What do we think to long hair?

I've been growing it for three years. But have the urge, after losing 4.5 stones (another 4 to go) to revisit the shoulder length bob I always had a loved.

Things I am thinking about...

  • Always thought women who have long hair have their shit together.
  • I worry that that I can look drab with long hair as it's usually tied back
  • Struggling with needing to wash my hair every day for alternate day because it gets greasy.
  • I am peri menopausal. My hair falls out each time I wash it. I love hair thick lovely hair. What if it looks meh at my shoulder?
  • I get lots of compliments on my hair when it is done and down and straightened.
  • My hair is dark brown. Greys starting to come through.

I have an appt next Wednesday and need to make a decision. Am also conscious that I am knackered from lack of sleep so my thinking isn't straight.

Thoughts please....

Long hair is more versatile.

Lots of different looks depending on the day, energy, occasion.

Youthful ponytail, chic chignon, messy bun, high bun, down straight or curled, French plait, long or short fringe…

So this is a really good point. I never do anything other than tie it up in an elastic! Maybe I should watch some YouTube to work out what else I can do...

Don’t you know it’s law that women ‘past a certain age’ must have a bob, preferably blonde highlights to hide the grey.

No long hair, curly hair, pixie cut, or anything other than blonde bob allowed.

ScruffMuffin · 06/02/2025 19:12

Pah. I'm 47, and will never not have long hair, because I like it. I think my hair's amazing 🤣 which is just as well, because I'm plump and plain. About 5% grey now, but I'm not bothered.

Are photos still disabled on the site?

Gettingbysomehow · 06/02/2025 19:30

Do you have to decide now? Decide some other time.
I'm 63 and have long hair down to my bum with white either side of my face. I'm never cutting it.
I do live in Glastonbury though and quite a few older people here men and women have long hair.
But I do have a respectable career. Who wants to be the same as everyone else.

alwaysontheloo · 06/02/2025 20:08

I have long hair to my boobs. It suits me and I've always had long hair.
I'm 52.
Fuck anyone who says that women over 40 should have shorter hair.
It's my hair and I will have it how I like.
I rarely tie it up these days and it takes me no time to maintain. I do love an Olaplex treatment that I do myself once a week, keeps it nice and soft and shiny.

ScruffMuffin · 06/02/2025 20:14

Mine is just above waist length, which is on the short side for me. It's auburn with a few greys, and very wavy. I like it!

Pickandmixusername · 06/02/2025 20:16

How about collar bone length? That's what I'm going for (growing out a bob)!

soccermum10 · 06/02/2025 20:17

I have long hair. I would love to go a little shorter but everytime I do it just doesn't sit as good. My hair is thick and has a natural wave and when it's long I don't need to do much to it which is good 🙂

Long hair past 40/45 is a bit..... Immature in my personal opinion

🤣🤣 I'm 41, so I'm proud to be 'immature' as you so put it

veraswaistcoat · 06/02/2025 21:20

I have it written in my POA - never to have hair cut short 😂😂

CharSiu · 06/02/2025 21:23

My friend has long hair at 61 but has really beautiful thick wavy hair that she highlights. If it’s thin in any way which does happen more in older women then don’t do it.

Daft comment.

The mature thing to do is not to give a damn about judgmental people and have your hair in the way that makes you happy...

Hazel665 · 06/02/2025 21:31

I'm 58 and I have long hair. Easy to just tie it up for work. Only have it down on a rare night out. Prefer it long - just easy.

AliceMcK · 06/02/2025 21:34

49 long fine blonde hair. I’ve definitely taken more care of it as I get older. I cut it short about 8 years ago, I liked it but found it harder to maintain, needed more regular trims and colouring. That was the only time I’ve had short hair, I’ve had long hair my whole life in a variety of colours.

my hair gets greasy, it’s down on washing day, up in a claw clip the next day, at a push if I really dont wash it on day 3 it’s dry shampoo and a scruffy bun.

Im liking it at the moment, I can enjoy it straight, curly, up or down. I’m a dirty blonde naturally, been dying it for years, over summer I can go 5 months without needing a colour as it naturally lightens in the sun, but have my roots done roughly 8/10 weeks otherwise.

Berlinlover · 06/02/2025 21:35

I’m 48 and lost all my hair due to chemo. It started growing back last August but is just a short curly mess. Short hair really doesn’t suit me and I just want to look like a woman again.

What immature about having long hair?

Emotionalsupporthamster · 06/02/2025 21:37

I’m growing my bob out. I do like it but I’m fed up not being able to put it up. I’m looking forward to being able to get it in a proper bun. I really don’t think age should be a consideration in it, just go for whatever you fancy until you want a change.

AlteredStater · 06/02/2025 21:37

Nearing 70 and still have long hair just past shoulders, not grey yet. Short hair doesn't suit me at all so it'll have to stay long!

Ferrazzuoli · 06/02/2025 21:38

I'm 50 and I love my long hair. I usually wear it loose rather than tied back.

ruethewhirl · 06/02/2025 21:40

I'm 57 and my hair is never going shorter than shoulder length again. I look horrible with it short.

babyproblems · 06/02/2025 21:41

Love long hair on anyone but particularly the older the better. I think it’s really gorgeous! I’m a bit bored of bobs tbh. I also think my hair looks less tidy when short because the weight doesn’t hold it down! And you can’t feel boho and relaxed about it like you can when it’s long. When it’s long and natural it’s boho but when it’s short and natural it’s just a mess 😂

curious79 · 06/02/2025 21:47

My Dutch grandmother was beautifully elegant and impossibly cool. She had long dark hair well into her old age which she either wore in a chignon or down. I know another glamorous (also Dutch) lady who has slightly long just beyond shoulder length blonde hair. Again this is at 70. Looks stunning. It’s so practical having short hair. Maybe a Bob suits you? Or maybe you’ll just look like yet another practical middle-aged lady. ;)

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 06/02/2025 21:58

I have long curly hair (it's actually longer than it looks and I'm always surprised at how long it actually is when I go to get it cut), I will never ever get it cut into a bob. I had one as a child up to about 14, and I hated it and it just brings back shit memories. I'm tempted to grow it longer as I miss the length.

I was also just thinking about lightening it as I'm currently brunette but miss the sunkissed hair I had previously.

doublec · 06/02/2025 22:27

@Berlinlover I really feel for you! Wishing you all the best for any ongoing treatment/ your recovery.

Am in my late 40s and regrowing my hair after chemotherapy. t wasn't losing my hair that was the worst part of chemo, it was regrowing it and having shit hair. (At least when I was bald, there was clearly a reason, whereas now, I worry people will think my hair is intentional. My hair looked chic for about 48 hours last April. Since then, it's growing upwards and is curly and is exactly the same hair I had a child. (And the last time I had short hair). I reckon I have at least another 12 months before it's long enough to tie up.

thrivingonvaugeobjectives · 07/02/2025 16:16

Always thought women who have long hair have their shit together

Can I ask why you think this? Is it because it’s higher maintenance than short hair?
