Help! Going out of my mind...

Style-and-beauty geniuses of Mumsnet, I need you!

My partner's sister is getting married at the end of the month - winter wedding at a hotel in Glasgow.

I have been looking for WEEKS for a dress to wear and have got myself completely tied in knots.

Can someone please help suggest some dresses I could go for? Budget's up to £200-ish.

I'm 5'4, size 8-10, blonde, and 'officially' an hourglass shape but don't have much going on in the boob area. Don't suit most dark colours or jewel tones, although could manage a navy or warm green. I like a plunge neckline (lack of boobage means they tend to sit nicely) and dresses with a bit of swing in the skirt. My partner's wearing a muted green tweed three-piece, so I'm considering that element in the mix, too.

I've been considering velvet, or something nicely structured and fitted in a sturdy-ish fabric, but cannot for the life of me find anything that feels appropriate.

Needs to be warm enough (or something that I can add a stole or shawl to), partner's-family-appropriate, and able to be delivered soon!

Any suggestions VERY welcome – I'm feeling crazy!

Bit too 'evening' maybe?

clubllondon.com/products/snowflake-bottle-green-velvet-bardot-bow-detail-midi-dress-cl130064047

But fits with your DH suit.

puzzleofapuzzle · 09/11/2024 09:59

There seem to be lots of options from Club London here but I can't quite figure out which would be appropriate

And I love the cape detail on this one, but the green is a bit dark for me and the neckline wouldn't suit

Couldn't link but this has a fuller skirt (Next website).

Ha! I was JUST on that website looking at those dresses too!

There's one similar to that one that isn't in velvet, so I wondered if that might be less 'eveningy' – and then this blue one keeps catching my eye, but it might be a bit sexy for a family wedding...?

@BarkLife that gold one definitely looks like it'd be fun to twirl in – might be a bit on the chilly side, though.

Am I just being overly picky here or is this really hard?! 😂

Coincidence! 👀

Yes those dresses accentuate the curves, don't they? I feel like a fuller/swingier skirt might work better.

Edited

Choosing dresses is impossible. I've started only buying them from Vinted, so it doesn't matter if screw it up!

Sorry, but that doesn't say wedding to me at all; not unless you are hoping to have all eyes on you, rather than the bride. A lot of those dresses on that site seem to be going for sexy and are very clingy, which isn't what I expect a wedding guest to be wearing.

hettie · 09/11/2024 10:29

Or something less clingy

Have a look on Roman website. I've had a couple of dresses from them, the sizing is accurate and they often have jackets to compliment too.

puzzleofapuzzle · 09/11/2024 10:38

Thanks @hettie - I think the neck on that first one is a bit high, but I'll check out Wolf and Badger a little more!

How do we feel about this one?

Too boring?

I like the style, but I always worry about black for a wedding....

BeetledBrow · 09/11/2024 13:01

I don’t understand why you haven’t gone straight to Me and Em? Grin

(Ok, an extra £50 or so … But you’d have something flattering and not just for a single event.)

hettie · 09/11/2024 13:03

Sorry... It's navy isn't it ..
World look great with a burgundy or dark green statement necklace

GlasgowGal82 · 09/11/2024 13:28

I'd be cautious over focusing too much on warmth - it's really not that cold in Glasgow this year (I've been out and about this morning without a jacket) and venues tend to be well heated so you might find yourself overheating during the party. If I was going to a wedding at the end of the month I wouldn't think twice of wearing that gold next dress for example with a pair of sheer tights and a wee jacket or stole for travelling. Unless you're going to be spending lots of time outside (unlikely due the likelihood of rain!) you'd be totally fine in something like that. I got married in Glasgow in the winter and some of the guests from down south acted like they were coming to the polar north (including some of OH's parents friends who declined the invite on the basis that travel would be too risky). It was about 10 degrees and sunny on the day!

puzzleofapuzzle · 09/11/2024 14:49

@BeetledBrow I find Me and Em stuff a bit bland for an 'event', to be honest – clearly lovely fabrics and cuts, but their Occasion dresses seem to be stuff I might wear for an important work meeting😄

@hettie, yep, I thought it was black at first too, but it's navy. Can always jazz it up a bit, as you say, with jewellery – and avoid the Addams Family vibe 😂

Thanks, @GlasgowGal82 - I live in Italy usually so this is very helpful info!

@GettingStuffed that looks fun! I wonder how long it is on a shorter person...

An NRBY silk dress ?

https://nrbyclothing.com/search?q=dress&type=product%2Cpage%2Carticle&options%5Bunavailable_products%5D=last&options%5Bprefix%5D=last

I'm not going go link individual ones as basically I love their clothes

Also consider their velvet suits, your slim enough to not look like a sofa and I think they've a green one

With a velvet suit you can wear both pieces as separates after Smile
