Honest thoughts on these shoes...?

LancsLass1 · 03/09/2024 18:34

I want some shoes for an upcoming holiday which will involve a lot of walking around cities, could be rainy at times, could be hot and sunny at other times (Autumn in Japan!)

I'm trying to take the smallest amount of clothes/ shoes possible, so I'm looking for something that's OK for walking in the day but also could be dressed up a bit going to restaurants at night (nowhere super posh).

I'm in my mid-30's. Are these stylish or are they terrible? I like the colour but really can't tell if they are more suitable for someone much older...

If you don't like them do you have any other suggestions that are good day-to-night shoes that can do for walking around and also restaurants?

Sorry, I don't like those. I'd go for some Nike air force/air max 1s I think. They can be worn in the evening also and would look cool. I wear mine with dresses and all sorts. But I'd try and find the space for some sandals also I think, so you have options.

These are very comfortable for walking around and I've worn them in the evening

I like the look of those but they have a touch of uwabaki (indoor school shoes) about them.

I'd buy some in Japan or try Shoezone for daps.

Those moon star are lovely. And cheaper than these Toast ones. https://www.toa.st/products/pras-canvas-pumps-black?utmsource=google&utmmmedium=cpc&utmcampaign=18437612051&gaddsource=1&gbraid=0AAAAADntuogBghBpiepcMflA36JEwcM04&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr7KdvdiniAMVm5FQBh2reg2sEAQYBCABEgKMafD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

The toast ones did remind me of gym shoes at primary.

KirstenBlest · 03/09/2024 22:19

I used to have some moonstars and they did offer some support. They were the lace-up ones. Moonstar Collaboration– Studio Nicholson

@ColourByNumbers88 Save yourself £105 +p &p by stopping by the supermarket Back to School section.

As a pp has said...get some sambas! Very stylish and so comfortable.

Thanks. I thought there must be a Japanese word to describe that style, useful to know.

SquashPenguin · 03/09/2024 23:04

They might be the ugliest shoes I've ever seen.

suki1964 · 03/09/2024 23:17

Sorry but I think they are minging, Im 60 and wouldnt be seen dead in them

However Im no style Guru so ignore me

What I do though is walk, Walk for ruddy miles, at least 30,000 steps a day on a city break so for me its proper walking shoes, Atm I wearing in a pair of merrels , waterproof, leather, these ones are a nice blue and dusky pink, light as a feather and so comfey

I would always wear my walking shoes for the flight and pack a pair of wearing out shoes for the evening. And a pair of sliders which double as slippers. Theres nothing as hateful as finding out your waterproof shoes are actually only shower proof and they are still wet in the morning ( I always reproof mine before a trip )

KirstenBlest · 03/09/2024 23:23

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle , I have a thing about footwear. Also about Japanese clothes.

For the trip, I'd take shoes you can walk all day in, ones that have been broken on. Something like Merrels or Skechers. I'd also pack something like flip flops/light sandals. Being me, I'd be buying stuff there too. Grin.

Quite! I am 51 and think they are hideous! I might wear them for trekking about during the day, but very doubtful. Certainly wouldnt wear them for an evening out!

MN's targeted advertising thought I might find this interesting.

The ugliest shoes in the world?

Thistooshallpass24 · 04/09/2024 00:12

The shoezone daps last year or the year before cost £2.50! They also carry a certain smell.
The shoes the op links are not available when I clicked, but would not be my first choice, they are not leather, they are neither plain nor stylish and I'm sure there are much nicer /better options out there !
They don't look like they tick any boxes, as they also don't look supportve

suki1964 · 04/09/2024 02:27

As for recommendations try here ( you can find them cheaper on other sites )

I live in a tourist area, Americans, Chinese, Japanese, French, Canadians and everyone in between. All wear good walking shoes - all day for some depending on their evening plans, comfy trousers or shorts, - with pockets, back packs or bumbags ( fanny packs ) and layers, usually a waterproof jacket which can be scrunched up and packed away

I also do city breaks throughout the UK and my go to is the same, be it York, Edinburgh or Liverpool, I want to be able to move and carry as little as possible

Only if we are planning to take in a good restaurant do we even bother changing for the evening meal. Usually we are so busy exploring we stop for an early dinner and are in bed by 9, ready to explore again the following day

Tourists are tourists, no one is judging you for what you are wearing. You are going to stick out like a sore thumb anyway so forget "style" try comfort and durability

And not only are those you have linked to imo opinion minging, there is sod all support and you will be wanting to call it quits by lunchtime cos your feet, legs and back are killing you

Thanks for the replies everyone. Sounds like the consensus is that the ones I was looking at are not very stylish! I did think as much but was trying to be practical 😅

Everyone has such different taste in trainers don't they? - I think some of the ones people have posted are nice, but others very ugly! - but thanks for all the suggestions.

I have just ordered some Nikes because I feel a bit overwhelmed by it and want a safe bet!😅

You'll find both walking and going out shoes at FitFlop.

MissedItByThisMuch · 04/09/2024 07:57

I was in Japan last autumn - don’t take “strappy sandals” as pp’s recommend, it will be too cold at night. Sneakers will be fine for going out, unless you’re going really upmarket, which you say you’re not. I’d take a second pair of trainers to give your feet a break though we walked miles and miles every day in Japan. I took a pair of white leather sneakers and a pair of trainers and they worked everywhere we wanted to go. My feet were pleased to alternate shoes after a long day of walking.

mondaytosunday · 04/09/2024 08:07

These are fine fir walking around but they look like those shoes you get at bowling centres - I can't see how you'd get away with them at night.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 04/09/2024 08:26

What a surprise it must be that even "someone much older" doesn't want to wear those nasty shoes.

I actually ordered those shoes and have sent them back - they were extremely comfortable, well fitting and supportive (unlike what some people seem to be saying).

I'm not sure why you've taken such offence at my comment about older people having a preference for practical and comfortable shoes. It's true and that is why places like M&S sell a lot of orthopaedic and comfortable shoes.

I didn't think they were as horrible as some people on here seem to suggest, I wouldn't have bought them if I thought they were awful.

Why bother asking if they were "they are more suitable for someone much older..."

It's irrelevant. It's typical casual ageism.
