What's wrong with side strioe trousers?!

Isometimeswonder · 28/08/2024 21:15

Just seen on another thread that trousers with side stripes are no longer OK?!
Why?!
(Although I will still wear my Next ones, as they're new. And I like them!)
Nb... this is semi lightheaded, but still a real question.

I think they're just quite ubiquitous these days; those M&S ones from a couple of years ago were everywhere. Nothing wrong with them though!

Do you not know what "trousers with a side stripe" look like?

Grandmasswagbag · 28/08/2024 21:31

I don't think they were ever ok tbh. I put them in the same category as those tops with the weird shoulder openings or skorts. They are a weird phenomenon that seems to pop up every now and again but I really don't think they've ever been particularly fashionable, practical, classic or tasteful. Sorry! I'm fairly into fashion and big into clothes and I've never once been tempted by a pair.

EVHead · 28/08/2024 21:34

I’m a bit obsessed with them! I have several pairs and I think they’re dead smart - FFS wear what you like!

Timeforicecream · 28/08/2024 22:32

Eh, no I still see lots of people wearing them. In fact I’ve just remembered I have 2 pairs that I’ve forgot about.

I think they are one of these things which have morphed into a standard.

No @PonyPatter44 I do not. Unless you're meaning Adidas or cheap knock off alternatives because that's what I see when you say trousers with a side stripe.

Like a lot of trends that were super popular at one point they’ve dated now it’s a couple of years later .

They aren't from a couple of years ago though. I have a pair of old TopShop ones (sadly no longer fit) that are at least ten years old.

Re being dated. IMO they were different. Thirty something year old me thought they looked quite cool at the time.

Roll on nine years and similar trousers are in sale in M&S where over 50% of their consumers are age over fifty. Thirty something year old me would never have shopped in M&S so the once cool trousers are seen as something that older people wear and think they look cool. They have been ruined simply by being worn by older people. FWIW almost fifty year old me likes trousers with a side stripe although I don't think they still look cool.

Lemonlily · 29/08/2024 03:48

My 70year old mil wears them.

moonfacebaby · 29/08/2024 04:05

If you like them, just wear them and sod if they are still seen as cool anymore.

The fashion industry is set up to make you buy loads of clothes in pursuit of being “current” & this excessive consumerism is really bad on so many levels.

Fashion is weird, a look will come out but there’s certain times that different age groups will find it fashionable. I’m older and not drawn to the emerging trends that teens and 20 somethings wear, but I will wear it a couple of years down the track once it has been pared back and comes out in a low key older woman’s label.
Theres some inexplicable length of time that needs to pass before something that’s in fashion translates into a style feature.

Nuggetnuggety · 29/08/2024 06:19

Haven’t they had a resurgence because Adidas trousers have been very popular for a bit?

bergamotorange · 29/08/2024 06:34

If you like them, carry on wearing them.

Just seen on another thread that trousers with side stripes are no longer OK?! Being influenced in this way is nonsense. They're your legs.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 29/08/2024 07:14

I didn't buy them when they were everywhere a couple of years ago, because they seem quite limiting. Now you have 2 colours you have to think about when choosing the rest of your outfit, instead of one. I prefer the same relaxed wide leg style in a plain colour.

JMAngel1 · 29/08/2024 07:14

I still see lots around - I never liked them for myself - I find that the stripe makes everyone look wider as it highlights the outline of hips and legs - especially if the trouser is darker with a lighter stripe. It just doesn’t make sense.
Also they invariably come with a jogger style elastic waist which looks good on no one when it puckers out and doesn’t hold stomachs in.

DefyingGravitas · 29/08/2024 07:21

Love the multiple suggestions that older people render clothes unstylish 😏

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 29/08/2024 07:25

Couple of years ago they were everywhere - so now look a bit dated. It doesn’t matter if one shop was doing them 10 years ago, they were a neutral thing then but once the style became a popular fashion, they hit the fashion trend cycle, so now look dated because they didn’t become popular enough to become a staple.

maybe pack them away for a couple of years and then bring them back out when it’s far enough from the trend to be neither fashionable or unfashionable.

RampantIvy · 29/08/2024 07:25

I have never liked them. They just make someone look like a hotel bellboy or doorman.

I know, was thinking the same.Think the whole point is today, has opposed to different eras, women of any age can where what they like, mix it up a bit.

Nagatha · 29/08/2024 07:31

Well that is annoying because I saw a woman in the swimming pool changing room yesterday who looked great in hers. She was a similar size and shape to me and I thought maybe I can try some too, I’m always useless at finding nice looking but comfortable trousers.
Now I feel like I’ll be pointed at in the streets and mocked for my side stripes. The shame.

Thursdaygirl · 29/08/2024 07:31

I will still be wearing mine!

NotRocketSalad · 29/08/2024 07:35

I've never bought any because I thought the side stripe would just go grey in the washing. But it people have been wearing them for years I must be overthinking.

Needsomethingtoread · 29/08/2024 07:36

I still wear mine, comfy but smart (ish) for work. I’m petite and they look nice on my body shape. I’m all for what looks good on me now rather than follow trends that look shite!
