Nice waterproof coat with proper hood

Hello!

I am after a properly waterproof coat, knee length or below (I secretly love rugby coach duvet coats), with an actually functional large hood that will fit over headphones. Over the ear headphones that is. I do an awful lot of dog walking while listening to audiobooks! I would like to look stylish. Don’t mind spending a bit.

any ideas?

Sorry if it’s already been linked but maybe this is what you’ve been looking for??? You won’t be feeling the cold or rain in this!

This is 😂 hilarious.

I have the North Face reign on parka

https://www.thenorthface.co.uk/en-gb/p/shop-all-829783/women-s-reign-on-parka-NF0A8BCJ?color=JK3

V big and light, plenty of space for jumpers, totally waterproof. Truly amazing double layered pockets, I had a paperback book inside today. I wear a baseball cap under the hood to stop rain getting on my glasses, and knot the hood under my chin! I'm so happy I bought it in the summer sale ☺️

I think some of the Rains jackets come with a little peaked hood which seems good too.

This looks exactly what I want but I am worried about the only review being 1* and saying water came in the hood. Is yours ok?

I use an equidry coat for when I'm at the yard or watching my ddd ride. It's got a hood big enough to fit a helmet under and is mid calf length, warm and waterproof.

Lots of these types around, dry robe is another one.

Protected species. Expensive but beautiful and well designed. Mine is years old now and looks like new.

Properly waterproof not sweaty and even has waterproof pockets.

Midlifecareerchange · 01/10/2024 19:53

I love my Didrikson. It's got a great sized hood and big deep waterproof pockets

Jezzballs2000 · 01/10/2024 19:54

I have protected species and it's great. I just re waterproofed it with Nikwax in the washing machine and the water glides off it. Good for layering.

When I bought it there were loads of reviews so don't know what's happened to their website. Back then, most of the reviews were about size. I'm a size 10-12 and normally wear medium but I sized down to a small and can still wear a massive jumper underneath.

Bucketing down with rain today and I walked around for 30 mins in the thick of it, don't think i had any issues with the hood. I tightened the toggles around my face so just my eyes poked out above the collar!

Plant hunter by seasalt. I nearly died at spending the money but I must admit, I have been bone dry in the torrential downpours

grumpyoldeyeore · 01/10/2024 20:57

Rains have a 2 year guarantee which I have tested and had a refund when the material around the seams started to peel off after a year. It was exchanged for a new one without any problem.

Another vote for Protected Species. I lost one 4years ago when my brain was scrambled by chemo and bought another almost straight away ! I bought it in a different colour in the hope that my original would turn up but no such luck. But I still give people a side-eye in case I see it!

I’ve got the Lands End squall stadium and it’s hands down the best coat I’ve ever had - warm, completely waterproof, loads of pockets in sensible places, a proper hood that doesn’t blow down in the wind and comes in petite which I need and standard. I’ve walked the dog in the worst Scottish weather in it and it’s never let me down.

mitogoshigg · 01/10/2024 21:06

I have a warmer coat from craghoppers but it's not completely waterproof, it's better to layer in my experience

I have purchased what I believe to be the ultimate rain mac this week, from Sainsburies of all places. Below the knee, parka ish shape but good thick raincoat material, deep pockets, deep hood. £26!

Any chance you can post a link? Thank you

I've had this coat in a deep orange for about 6 months - I walk my dog a couple of hours a day, live in the rainy North West and I can confirm it's definitely waterproof.
I wanted a longer length fitted waist style as I'm tall, it ended to be lightweight as I get hot (it's cleverly vented at the back) with a decent hood and pockets. I didn't want it to look too much like a walking coat.
It fits the bill, looks great with jeans and trainers and is brilliantly function in all weathers.

Fiestafiesta · 01/10/2024 21:46

Thank you all so much. Really appreciate all the suggestions

Perfect! I see myself emerging like a butterfly out of it.

KirstenBlest · 01/10/2024 22:23

I'd also recommend getting a thinner one you can wear a fleece underneath it. You can then wear it most of the year.

LunaNorth · 01/10/2024 22:26

Another vote for Ilse Jacobson. I have a Protected Species one, too, which is good but a bit lighter and smarter.

For a good, sturdy, warm dog-walking coat that still has a bit of style and shape to it, Ilse Jacobson wins hands-down. It kept me dry in a torrential downpour yesterday.

AsCoolAsKimDeal · 01/10/2024 22:28

I've got a Rains puffa, it's wonderful - waterproof and warm but never gets sweaty.

I reckon you could get in a skateboard and sort of glide along like a dalek 😬

im after the same thing op. Done of them are so frumpy though. I want to look stylish as well as dry!

I needed one for my daughter- she often has to stand at the bus stop in the rain and I don't want her going to school damp.
We got a great one from Tog24- wind and water proof- not fleecy on the inside but she said because it's windproof, it's warm anyway.
