Nice waterproof coat with proper hood

Hello!

I am after a properly waterproof coat, knee length or below (I secretly love rugby coach duvet coats), with an actually functional large hood that will fit over headphones. Over the ear headphones that is. I do an awful lot of dog walking while listening to audiobooks! I would like to look stylish. Don’t mind spending a bit.

any ideas?

I got an amazing rubberised rain coat in the Netherlands on holiday. It's very waterproof and also somewhat stylish. I don't think they ship to the UK but this style is somewhat similar. https://tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/product/tuc144320450

@Fiestafiesta

Would one of the RainSisters coats be suitable?

Plant hunter by seasalt. I nearly died at spending the money but I must admit, I have been bone dry in the torrential downpours

I bought mine in the sale for £60, I love it and would happily spend full price on another.

Three years ago I bought a Mountain Warehouse knee length coat.
Never bought anything so uncool and useful before.
Black.
Padded.
Massive hood with detachable fur hood.
Pockets.
Zips up from bottom to top.

Sunday - 14 yr old on reluctant & unexpected drag to shops
Me - you can wear my coat - there's two in boot
Her - (zipping up MW massive coat and loving it) "huh".

Me today when flooded and can't get bin out before going to bus stop - "where's my massive coat?"

Meanwhile - indoors - other coats hanging lonely...
I never thought I'd be a MW sensible coat person.
Also me - I want a new one, this one had so much wear!!

I have two coats that I love for properly torrential rainy days. I have my Rainsisters raincoat which I like for work or for when I want to look/feel classy at the same time as staying dry. It is amazing and keeps me warm and dry in coastal north Scotland weather! My other coat is the Oodie Outdoor coat I got for Christmas last year. It's like wearing a massive blanket and so cosy and comfy. Waterproof and massive hood exactly like you'd expect a waterproof Oodie to be. It's less flattering than my Rainsisters coat but it's so fleecy inside which is a bonus when the snow arrives.

Ive had a Didrikson for years, it's been totally waterproof and I got a warm one for winter that is toasty. The hood turns into a snorkel that has worked in bllizzards and torrential storms. I'm debating getting another just for a change, but there's still plenty of wear in it. One of the best investments I've made, the only downside is the sleeves are a bit lomg on me, bit I'm short.

I have an Arc’teryx Patera parka (insulated) and a long waterproof from them that they don’t make anymore but do make similar. They last forever, are properly waterproof and warm. If you don’t mind spending a lot.

BlibBlabBlob · 02/10/2024 06:57

Very much recommend the coats on here: https://www.longcoats.co.uk/

Not cheap but extremely waterproof, and quite stylish if you buy a women's one. (I'm not stylish and am fairly tall, so bought a men's one instead... comes down to my ankles and people look at me like I'm weird when it's dry, but literally come up to me to ask where my coat was from when it's pouring with rain and I'm lovely and dry and they're soaking wet.)

You can buy fleeces etc to zip into them, or just wear something suitable underneath.

Hoods stay up!! Especially if you use the toggles when it's windy.

I live in my Oodie in winter so this is very tempting!

I have one from Boden. I've had it for a few years but they do it every year in different colours. It's properly waterproof and not too thick so I can wear it all year round. And I always get so many compliments on it as well.

WonderingAboutBabies · 02/10/2024 09:15

I have one from Joules. It's not exactly this one but very similar:

Buy Edinburgh Yellow Premium Waterproof Hooded Raincoat from the Joules online shop

Absolutely fantastic. Nothing underneath gets wet, hood stays up, dries super quickly when I'm back home, and I can wipe mud off well too. Has inside and outside pockets which is handy!

tog24 for waterproof jackets for me! I’m sure they do long ones but not 100%

Dontbeme · 02/10/2024 10:53

I got this one on sale in Next, 70 euro. It's the Regatta Orla Kiely Longline Waterproof Jacket, lovely and long, roomy fit so can layer underneath.

Nice waterproof coat with proper hood

I got a SeaSalt one earlier this year for walking the dog in. Waterproof, knee length, is fleece lined on the top half, big pockets and the hood stays up and I can see out of it. It was £155 which was a lot for a coat but it was well worth it. It washes well and dries surprisingly quickly too.

Hi Op so glad you asked this question as I am also looking for the same thing.
You've had some great responses and I just hope some of them do bigger sizes as that's what I need.
I was going to say a few of those which have been mentioned.
Plus someone mentioned Primark, and actually for a basic rain jacket some are quite nice.
I tried one in store it's lower thigh length, but it was in a cream colour and I find it hard to get my head around not wearing dark colours especially for outerwear.

The black one that was tagged looks good.

purser25 · 02/10/2024 11:15

Love my seasalt one. Janelle I think it is. Sensible length with part fur lining but not bulky and not heavy to wear but warm.

I can only say about my own recommendations but RainSisters definitely do up to a 3XL and offer petite and tall ranges too. The outdoor Oodie comes in S/M which was still big on me when I weighed 110kg, they also do a M/L version which is a standard 6XL (normal Oodie size)
Hope that helps Smile
