Honest thoughts on these shoes...?

LancsLass1 · 03/09/2024 18:34

I want some shoes for an upcoming holiday which will involve a lot of walking around cities, could be rainy at times, could be hot and sunny at other times (Autumn in Japan!)

I'm trying to take the smallest amount of clothes/ shoes possible, so I'm looking for something that's OK for walking in the day but also could be dressed up a bit going to restaurants at night (nowhere super posh).

I'm in my mid-30's. Are these stylish or are they terrible? I like the colour but really can't tell if they are more suitable for someone much older...

If you don't like them do you have any other suggestions that are good day-to-night shoes that can do for walking around and also restaurants?

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle I love those moonstars but the size guide makes no sense to me - I’m a women’s size 3, what size would I actually need to order do you think? (Apologies for selfish post)

Will check when I get home. I'm a bog standard 37 or 37.5 but I think I had to size down.

@YellowphantGrey 'you can't refer to a pair of shoes as terrible and therefore more suited to older people'

Please can you point out where I said this?

What I asked (not stated), in two separate sentences, was 'Are these stylish or are they terrible? I like the colour but really can't tell if they are more suitable for someone much older...'

People are acting as if I started a thread saying 'look at these ugly-ass shoes, only people aged 60+ would like them, am I right??!'

'Are they terrible' was a question, not a statement. I asked 'are they stylish' in exactly the same vein. I clearly did not think they were 'terrible' when I was considering buying them - I was asking what others thought, because I know I'm not particularly up on fashion and I wanted to look good for my holiday.

There are constant posts on here about whether X fashion is suitable for X age, and a lot of those are ageist and problematic, so maybe people who are commenting on this topic should direct their frustration there at people who are actually being ageist rather than asking for opinions on a simple pair of shoes.

"It's that type of attitude that goes hand in hand with deciding that someone is too old to wear shorts or too old to have bare arms."

I attend drawing classes where we have models of all ages and celebrate and respect all bodies, and I am frankly a lot more open minded and body positive than the average person in the UK. Your comment about "deciding that someone is too old to wear shorts" is seriously misdirected. I regularly go wild swimming with friends in their 70's and 80's.

So yes, I maintain that you are projecting, misinterpreting and extrapolating, and also perhaps making assumptions about younger people and what/ how they think.

If people want to interpret a question about whether a pair of shoes are stylish/ not stylish/ would work well for me at my age, as me saying that all people aged 60+ wear terrible shoes, that's up to them, but it is clearly not what I meant and also not what I said. I wouldn't personally even put 60 year olds into the category of 'older people' - that's something that has been brought up by others on this thread.

Some people are just looking to be offended.

Thanks to those who have commented constructively.

Do you actually read what you write?

'Are these stylish or are they terrible? I like the colour but really can't tell if they are more suitable for someone much older'

Please tell me what shoes are more suitable for someone much older. Quite a few posters have liked the Japanese Moonstar shoes I posted. Are they suitable for someone much older [presumably much older than you]

In later posts you started talking about shops for older people- what are they?

Your posts on here have shown unthinking, casual ageism.

KirstenBlest · 04/09/2024 18:37

@pictoosh , what's an old lady? Do I need proof of date of birth to order anything?

I must be missing something because the 60 yr olds I know are buying their clothes from shops like COS, Me+Em, etc. Should I have a word?

pictoosh · 04/09/2024 18:56

If you like.

Remember, this is a casual chat forum.

KirstenBlest · 04/09/2024 19:07

That doesn't mean casual ageism is acceptable.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 04/09/2024 19:12
let it go GIF

Oh FFS - when it comes to the non-existent ageism...

KirstenBlest · 04/09/2024 19:19

The ageism is not non-existent. Several have mentioned it.

Will check when I get home. I'm a bog standard 37 or 37.5 but I think I had to size down.

The box says US4.5, UK 4, EUR37.5. So true to size to an average width UK 4

KateMiskin · 04/09/2024 19:31

Some of the alternatives suggested are hideous, in my opinion, with the usual caveat of "taste is subjective".

The Nikes will be better for walking, and inoffensive.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 04/09/2024 15:08

Don't take it to heart @LancsLass1 Some people on here just love nothing more than a squabble, and a good old pile-on. I see it on here every day. Having a poke at anything will do. With you it's non-existent ageism.

I think the shoes are fine! Smile Also, I find it hilarious that some posters have said they are minging and vile - and have then gone on to post pictures of some of the ugliest shoes and trainers I have ever seen! 😂 Leopard suede trainers, and ugly-ass black pumps. WTAF?!!!! 😆

And the Merrell ones are as ugly as fuck. 😖Bright orange and purple! My EYES!!! 😜

Enjoy your trip you lucky gal! And don't let the haters and beraters wear you down! 🤗

Oi - I love my merrells :) - take that back or Ill huff - says the old girl :)

Just goes to show, we all have different tastes. Now Im not adverse to the style of shoe in the OP, just the colour and, well I cant say for sure, they just didnt rock my boat and "minging" just popped into my head , but as someone else posted, Moda in Pelle do smilier and they are really quite nice , well actually some of those are minging as well :)

Precisely. We all have differing ideas and tastes, would be a boring world if we all liked the same. Myself I think the love shown to COS is totally unfathomable
tbh, never even heard of the brand till I came here ( MN) and I cant ever see me hot footing it into one

But Im old

Im now off to look at the Hotter shoes and maybe find myself a nice frock from BonMarche :)

LancsLass1 · 04/09/2024 08:36

I actually ordered those shoes and have sent them back - they were extremely comfortable, well fitting and supportive (unlike what some people seem to be saying).

I'm not sure why you've taken such offence at my comment about older people having a preference for practical and comfortable shoes. It's true and that is why places like M&S sell a lot of orthopaedic and comfortable shoes.

I didn't think they were as horrible as some people on here seem to suggest, I wouldn't have bought them if I thought they were awful.

Edited

I agree with you, I don’t think I wear horrible shoes but I’m in my 50s, I have a lot of problems with my feet, but I do go for comfort, even though I wouldn’t buy anything I thought was ugly! The shoes you linked to looked like Ecco ones I almost bought. Mind you I mainly wear fit flop trainers so I’m probably wildly untrendy as well . I just can’t wear the kind of fashion shoes I could when I was younger

HappyMe6 · 04/09/2024 22:14

Sorry I’m 67 and think they are awful I wouldn’t wear. But if you like them go for it

FluffBomb · 04/09/2024 22:17

head2toeinuniqlo · 04/09/2024 00:12

Sorry OP, they're awful. How about a nice pair of Air & Grace trainers? Super comfortable but look good with either casual or dressed up clothes.

https://airandgracelondon.com/collections/womens-luxury-sneakers

Totally agree awful looking shoes OP. Agree with head2toe some trainers with a thick sole to give some padding between the soles of your feet and the pavement.

Super comfy -

Oak89 · 04/09/2024 22:28

That is a hideous shoe right there.

NonsuchCastle · 05/09/2024 00:22

I think they're really nice. Great with a dress, shorts or trousers.

Garlictest · 05/09/2024 02:01

I'm just gonna barge in here on my 69-year-old, extremely dysfunctional feet 😂

I probably don't look like too much of a fashion disaster at the moment, bulky flat shoes being au courant, but am eyeing all those long, pointed toes with suspicion and resentfully noting the quiet reappearance of heels. As I now have "old lady feet" - increasingly misshapen and nearly always painful - comfy footwear will have to remain my choice. I shan't be taking Tramadol just to squeeze my arthritic toes into any season's latest.

Which is to say: OF COURSE there's such a thing as older women's shoes! OP didn't actually say they're ugly - and they aren't by this year's standards - but they certainly are flat and gnarly-looking. As are most older people's feet.

It isn't ageist to know that a lifetime's use causes wear & tear on the feet, for heaven's sake. And thin-skinned feet with swollen joints need roomy, well-cushioned shoes., which is why old ladies wear them.

As a side note to you Young Things who've only ever worn trainers, Crocs and DM's: if you carry on wearing those, your feet won't hurt like mine when you're old. I don't know why you'd suddenly want to switch to skyscraper Choos in your seventies but, if your ambitions lean that way, stick to 'old lady shoes' until you get there!

notatinydancer · 05/09/2024 02:30

I think they are horrible.
Take some nice trainers or converse and flat sandals.

ComeWineWithMeAgain · 05/09/2024 07:19

I work for a footwear company....ageism or not those shoes are in the catalogue aimed at the 50+ age bracket!

KirstenBlest · 05/09/2024 07:24

@Garlictest , I'm in my 50s and have been sensible with my feet all my life pretty much other than having worn court shoes for work. My feet are healthy and not gnarly. I've tended to wear lace ups with arch support, and continue to do so. I do not plan to wear ugly shoes. If for medical reasons, I have to then I will.

@notatinydancer ,There is no way I'd wear converse as they have no arch support and the newer chunkier soled ones just look wrong.

@ComeWineWithMeAgain , Do you have a link please? Grin

Blueballetpumps · 05/09/2024 08:11

They do look a bit like old lady shoes.

You could do better by getting trainers, like New Balance, Gola, Vega, which can all be worn with dresses in the evening or for loads of walking something by Merrell. Or slip in a tiny pair of slides or sandals for the evening.
