Ten, even five years ago Boden sold beautiful tweed jackets and skirts made from pure British wool milled in Yorkshire.

In 2024, to celebrate their British heritage, we have been treated to these garish, made in China horrors…

I can only assume Johnny Boden has recently watched The Producers and is trying to get rich by producing a business-ending flop.

That’s all.

Do you think they're over egging the cool Britannia thing to sell to naive Americans? I heard Boden is having a moment there with unsuspecting US influencers.

SuddenlyINeedToGoCauseIHaveAThing · 04/09/2024 21:39

Riffing on 90s/T2K nostalgia with a Cool Britannia theme?

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 04/09/2024 22:45

I don't have anything from Boden but the first one is dull. I like the second one.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/09/2024 22:48

@WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing ha, I thought the same- !!

The jacket looks like something they would have worn on a trading floor in the 80s. Why would anyone want to recreate that?

Take a look at what is in the shops atm. It looks like someone has found a warehouse full of clothes circa 1982 and decided to put eye watering price tags on stuff and sell it as the latest fashion

I actually like the jacket.

The jumper and dress etc are a bit too strange

The shoes I would wear if I was given them but I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy them

Probably totally outing but I am involved in talking to a (mainly) American and Canadian audience about Scotland - history, culture, tracing your roots here etc etc. I would totally buy this dress and wear it for work - very on brand!

https://www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/alba-check-maxi-dress-red-and-blue-check/sty-d1097-red?cat=C1_S2_G4

Expensive though - I have a BNWT one from the Pretty Dress Company (black watch tartan) which cost me £25 on Vinted.

I am not very keen on the high neck long sleeved look of dresses. It looks like someone has decided that showing a bit of an ankle or a wrist or any bit of skin save for head and hands is terribly risqué

The blazer is particularly nasty!
I remember when their clothes were good and the models were Johnny Boden's friends, DS's nursery teacher!

I just got round to watching the making of the final season. I miss that show so much! Dan and Eugene are hosting the Emmys this year. https://deadline.com/2024/09/emmys-2024-cohosts-dan-levy-eugene-levy-joke-eyebrows-first-promo-1236077247/

I'd much rather talk about SC than these hideous clothes so thanks for the laugh OP!

Emmys 2024 Co-Hosts Dan Levy & Eugene Levy Joke About Eyebrows In First Promo

Dan Levy and dad Eugene Levy are set as co-hosts of the 2024 Emmys, and in the first ABC promo, the duo joke about eyebrows.

The blazer is the worst. Hideous!

I don’t hate the shoes but wouldn’t buy them.

Pahahaha! The Ulster Protestants will love that for their 12th July celebrations 😂😂😂

A green Union Jack jumper? I can't see that being popular with either side of the debate. I live in ROI and have no bad feeling towards any creed or denomination but I honestly don't think I could wear that to a pub and not get grief. It's a Union Jack in Irish colours.

LoveSandbanks · 04/09/2024 19:11

Fucks sake, this would take some bravery to wear.

"Lochs, log files, castles… this tartan Alba dress is giving us all the Highland vibes. The soft cotton and long sleeves will keep you cosy when you need to look stylish on chilly evenings.
64% polyester 34% viscose 2% elastane"

Ahh yes the soft cotton known as polyester and viscose 🤢

StoneTheCrone · 05/09/2024 07:15

You see, if they'd wanted to do a nod to British heritage, they could have just done the collar or cuffs but no, they went all out and ruined it. Still, i do like them and their crisp, bright colours - makes a change from all the mustard and dark brown in the shops currently which, as a pale blue eyed blonde, I cant wear.

Dogstar78 · 05/09/2024 07:40

Think there is a buyer with their head on a chopping block somewhere in Boden HQ

LaSourciereEfrontee · 05/09/2024 07:45

According to the marketing email they just sent me, I bought my first Boden item 6205 days ago. I remember it well. A beautiful pure wool, lined skirt with appliqué flowers. It is still in my wardrobe and I sometimes still wear it. A world away from the current garish tat.

They probably shouldn’t have reminded me of that!

The green union jack jumper is a hate crime. Grin

Gunnersforthecup · 05/09/2024 10:34

I think that the tartan stuff would not look too good styled a la 80s Fergie.

However quite a lot of it would look good if worn with references to punk, pirate or biker boots, a corset under the blazer etc. Especially by young uns in their teens and twenties. Westwood tartans

Also, I can imagine Paula Yates wearing tartan kitten heels and looking very glam and rebellious with it.

This would again go down well with the socially-conservative American audiences. I probably won't buy it, but I did spend a long time looking for a tartan skirt/dress which was the middle ground between Britney Spears hardly cover your arse "schoolgirl" sexy mini skirt, and something the Dowager Countess of Grantham would have worn, in shades of sludgy green and brown.

Rubydoobydoobydoo · 05/09/2024 11:14

You can already see the green sweater pilling badly in the outdoor photo. Presume it's only been worn for a short while and already looking old.

Those shoes look like something I'd expect to see for sale in M&S for £35. Or £22.50 in Sainsbury's Tu range.

JaneJeffer · 03/09/2024 22:11

You just need some imagination to make it work.
Calm down Willie Wonka

Sorry to interrupt, but you know how people always post things like 'I spat my coffee out at that comment' when you know full well then probably just had a small giggle...well, I have to tell you I really did spit a mouthful of soup out at this. It went all over the table and my phone. I am still laughing now! 😁

BobbyBiscuits · 05/09/2024 15:48

All of those items are awful. Particularly the dress and heels. The concept of the union jack needs to be kind of worn in a punk, semi ironic style. Otherwise you'll look like either Geri Halliwell or a racist Farage enthusiast. 🤣

Wow, that's a high cotton ratio there. Wtf are they on? How can they get away with saying that? Isn't it like saying its a pure wool dress made from 100% polyester on the care label?

I think same buyer was off their nut on crystal meth' when they ordered this tat.
