanOfACertainAge · 05/12/2024 02:00

I've never seen anyone look good in a quilted garment, and yes, I do include coats.
