Bed jackets

My mum wants a bed jacket for Christmas but she says she doesn’t want one that “looks like it is for an old lady”. I have no idea where to look and hadn’t heard of a bed jacket before this conversation. Any ideas?

The quintessential 21st century bed jacket would be this one from Toast.

Kantha jacket

Or, if you prefer, this one:

Dobby jacket

They’re not cheap, but there’s no reason why they should be. I can’t remember if they generally go into the sale. They’re very lovely.

@MrsDrDear I see you have already been given some good suggestions but I’ll throw another one in anyway! I have this scarf in brown which I ended up wearing in bed on a trip away because the hotel room was so cold. It was lovely and warm and now I wear it at night in bed when I’m reading as it keeps the chill off while keeping my arms free from the shackles of sleeves!

Sorry, but most of these are truly horrid 😂. How about this OP?
I like the red and the pink.

Oh I love the berry colour- just bought for my mum, thanks!

They used to be quilted and silky no idea where you can find them these days!

I remember these my granny managed to get me some as a child , I used to sit up reading and she was worried id be cold. I have not seen these type for years

Can I jump on to ask if anyone can find me a fleecy wrap and not a jacket as such?
When I'm in hospital I need something for sitting up in bed, but because of hot flushes (thanks menopause) I end up having a fight with my sleeves to rip it off quick.
So ideally a fleece/borg shawl of some sort if one exists.

@MrsDrDear , hope your hospital stay goes well. I don’t know if this helps but when I am sitting up in bed reading or having a cup of tea I put my dressing gown on backwards, so my arms are in the sleeves but the back of the dressing gown is covering my front. Not elegant, but does the trick.

Edinburgh Woollen Mill might be worth a look. Just a couple of things.

MrsDrDear · 05/12/2024 09:35

Thanks @viques that's a good idea! I'll be in for a few weeks and I normally take my home comforts. (mattress topper, desk fan for the flushes)
I've got a couple of borg/fleece cardigans, and I've just ordered another one thanks to @fivebyfivebuffy 😂 (the green hooded M&S one)

AsWithGlad · 05/12/2024 10:52

That looks very like mine, @NeedANewOne25 , except that the collar on mine is flatter.

I do recommend something like that. Although I normally avoid polyester completely for clothing I’d make an exception here because the jacket is warm, lightweight, doesn’t crease and is easy to wash and dry.

I think this could work - thank you! I've ordered the berry and we'll see.

@GodRestYouMerryGentlewench the kantha jackets are stunning. My only concern is if they aren't snuggly enough to be comforting in bed. We do have a Toast store near us though so I might pop in and have a look at it in person.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. DM is 75 and accepts that objectively she is an 'old lady' but she looks much younger than her age and dresses quite fashionably, and I think doesn't want to look like a stereotypical granny with cardigan and pearls.

Surely a bed jacket or wrap has to be in a cosy fabric, be able to keep the neck, shoulders and upper body warm (the rest of you is in bed!) and be put on/off easily so no zips etc just a tie belt maybe. The Pour Moi suggestion is the best one here. Job done!

User43329066 · 05/12/2024 14:27

A bed jacket needs to be short so that is doesn't cause rucking discomfort or bedsores where you are leaning back in the bed. anything longer than about waist length isn't a bed jacket

WickedlyCharmed · 05/12/2024 14:37

I recently bought a couple of M&S short dressing gowns from Vinted for a relative in hospital to wear in bed. I got them for £2 each.

Her long dressing gown was all bunched up behind her and was making her uncomfortable.

I use a short cashmere waterfall wrap cardigan with PJs for lounging. Not the height of style but not a granny bed jacket 😂 It’s short so you don’t end up sitting on it, no uncomfortable buttons to lie on and you can pull it around you for extra warmth. Mohair or Merino wool or any soft and snuggly yarn would still be lovely but cheaper than cashmere.

@WickedlyCharmed That's really pretty, and looks so much better quality then what's available in the shops at the minute, ( I recently had to do the hospital dressing gown game with very short notice) I would have loved that, I wonder why that style of dressing gown vanished.
The cashmere message came as I was writing. I took a cashmere dressing gown for surgery at the start of the year , but wouldn't again (that's why I had to buy another) it felt lovely but velcro on the blood pressure cuff has ruined it.

Edited

I bought two and they are both like brand new but I can’t find any trace of them online so I’m assuming they just be a few years old.

I’m tempted to get one for myself to wear during the day round the house, I tried one on and it’s much warmer and easier on and off than a cardigan.

M&S do a lovely one for £20

I wear a nice soft hoody to bed when it's very cold or as a dressing gown for the top half when just getting out of bed.

Etam had nice 3 part PJs recently, top, bottoms and a big matching jumper/jacket.

The zip on my hoody doesn't really bother me when lying in bed.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 05/12/2024 16:38

I’m currently cuddled up in a black fleece job from Morrison’s a couple of years old. No buttons, hip length. I have been known to nip to the shop in it. Noticed they currently have similar, but patterned if you want cheap and cheerful.

LigamentBandy · 05/12/2024 16:48

@Gwenhwyfar

Etam, etam?! I didn't know it still existed I'm off too Google now (slightly excited, hoping not to be disappointed!)
Thank you!
