Help! Going out of my mind...

Style-and-beauty geniuses of Mumsnet, I need you!

My partner's sister is getting married at the end of the month - winter wedding at a hotel in Glasgow.

I have been looking for WEEKS for a dress to wear and have got myself completely tied in knots.

Can someone please help suggest some dresses I could go for? Budget's up to £200-ish.

I'm 5'4, size 8-10, blonde, and 'officially' an hourglass shape but don't have much going on in the boob area. Don't suit most dark colours or jewel tones, although could manage a navy or warm green. I like a plunge neckline (lack of boobage means they tend to sit nicely) and dresses with a bit of swing in the skirt. My partner's wearing a muted green tweed three-piece, so I'm considering that element in the mix, too.

I've been considering velvet, or something nicely structured and fitted in a sturdy-ish fabric, but cannot for the life of me find anything that feels appropriate.

Needs to be warm enough (or something that I can add a stole or shawl to), partner's-family-appropriate, and able to be delivered soon!

Any suggestions VERY welcome – I'm feeling crazy!

I haven’t read the full thread but have you thought about a jumpsuit? Look on atom label, they have a gorgeous forest green off the shoulder long sleeved one at £205. I’ve had a short sleeved version and as someone with little boobage it was quite flattering

I’m embarrassed to say I’m crap at links…

@ConstanceM can I ask what events would warrant a new outfit for you, if not a family members wedding? As the OP will be in photos presumably, so a certain code of dress will be expected of her.

And aside from buying second hand, which would presumably not be easy due to the OP needing something to fit an hourglass figure and height requirements, where would you recommend she looks for clothes that aren't high street fast fashion, that makes £200 seem an extreme amount of money?

I'm just asking this because your first post came across as judgemental that she would be willing to spend £200, and I wondered why that was necessary in this context and on the style and beauty forum?

@ConstanceM
I don't need to learn thanks. I'm an avid shopper of TK Maxx. Love it.
Can you tell me how many times you've gone in there looking for a specific item- in this case a dress, in the right size, colour, fit, length and looking classy enough for a family wedding in an Edinburgh city hotel, so fairly upmarket- and found exactly the right item. Slim to no chance. TK Maxx is great- as long as you aren't being specific.
Here's a link. TK Maxx, dresses in the possible right size, 47 available. How many of them hit the other criteria?

TWO HUNDRED++ POUNDS £££💷 ON A DRE$$. 👀 Different World.
Would you wear it twice?

What was the point of this?
Two hundred pounds is really, really not much for a good quality dress.
In an ideal world we would all be paying this, it's the real cost of manufacture.
Your cheap clothes that you're probably really proud of paying v little for cost everyone but you and the company taking your money. They cost the planet. They cost people all down the supply chain and across the globe who work for practically nothing.
Some of us can't afford to clothe ourselves any other way so okay. But it's nothing to be proud of.

This Green velvet dress by Oliver Bonas might work. Although the neckline is high.

Beautiful dress!

Along the same lines as this, please check out Vinted or potentially hiring a dress via Hurr or similar. I recently bought a dress for a wedding which would have been £300 new for £50 and it had been worn once and was in perfect condition.

Pluvia · 14/11/2024 15:18

Just found this Ghost dress. It looks as if it would suit your figure. Not sure about the colour but it might, accessorised with jewellery and bright (pink or coral?) bag and shoes work well with your partner's green tweed suit. Not as clingy or overtly sexy as some of those you've been looking at, but I think it could be eye-catching.

I saw this lRL and it's lovely.

owlexpress · 14/11/2024 20:31

These seem massively overpriced for what they are. And it's not a 'Scottish theme', it's a Scottish wedding. It would be unusual for a female guest to turn up in a tartan dress. Different if it's a man wearing a proper kilt.

WhatNext24 · 15/11/2024 20:07

I love this for a winter wedding though appreciate it doesn't fully fit your brief. Would look great with you partner's suit and there is a matching jacket too:
