Expectation versus reality - again

Can we do this again?

Got my new glasses today, so excited!

Chunky frames, so cool looking when I tried them on 😀

But the effect it not quite what I was after - I'm basically Harriet the Spy (only in my 50s).

I'm not blonde and I'm not Naomi Watts either but this gives a good illustration of the outcome I think:

I have loads, the problem is that dp doesn't think before her opens his trap

Pink dress with cream spots-you look like Mr blobbys nan

Grey coat-its fireman sam!

Floral dress-a middle aged woman going to a party in a garden centre

A gorgeous dress-my mum had curtains in that fabric

Trousers-my nan had the exact ones-she was wearing them when they took her into hospital, she died not long after

A red dress with tiny spots-my mum had a dress exactly like that in the 80's-she looked crap in it too

A beige coat-inpector gadget

Thankfully I have a thick skin...

Purple pleated skirt wrap dress-
I looked like my favourite quality street chocolate

Floisme · 15/10/2024 15:31

No op sorry but I'm not going to post a self deprecating story to encourage you to stay in your lane and not try something new Smile Your new glasses are cool and so are you. Repeat 100 times every morning until it sinks in.

What does he say when he's trying to be nice? Or after he's picked out what's left of his teeth?
(Mind you the Nan's trousers one was so awful it made me guffaw)

Canadian here... when I was recently in Spain I admired the variety of bold eyeglasses that the stylish were wearing. Go ahead and be bold and stylish!

mdinbc · 15/10/2024 18:53

Also... all the oversize sweaters I'm seeing in shops and on line. I will just look like I work in a fish cannery.

Bittercup · 15/10/2024 19:03

I once tried on a lovely, chunky, off the shoulder brown jumper thinking I would look cosy yet effortlessly stylish. I am quite broad of shoulder and looked like one of the flowerpot men.

KnitFastDieWarm · 15/10/2024 19:10

A linen Baker boy cap.
Expectation: cute and quirky, like a summery version of a beret.
Reality: Lenin in drag.

A long, wavy fringe.
When brushed, it gives the insouciant stevie-nicks-circa-1974 vibe I was hoping for.
BUT
When I first get up in the morning, I look like the love child of pat sharp and the entire cast of spinal tap.

AsFunAsEnglishWeather · 15/10/2024 19:35

@Sharontheodopolodous - I can relate. Bought myself a lovely warm longline cream cardigan (this one, actually: https://mint-teaboutique.com/products/frnch-schana-jacket).

Husband: "Is that a knitted lab coat?" - argh!!!

Birdahoy · 15/10/2024 19:47

Bought myself a lovely spring coat from the Maxmara outlet a couple of years back. Red and white.

Fantasy: Audrey Hepburn flitting around NY. Bold and glamorous.
Reality: The woman who worked at our corner shop in the late 80s. It looked like the old Morrisons uniform, also.

It went in the charity bag.

wastingtimeonhere · 15/10/2024 20:20

Bought new jeans, shirt, bomber jacket, on the model in a picture it looked casual elegance..DH..'you look like a butch lesbian from 1978' ...I've embraced the look! 😅! I don't care what others presume due to stereotypes..I like the look..

Faldodiddledee · 15/10/2024 20:25

The problem with glasses I find, is that in the shop they have clear glass, so you focus on getting the frame right, but with the lenses in, they often look very different, they do for me anyway as I have a high prescription. My most recent ones look like bottle bottoms, and I refuse to wear them, having spent about £400 on them. I'm debating making them into sunglasses.

These big frames may look good if you are young and you have only a tiny correction, but I am not convinced if you already look like a librarian and can't see anything. That said, they are trendy and funky and you probably good! I just hate my new ones, it's the second pair I've refused to wear and I'm still in my dated old ones as at least I think I look nice in them, even if I look unfashionable.

My mum came downstairs one day v pleased with herself- “look at my new dress, I love the fabric!”… yes we know mum, that’s why you bought sofa cushions in it!

She laughed for about 20 minutes, and wore the dress anyway.

Bought a similar thing during lockdown. DH smirking at me every time I wore it.

Eventually 'Morning Obi wan'

That was the end of that 😆

tedlassoforprimeminister · 15/10/2024 20:37

Off topic but I had that edition of that book and loved it too.
Glasses always take done getting used to, but if you like them wear them

The trousers where a mistake-sort of like a checked tartan/granny curtains
He has a hat that makes him look like an egg cosy so he gets it wrong too!

Donchawishyourgurlfriendwashotlikeme · 15/10/2024 21:13

Oh the horseshoe jeans

wore them the first time and came into the kitchen to which DH said ‘are you standing in a wind tunnel?’

Took them straight off and they will be back with mr marks and ms spencer

Why did I ever imagine I could pull them off?

Arraminta · 15/10/2024 21:37

Yeah, recently had hair cropped super short, hoping to look gamine. Nope, look like a dinner lady who plays darts down The Nags Head.

Also treated myself to some tortoise shell spectacles with brass lorgnettes, hoping to look Dark Academic and moody. DH said I reminded him of Hinge & Bracket. Git.

Faldodiddledee · 15/10/2024 21:41

@Arraminta I'm laughing at Hinge and Bracket. That's the danger with Dark Academia as a look if you look much like a middle-aged librarian in the first place.

I kept seeing bobs on other people and they looked amazing. I had one, I did not look amazing. I have no idea why bobs make some people look more stylish, yet have the opposite effect for me?

Mirrrors · 15/10/2024 23:53

When my hair started falling out after I had my first baby I thought I’d cut it short and it would look really chic and be easy to style. Unfortunately even more fell out and it was so thin it looked awful- and I couldn’t tie it up to disguise it! I clearly didn’t learn my lesson because I’ve done the same thing this time around, luckily it’s hat season at least 😭
