What do we think to long hair?

I've been growing it for three years. But have the urge, after losing 4.5 stones (another 4 to go) to revisit the shoulder length bob I always had a loved.

Things I am thinking about...

  • Always thought women who have long hair have their shit together.
  • I worry that that I can look drab with long hair as it's usually tied back
  • Struggling with needing to wash my hair every day for alternate day because it gets greasy.
  • I am peri menopausal. My hair falls out each time I wash it. I love hair thick lovely hair. What if it looks meh at my shoulder?
  • I get lots of compliments on my hair when it is done and down and straightened.
  • My hair is dark brown. Greys starting to come through.

I have an appt next Wednesday and need to make a decision. Am also conscious that I am knackered from lack of sleep so my thinking isn't straight.

Thoughts please....

Go for the bob...:) that's my vote

Illpickthatup · 29/10/2024 11:26

I got a bob just over a year ago and love it. It's made my hair look thicker and it's so much easier to manage. I've never thought someone with long hair has their shit together any more than someone with short hair. Probably the opposite to be honest as bob requires more frequent haircuts.

I'm 60 and have long wavy hair. I can't afford £50 for a haircut. I may need to bite the bullet once it goes totally grey

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/10/2024 11:40

I’m 60 with long naturally blonde hair. I really like it. Beginning to grey at the temples now. Looking forward to long grey hair at 70.

StarlightLady · 29/10/2024 11:43

I’m only just younger than you. Legally blond with long hair!

TossedSaladandSE · 29/10/2024 11:44

Longer hair is easier to maintain for me I'm in my 50's

If I had it cut into a bob I'd find it such a pfaff to blow dry and get cut more often

My hair is so much healthier now I stopped smoking a good few years ago and I rarely drink

My skin and hair is so much better

I eat healthily too but I always have really

sommerjade · 29/10/2024 11:46

I'm 48 and trying to grow my hair

TossedSaladandSE · 29/10/2024 11:46

My old neighbour had really long white hair into her 90's which she always had up in a sort of bun.

So that's what I'll be doing once it get thinner and wispier

I like to do stuff with my hair like plait it etc

smallsilvercloud · 29/10/2024 11:49

I think go half way? if a bob is dramatically shorter, then it takes longer to grow out, I once did it 20 years ago and vowed never to do it again, and kept it long however if you loved it before then you know what works for you.

Anicecumberlandsausage · 29/10/2024 11:49

I have thick course brown hair, greying at the front. It's past my shoulders. Yes, I'm losing a bit due to peri but thankfully there's tons left. I don't plan to cut mine anytime soon. My dad actually asked me why my hair isn't short now (he has this idea once you hit 40 women should cut their har off, as does my mum) and I said, I hate salons, my hair sticks out whilst short and also it's just far easier to just twist it into a clip and go. I can't be arsed with styling and faff.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 29/10/2024 11:50

I’m 53 and have long hair, it’s sort of finishes just below bra strap. I’ve had all lengths and styles of hair all my life but like it this length now. It’s in good condition though despite having highlights.

You’re probably similar to me. I have fine hair but lots of it. I also can’t be bothered styling it much and with the cut I have I don’t need to worry.

I think it’s thinned slightly due to perimenopause and now menopause. A friend and neighbour recently told me the other day that in autumn you shed a bit more hair, don’t know how true that is.

SlowPonies · 29/10/2024 11:55

Long hair is more versatile.

Lots of different looks depending on the day, energy, occasion.

Youthful ponytail, chic chignon, messy bun, high bun, down straight or curled, French plait, long or short fringe…

CoolPlayer · 29/10/2024 11:55

I have long hair and will be cutting it shorter soon as it spends most of the time just thrown up quick anyway x

Stormyweatheroutthere · 29/10/2024 11:57

Mine was long until 51....stopped dyeing it at 52. Mid length and all grey at 53!!

Lostsadandconfused · 29/10/2024 12:02

I still have long hair at 56, I’ll cut it one day but not while it’s still thick and shiny.

Nothatgingerpirate · 29/10/2024 12:08

Nice.
If it was feasible for myself to have long hair,
I would have it till 97! 😁
But it's fine and a bit thin, so a short bob it is at 45!

Rainbowdottie · 29/10/2024 12:11

I'm 50 with long hair. In my 20s and 30s I had every style and colour going, in my early 40s I had the shortest "Rihanna " cut. I know long hair suits me the best. I look back at pictures (and I hate myself in pictures ) but long hair is where it's at for me.

My hair has also changed immensely in the last 2 to 3 years due to medication and health issues. It's coarser ,it's drier....and if any hairdressers got their hands on it, I'm sure they'd love to cut inches off it. I'm not a hairdresser fan and at 50 I'm OK with that. It's my hair and I shall do what I want with it, despite the many tiktoks telling me otherwise. I have years and years of being a dedicated customer to a few hairdressers and I just don't feel that way anymore 🤷. Even if I cut my hair into a bob today, it would look great until I came to styling it myself which I know now I couldn't do..and I know in 3 months if would just look like what my hair does now ,only shorter because that's the texture and condition of my hair.

I think you need to look at what you really want from your hair, what you want to spend in time and money in upkeep, appointments, colour etc and also your own expectation of it....can you style it well yourself, can you dedicate time to do it every morning, wash it x amount of times a week. I don't actually want to style, wash or heat my hair much so long hair suits that. I also don't have the capabilities or enthusiasm to do a big blow out bob....I guess it's all down to how much time money and effort you can give to all of it

Lovemybunnies · 29/10/2024 12:19

I would love to have a bob but have a kink in my hair that means it needs styling every day. When it’s long I don’t need to do that. I used to think I would cut my hair after 40 but now I’m 50 and still like it longer.

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/10/2024 12:32

I’m older than you with long, blonde hair with currently a pink tint. Had a pixie cut until Covid then just let it grow and have had so many compliments I am sticking with it. I don’t do grey either, no way!

Redcrayons · 29/10/2024 12:37

I’m not a big fan of really long hair at any age past teens. Just past the shoulders works best on me. A short Bob requires a lot more styling than I can be bothered with.

It had a pixie cut in my 20s which I loved but the maintenance was too much.

Onestepfromendingitall · 29/10/2024 12:56

Long hair past 40/45 is a bit..... Immature in my personal opinion

Immature comment. A very dated attitude too.

I have long, thick hair in great condition. At 50 I have no intention of cutting it. Most of my friends have long hair too. Women all well groomed and not adhering to some ridiculous notion long hair after 45 is a no-no.

There's always one! 🙄

Mid fifties, long blonde/grey hair. It's all different shades now, and I love it so much.

Whenever I'm out and about, I always have at least one random stranger tell me my hair's amazing!

No bobs here!

Frillylillies · 29/10/2024 13:13

Short hair is high maintenence which is fine if you don't mind frequent hairdresser trips and the ££.

I'm hoping I can keep mine shoulder length or longer as long as possible for that reason!
