What's the winter equivalent of linen trousers?

Matformouse · 21/10/2024 08:40

I'm looking for winter trousers to wear instead of jeans. I want them to be smart/casual like linen trousers can be but would like them to be in a warm comfortable and drapery fabric. What am I looking for? I don't want cargos, joggers or cords as they are too casual or stuff like jeans. But other trousers seem too formal as they come in black grey beige. Any ideas?

Another vote for loose fit faux lather. Surprisingly comfortable and versatile.

I can recommend these. Elastic waists never looked so good.

velvet
woollen or part wool, plain or patterned.
dark navy or black ironed jeans.

I wouldn't rule out cords completely, you can get some really soft ones that don't feel too stiff. I can't remember where from but I got a pair that was warm but didn't feel stiff or heavy at all

quirkychick · 21/10/2024 15:10

I was going to say wool, too. Especially if it's cold. I have wool trousers that are second hand, some I've had a long time and a wool/linen mix pair from toast which are slightly cropped/barrel-shaped that I had one Christmas.

I would have said cord but you seem to have ruled that out so the only real substitute is probably going to be wool. But they tend to be pricey and can be itchy. The only other thing that springs to mind is suede but they are likely to be very heavy and won't react well to getting wet.

I wear linen trousers all year round. In winter I layer them over thick cotton tights and leggings. When it's really cold I stick a pinafore dress over the top.

I’m wearing Lucy & Yak Alexa’s right now. Mid weight twill and elasticated waist so very comfortable and fairy warm. Turtle Dove have some very similar I noticed on their advert this morning.

MarkWithaC · 21/10/2024 16:35

Actually, on cords, some of them don't look that casual. I've got some wide-legged and barrel-legged ones, from Uniqlo and Poetry IIRC, and because of the shape and the suggestion of tailoring they look smarter than a skinny pair might.

JellicleCat · 21/10/2024 16:36

Watching with interest as I'm also looking for something smarter than jeans but more casual than work wear trousers. I had spotted the M&S chinos too. Boden do ponte trousers in wide and straight leg but they are a bit more than I wanted to spend.Westbourne Ponte Trousers - Black | Boden UK or Pimlico Ponte Trousers - Navy | Boden UK I also spotted some woolen trousers in their sale.

Wide leg velour joggers - I have some cropped ones to wear with boots and they hang nicely, look reasonably smart and as they are cropped don't drag on the pavements.

Bikessmikes · 21/10/2024 19:07

Corduroy? Equally hard to pull off!

Lovemycat2023 · 21/10/2024 19:26

Have you considered cords? I tried on a wide legged pair in John Lewis today. Didn’t buy as they were black, and I wanted navy or green (or burgundy). Did buy some skinny cords from Next though.

edit - just spotted no cords in the OP

Peaceatlast01 · 21/10/2024 19:32

OP there was a thread maybe about a month ago with the exact same title as yours as some good suggestions, probably worth a search!

PS you said no cords but Seasalt have some wide leg cropped in a variety of colours that will look ace in autumn with boots

Matformouse · 21/10/2024 19:58

ah - thank you. I will have a search.

I'm checking out everyone's suggestions.

Cords - I wouldn't mind if they were a thinner, soft cord.

I’ve just got some of these in the grey. Considering buying another pair or two: www.uniqlo.com/ca/en/products/E472747-000?colorCode=COL06&sizeCode=INS024
