Nice waterproof coat with proper hood

Hello!

I am after a properly waterproof coat, knee length or below (I secretly love rugby coach duvet coats), with an actually functional large hood that will fit over headphones. Over the ear headphones that is. I do an awful lot of dog walking while listening to audiobooks! I would like to look stylish. Don’t mind spending a bit.

any ideas?

We need to be looking at outdoor brands to be properly waterproofed, they are measured for how waterproof, 10,000 is the minimum level I consider.

Didriksons are fairly good from the looks department (5-10k rated) though not as waterproof as mountain warehouse at 10k minimum

Not exactly what you're looking for, I know, but I've lived in this in the torrential downpours we've had this week. The hood is massive (easily go over woolly hat) and the fit is loose enough for a thick jumper. It could do with some closure on the cuffs but it did mean the rain dripped down my arms and straight off. Anyway, someone else will come up with something much classier, I'm sure!

Rains coats are a scandi brand and definitely waterproof (and stylish). They are unlined though so for warmth you’d need layers.

Fiestafiesta · 01/10/2024 17:28

Thank you all! I actually like them all a fair bit. Would prefer something a bit fleecier maybe

I have an Ilse Jacobsen rain coat that I've had for 10+ yrs and still looks good. It's a Danish make and v waterproof. Mine is a Hornbaek in green.

Another chance to sing the praises of Rains. Bloody amazing coats, my best ever buy coat-wise.

Not fleecy/lined but that is a plus in my opinion. They are designed to be roomy so that you can fit whatever layers necessary underneath. I find it much easier as I layer it with fleeces/puffy jackets and can then wash the inner layers separately.
Can’t recommend them highly enough. And the hood stays up!!

Fiestafiesta · 01/10/2024 17:32

Ok I am going to spend the evening on the mountain warehouse, Rains and Ilse Jacobsen websites 🙂

The hood staying up is a MAJOR plus point

The landsend squall one?

They have a few good practical waterproof ones, not sure about nice but definitely not ugly.

EducatingArti · 01/10/2024 17:37

What about Landsend?

I have an amazing duvet coat from lululemon. The water kind of shrinks off it. Hood goes over my head and stays there. It's really long. Warm as can be. Great for the touchline. Slightly shaped, so you don't look totally like the Hungry Caterpillar at the end of the book.

Could it be called the wonder puff? My hood isn't removable but think it might be on this year's version. They do come up on ebay etc. Light but warm. Just brilliant for autumn and winter.

Fiestafiesta · 01/10/2024 17:41

The squall is a bit too short but I’ve just seen the Squall Stadium on the website which looks great

Helly Hansen Westport

I had 3 cheaper coats (Mountain Warehouse and Regatta!) that all leaked at the elbows or down the back. In the end I thought enough is enough and spent more on a good quality coat. Best coat I’ve had in years!

I did the Klarna thing and it was so worth it (although I swear it was cheaper in July!)

I have the North Face reign on parka

https://www.thenorthface.co.uk/en-gb/p/shop-all-829783/women-s-reign-on-parka-NF0A8BCJ?color=JK3

V big and light, plenty of space for jumpers, totally waterproof. Truly amazing double layered pockets, I had a paperback book inside today. I wear a baseball cap under the hood to stop rain getting on my glasses, and knot the hood under my chin! I'm so happy I bought it in the summer sale ☺️

I think some of the Rains jackets come with a little peaked hood which seems good too.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 01/10/2024 18:13

I've got a Barbour long coat and its been great in wet weather. It's lightly padded and can fit a jumper under for very cold days.

I have purchased what I believe to be the ultimate rain mac this week, from Sainsburies of all places. Below the knee, parka ish shape but good thick raincoat material, deep pockets, deep hood. £26!

Pigeonqueen · 01/10/2024 18:16

Dryrobe? I’m desperate for one of those. Not the most attractive of things but they’re very in at the moment. Asos and most outdoorsy places have dupes. Regatta had some on sale for about £60-80.

Fiestafiesta · 01/10/2024 18:18

I have a dry robe but I was looking for something a bit more shaped 😁 (it is unbelievably warm tho)

Look at Cotton Traders. They have several.

I know what you mean 😁 I love my plant hunter jacket from Seasalt for something a bit smarter.

2024intake · 01/10/2024 18:33

Sorry if it’s already been linked but maybe this is what you’ve been looking for??? You won’t be feeling the cold or rain in this!

GlumBear · 01/10/2024 18:34

Protected species coats are excellent

fruitpastille · 01/10/2024 18:35

I have a good one from Cotswolds. Looks like didriksons but cheaper.
