What's the winter equivalent of linen trousers?

Matformouse · 21/10/2024 08:40

I'm looking for winter trousers to wear instead of jeans. I want them to be smart/casual like linen trousers can be but would like them to be in a warm comfortable and drapery fabric. What am I looking for? I don't want cargos, joggers or cords as they are too casual or stuff like jeans. But other trousers seem too formal as they come in black grey beige. Any ideas?

Brushed cotton twill or corduroy.

Thee's a blue wool blend wide leg trouser in the Damart sale.

I'd post a link if it weren't stupidly long.

I just bought some thick wide legged trousers from Next, with a drawstring waist but smart enough for work. They seem to do them in pinstripe type patterns, a few different ones.

I live in cashmere trousers in the winter. They feel as comfortable as pj's but are smart enough for anywhere.

Where do you get them? I've got cashmere joggers from, oddly enough, Florence and Fred, which were pretty cheap but don't look smart enough for anywhere past the corner shop. I'd love some more respectable ones.

Half-lined wool crepe trousers are what you need.

These trousers are 10/10! I find wool too itchy, these are warm, comfy and look smart 😊
If you are 5ft 7 or taller I'd recommend the tall pair. Also come in standard length!

Really need the same tbh , there’s nothing I can find at all as I also need extra long leg
I’ve compromised by wearing silk long johns as a base layer, and going up a size in trousers.

NinePines trousers are so buttery soft, comfortable and versatile.

More Uniqlo trousers that look very nice and not so wide-legged:

They look like fat old men trousers!

I live in these in the winter! I wfh and I have 4 pairs and wear them on rotation, they're as comfy as my wide leg linen trousers or my pj trousers. Best thing ever!

Are they warm enough? They look quite summery

Shellekin · 15/12/2024 07:47

I just got these when Hush had a sale on as I had been looking for something similar.
they have an elasticated waist so are very comfy but are smart enough for work and can be worn with trainers or boots. Material is quite thick & warm too. I’m really pleased with them and will wear them loads.

Aren't cashmere trousers a nightmare to wash?

chaosmaker · 16/12/2024 01:24

@Matformouse can't you just wear leggings or tights under the linen trousers?

I would and have done that with black ones but the other ones are a bit more summery in colour and presentation. I don't think they'd go well with thick jumpers or coats.

In the end I bought some grey soft wide leg pull on trousers from Uniqlo, some more black wide leg joggers from Hollister to wear indoors - I only discovered these when I bought them for my daughter and they were too big for her and fit me better. And also I bought some 'denim style' wide leg pull on trousers from M&S. These are my favourite and they are now sold out. I hope they make more.

I find that trousers catch on the thing you're wearing underneath and it creates wrinkles/lumps and can feel uncomfortable.

chaosmaker · 16/12/2024 11:03

I love a few layers, helps me regulate temperature on days when our weather is at it's most British lol

YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo · 16/12/2024 11:37

I have all the trousers! Cord, denim, velvet, wool, thick jersey. Straight legs, widelegs, skinnies, barrel leg. None of them are warm enough by themselves, but since I started wearing thermal leggings underneath, problem solved. M&S do them in different weights, and even the max warmth ones are comfortable under trousers.

I'm in awe of people who can wear thin fabrics like velour and jersey in winter. To me that's like wearing pyjamas - I'd freeze!

Yeah, that depends on where you live. I lived in N of Scotland and lived in my M&T thermal "long johns" as they were known. Now I'm in SE of England and I have absolutely no need for them. Still wear the tops for under jumpers in winter.

I'm a Lancastrian who's lived in Sussex for years. The idea of the South being warmer than the North is much overstated in my experience! It's as cold and wet here as anything I remember from my youth.

I used to get cold however much I turned the heating up. Then I realised it made sense to wear thermals all the time, and suddenly life got a lot more comfortable. I also discovered the joys of the heated throw, and how much cheaper it is to heat a person not a room!

The distance you are discussing is approx half the distance that I'm referencing, so it's very different.
