Expectation versus reality - again

Can we do this again?

Got my new glasses today, so excited!

Chunky frames, so cool looking when I tried them on 😀

But the effect it not quite what I was after - I'm basically Harriet the Spy (only in my 50s).

I'm not blonde and I'm not Naomi Watts either but this gives a good illustration of the outcome I think:

Anyone else?

Bump!

I feel your pain. It’s funny how whatever lovely elegant dress I buy I don’t look like the model. When I have 5 stone and at least 25 years on them 😆

ChristmasLightsLover · 14/10/2024 20:30

Bless you. I am in a similar place. I am looking at new frames and unsure on this kind of thing.

Is there a way you can share a photo not blur yourself so we can look for you? Or is that too hard?

ChristmasLightsLover · 14/10/2024 20:31

And also, I am coming to think fuck it. If you love them, you should wear them. I know it can be hard going for it tho.

OrangeCorduroy · 14/10/2024 22:07

Thanks for the nice replies everyone 😊

I dunno, maybe I'm getting used to them now? 🤣

It's just that glasses are so fucking expensive aren't they?

I just couldn't believe that I'd made such a ridiculous and costly mistake 🤦🏻‍♀️

But let's face it, no one's looking at 50 something short women are they? So it's all fine really 😀

Wear them OP, I bet they look great! After all something must have drawn you to them in the first place.

OrangeCorduroy · 14/10/2024 22:21

@Powderblue1 thank you 😊
Yes! I loved them when I saw them.

I was hoping to hear some other recent disappointing experiences 😊
I so related to the Suzi Quattro's fat nan story 🤣

Glasses direct are v good, if you don't like them you can send them back. I sent my current pair back 2 times, once to get a thinner lens and second time to change the colour of the frame. I love the ones I have now.

MorrisZapp · 15/10/2024 08:53

My favourite book! I can think of worse style icons 😁

Floisme · 15/10/2024 08:55

Op I have never in my life picked up new frames from the optician and thought, 'Ooh good choice Flo'. I normally wonder what the hell I was thinking. It takes a few days to adjust, but I've always ended up liking them.

OrangeCorduroy · 15/10/2024 09:06

@Orrinocc0 thanks, yes good idea for the future! It's gutting that you can't have the option to live with them for a week and then return but I can see it's not a great business model!

@MorrisZapp it is an excellent book isn't it? Which cover did you/do you have? I still have this one on the shelf 😊

@Floisme ah thank you for making me feel better 😊
What I think will happen is I'm going to get used to them but strangers won't be prepared.
This morning on the bus I stood up to let a girl off and she had a good stare - even turned around at the door of the bus to have another look 🤣

I bought what I thought was a perfectly nice burgundy checked shirt a few weeks back. I was hoping I'd look all wholesome and outdoorsy. Came downstairs wearing it for the first time and my delightful 17-year-old DS said 'Oh, is that the new shirt you bought the other day? Was it in the logging section?' 😕

OrangeCorduroy · 15/10/2024 11:43

@spiderlight 🤣🤣🤣
So tactful and diplomatic!
I'm sure it looks great!

OP posts:
piccolorhinoceros · 15/10/2024 12:11

@spiderlight I'm a big fan of the lumberjack look!

@OrangeCorduroy I bet you look great, honestly the only differences between the two pics you posted are the facial expression, outfit and confidence! If you focus on pulling together a few sophisticated outfits to wear with them you might feel better?

It's no Suzi Quatro's fat nan, but for me it's the Dancing Leopard Dove dress that is supposed to flatter everyone. Being pretty petite, I looked like I'd borrowed Dumbledore's robes.

GettingStuffed · 15/10/2024 12:40

I can't think of anyone that dancing leopard dress would flatter anyone, certainly no-one over a B cup.

In the summer we went out for family birthdays. I wore a pink patterned dress with cut outs , a beach bag tote, you know the sort of crotchet ones, and a boater. In my mind I looked cool. When I caught sight of myself in a window I looked like a private school headmistress from the 1910s.

henlake7 · 15/10/2024 12:51

Glasses are always a minefield. You can try them on but if you have a strong prescription your eyes wont look the same.
I have huge eyes but am extremely short sighted so they shrink to pissholes in the snow with glasses on.....Im always disappointed!

My current pair are clear frames which Id seen people wearing and looked quite cool at the time. Sadly mine just look like national health ones from the 70s.😒

Blackcat08 · 15/10/2024 13:03

I love those thick framed glasses too, but I don't think I'd pull them off. My contribution-

Skinny Black leather trousers, black blous, chunky biker style boots & my beautiful long grey wool coat = went out and it dawned on me that I looked like I was auditioning for a part in Peaky Blinders! The cap (minus blades!) would have completed the ensemble!Blush

Marmite71 · 15/10/2024 13:08

I went for what, in my head, looked like a chic wavy French bob, even took the plunge and got a little fringe cut in. Two words: Grayson Perry.

Yep, I've done the same. Came out more Emo Philips.

CMOTDibbler · 15/10/2024 13:17

Choosing glasses is such a nightmare, especially as I can't see myself properly when trying them on so am at the mercy of the lovely ladies in the opticians for advice.
My recent Suzy Quattros nan moment was getting seduced by the thought of a pleather skirt. The stylists put them with a soft silk blouse or knitwear and they look great. DH asked if my new career was as a dominatrix, and I have to say I agreed

BalloonSlayer · 15/10/2024 13:23

I got some new round glasses, which always suit me. But my hair keeps going curly/frizzy in all this rain, giving me a real Peggy the Chalet Maid look.

biedrona · 15/10/2024 13:23

It's not just frames. I have this with clothing, shoes. It never looks as cool and effortless on me

CeliaCanth · 15/10/2024 13:44

I ordered a fairly expensive “going out” blouse with ruffles at the shoulder. Expectation - sophisticated woman paying a nod to current trends. Reality - frilled lizard 🦎
