Nivea cream

If any of you are also a fan of nivea cream in the white tub/tube.

The formulation has changed and its rubbish, the new ones say the formula is vegan, the old ones don’t. Where we are lots of shops still have old stock, so if you’re fan get some to tide you over. We’ve bought two blue pots instead of our usual one in case that formulation changes as well.

Has the classic Nivea been reformulated too? I got a 50ml tub from boots and it definitely feels different. Tried to take a pic of the ingredients: Aquo, Coprylic/Copric Triglyceride, Hydrogenated Rapeseed Oil, Glycerin, Brassica Campestris Seed Oil, Helianthas Annuus Hybrid Oil, Diisostearoyl Polyglyceryl-3 Dimer Dilinoleate, Butyrospermum Parkii Oil, Hydrogenated Coco-Glycerides, Panthenel, Lecithin, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Cetyl Polmitate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Octyldodecanol, Hydrogensted Castor Oil, Pantolactone, Magnesium Sulfote, Citric Acid, Sodium Anisate, Phenoxyethanol, Limonene, Geroniol, Linalool, Hydroxycitronelal, Citronelol, Benzyl Alcohol, Cinnamyl Alcohol, Citrol, Parfum.

Is this different to the original formula?

Is this the blue Creme?

It does seem different to the version I have. I believe the one made in USA is slightly different though.

I'll try take photos of mine.

Tube made in Poland although seems the same as the tin made in Germany.

Argh just ordered one off Amazon - it is the vegan formula.Confused

Yellowgold · 21/09/2024 16:49

@isthismylifenow mine is made in Germany but there is no mineral oil and the texture is fluffier

WrinklesShminkles · 21/09/2024 17:05

The blue one has had lanolin in it up til now.

Nivea should really learn from Glossier's volte face on changing their lip balm to a vegan formula. In what way is lanolin not "sustainable"?

Argh. So this has been changed too 🙈

And there doesn't seem to be any change to the packaging for this one so not easy to spot.

Now I will have to go scout for a stockpile of the blue version too by the sounds of things.

Grr I'm so irritated now.

Would you mind to take a photo of your tub/tube of your new blue one. Maybe there is some small change that we can pick up so we can give the new one a wide berth.

I thought it was only the Soft that had lanolin removed. Seems they have butchered the whole range now.

halava · 21/09/2024 17:49

Follow the money, I doubt these changes mean more costs for the producers, quite the opposite, I think it is a cost saving exercise dressed up with a few signals of virtue. The cost of lanolin and other original ingredients has probably gone up!

It would make you into a climate change denier at this stage. They are all latching on to that to save money somehow.

I managed to get a big stash from Amazon before the guillotine came down, thanks to the heads up from the OP. But I'm bloody raging just the same.

fao · 21/09/2024 17:49

I've just ordered 6 Nivea Soft from Amazon. The photo shows the tub without the vegan logo so I'm hoping it's 6 tubs of the original good stuff.

ImDuranDuran · 21/09/2024 17:59

I've never used the stuff but was so intrigued by this thread I had to invest Grin

Sainsbury’s had a mixture of both options yesterday - the smaller 'tube' seemed to be the vegan option with the tubs I'm guessing in their original format (no green vegan text on the lid).

It was just over £5 for 500ml.

My lovely mum is visiting us, she landed this morning, hand luggage and a checked bag, her checked bag was full of nivea soft, so sorry to the people of Gloucestershire who haven’t been able to find any!

Top mum action there!

There is no visible distinction on the tub itself. Just noticed the texture change and peeled off the sticker at bottom to look at ingredients. Here is a pic:

This year, the formula of our NIVEA Soft has been evolved/sustainably improved and now contains 95% naturally derived ingredients and is 98% biodegradable. In addition, our formula is produced with 100% electricity from renewable sources.
Thanks to the new formula the carbon footprint of NIVEA Soft is significantly reduced:

  • At least 40% CO2 emissions reduction related to our ingredients, compared to our previous formula.
  • At least 20% CO2 emissions reduction at total product level.
The NIVEA Soft is now also 100% climate neutralized.

@halava
These all sound like very good reasons for changing the formula. Good to see big brands trying to do something.
And I like Nivea soft but it's not that special. It's just a moisturiser.
There are plenty of similar creams on the market that do the same job.
If you don't like the changes then just shop around a bit.

Nivea soft is the only moisturiser I can use that doesn’t lead to an eczema flare up or hives.

Like @Simonjt i too suffer with excema and it took me a long time to find a product that doesn't break me out, and is reasonable in price range.

So now people have to start from scratch to find a product that they have used for years which fitted the bill.

It's not that special to you so doesn't affect you in the same way. It can take a lot of time and money to find that one product that works.

I think it's cost cutting wrapped up into fancy wording.

NippyCrab · 22/09/2024 08:54

@Branster I loved Anne French and we all used it in house, my Mum also used Endocil cream and I would sneak some of that when I was little.
I don't use Nivea Soft often but I've always got a tub handy, I love the hand cream so I will stock up on that.

TeaAndCakeFTW · 22/09/2024 09:10

Ffs. What can I use in place of blue nivea?

Aydel · 22/09/2024 09:17

I haven’t been able to find the non vegan Nivea soft anywhere. ☹️

napody · 22/09/2024 09:20

murasaki · 02/09/2024 23:44

For the eczema sufferers, astra is ok, or was, I don't know if they've changed that too. Not as good, but OK.

Frankly the vegans can do one and leave the basic stuff to those of us that have less choice. I'm sure there are a load of poncy vegan brands out there for them to feel superior about.

To be fair, I imagine it was because it was a good excuse for nivea to make it out of far cheaper ingredients and look virtuous for doing it. See also 'vegan leather' (plastic). Very much doubt it was because of pressure from actual vegans.

Edit: just saw their update above. There's nothing to stop them still moving to 100% renewable energy (great!) but sticking with the old ingredients.

Yellowgold · 22/09/2024 11:37

The biggest challenge is these were budget creams and I think in order to make up for the rising costs they had to cut costs somewhere. So obviously that's part of drive too. Also going vegan etc gives them a marketing opportunity. It's all over the internet now and going by this thread we have all been buying more.

The ingredients and it says made in Germany

I am now back after being out for a breakfast with my dad. As I mentioned upthread we went on a little jaunt together previously to find some stock of old version Soft. So I had to mention your post @Yellowgold which got him intruiged as well.

This looks like the Greek version you have here, possibly made in Amsterdam?

I went back to the pharmacy that only had new stock in last time, to inspect the blue Creme versions as well. The ingredients haven't changed, but it does have a green label mentioning the new tin. So they are also new stock.

But, there are no original Nivea Creme in tubs. They are only in tubes and the tins in 3 sizes. There is a blue tub, and only says Nivea on the lid. No mention of Creme. And not in the same section as Creme.

So I am not sure what is going on. Perhaps the tub is a new formula and here not being sold as Creme. But the tins, although the packaging is stated as new and not a noticeable change, seems to be the original one.

The tins are made in Germany. The tubes are made in Poland, but I can't see where the tubs are made as they have that sticker underneath which I couldn't remove as I wasn't buying it.

So my conclusions are...get the tin/tube and not the tub.

If anyone else would also like to go on a Nivea mission and are in a store, perhaps we can compare notes across countries 😃
