What do we think to long hair?

I've been growing it for three years. But have the urge, after losing 4.5 stones (another 4 to go) to revisit the shoulder length bob I always had a loved.

Things I am thinking about...

  • Always thought women who have long hair have their shit together.
  • I worry that that I can look drab with long hair as it's usually tied back
  • Struggling with needing to wash my hair every day for alternate day because it gets greasy.
  • I am peri menopausal. My hair falls out each time I wash it. I love hair thick lovely hair. What if it looks meh at my shoulder?
  • I get lots of compliments on my hair when it is done and down and straightened.
  • My hair is dark brown. Greys starting to come through.

I have an appt next Wednesday and need to make a decision. Am also conscious that I am knackered from lack of sleep so my thinking isn't straight.

Thoughts please....

Well I’m 68 and going grey but hate my hair shorter than shoulder length. Such a faff styling short hair, blow drying, turning it under etc.
Ive had it cut into a bob several times when I thought it was “ time”. Each time I’ve grown it back, this time from a shortish bob which just didn’t suit me.
Im going to rely on my adult daughters to tel me if it looks too long and ridiculous!

I’m 60 with long naturally blonde hair. I really like it. Beginning to grey at the temples now. Looking forward to long grey hair at 70.

I am 70 with long silvery grey hair. It is naturally thick and wavy, I tie it back for aqua yoga etc. I lost most of my hair three years ago when I was ill, had to have it cut very short so am really pleased I have got so much now.

@Onestepfromendingitall

'Long hair past 40/45 is a bit..... Immature in my personal opinion'

Daft comment.

The mature thing to do is not to give a damn about judgmental people and have your hair in the way that makes you happy...

But OP is asking for opinions.

OP was a few months ago. No idea how I accidentally managed to resurrect an old thread!

I will never cut mine shorter than bra level. I chopped it all off for charity once. I felt... cold!

Apileofballyhoo · 07/02/2025 18:13

Mine's long but it's always up. I often think about cutting it short as drying it is such a pain, but I've never liked it short.

I am 47 too and always had long hair. Most of my friends of similar ages also have long hair - it’s just the fashion now. But I remember as a teen that most girls at school had short hair or bobs - long hair definitely wasn’t trendy then.

ScruffMuffin · 07/02/2025 18:32

I haven't used heat on mine for 30+ years. So it really does take ages to dry!

@Berlinlover I really feel for you! Wishing you all the best for any ongoing treatment/ your recovery.

Am in my late 40s and regrowing my hair after chemotherapy. t wasn't losing my hair that was the worst part of chemo, it was regrowing it and having shit hair. (At least when I was bald, there was clearly a reason, whereas now, I worry people will think my hair is intentional. My hair looked chic for about 48 hours last April. Since then, it's growing upwards and is curly and is exactly the same hair I had a child. (And the last time I had short hair). I reckon I have at least another 12 months before it's long enough to tie up.

I'm sorry you've had a rough trot of it, chemo is so brutal on the body. x

My DD uses that Mielle Rosemary oil on her scalp and hair as a treatment once a week and has a little silicone scalp massage tool (think it came from Home Bargains but they have some on amazon) and massages the scalp which she says is very relaxing. It stimulates the blood flow and then she wraps her hair in clingfilm and puts a shower cap on, leaves it for half an hour and then shampoos and conditions.
Her hair grew really thick after she started doing this and is glorious now. The oil makes her hair so shiny and conditioned. It might be worth a try and in any case it's a nice treat and a bit of a pamper.
When I do it I have a face mask while I'm waiting for the hair oil to do it's thing. Rosemary does wonderful things in terms of making hair grow!

I think bobs can look really stylish but it actually aged me so I've gone back to long hair.

Loving the resurrection of this thread! I went for something just around shoulder length.

As for me, I'm still unsure, but verging back towards longer hair and am waiting to see how I feel longer term. Depends on how much continues to fall out in peri menopause...

Long hair is more versatile.
Lots of different looks depending on the day, energy, occasion.
Youthful ponytail, chic chignon, messy bun, high bun, down straight or curled, French plait, long or short fringe…
So this is a really good point. I never do anything other than tie it up in an elastic! Maybe I should watch some YouTube to work out what else I can do...

I intend to channel Phylida Laws’ do when my long hair is silver. It’s spectacular.
