Please find me a modern, comfy pair of trousers that I can wear to college with trainers

I'm going for relaxed but stylish- Toasty/Hush etc vibes. I'm a size 14 and 5.8. I'm also a really lazy online shopper.

I need them for college (I'm 58 but doing a masters), so don't want to look too 'smart'. Extra points for an elasticated waist!!

Purely out of curiosity, @Prenelope , are you using the term ‘college’ for purposes of anonymity? Or is your master’s course actually at a college?

(My first degree was at a university composed of colleges; professional qualification, and decades later postgrad both at places with the word ‘School’ in their title. The next thing might possibly be at another ‘School’.)

Of the trousers I own, I think the ones that best fit the bill and that are still available for sale are Combats from Community Clothing (which has already been mentioned).

I've also got a couple from Toast - one pair are elasticated at the back and also have belt loops so only your closest, most intimate friends need ever know. Had them both 7 or 8 years and they're still going strong although I'm not sure if they're as well made now.

I'm not sure if you've already started your course but, in case you haven't, I'll add that I too did a Masters in my 50s and my lovely fellow students mostly dressed like crap so, while it's a great opportunity to reinvent yourself if you want to, I wouldn't stress too much about it.

Also I now want those YMC Deadbeat trousers and I'm very drawn to that George skirt.

Another vote here for Uniqlo

I have these in black and grey (although the black faded more quickly than I'd have liked)

Following.....I want some similar for a long haul flight.....ideally elasticated / draw string waist, no sticky in bits and nothing that looks too much like pyjamas! Might have to brave the uniglo shop to look at those flannel ones linked above.

I'm using it partly for anonymity and partly because my dcs call it mum's college in a piss taking way (but kindly - they are proud!). It's at a university.

Some of you evidently didn’t do your postgrad studies in your fifties at places where the majority of the half your age cohort were quite erm … public facing, and looked exquisite every day. HmmGrin

Absolutely no one at my institution was in comfy leggings or pyjama like apparel …

No, it's not a corporate type degree.

Just jumping on (sorry OP) but I'm getting confused with the size guides on Uniqlo.. would a 14 be size L with the wide fit trousers?

I'm a 12 (not a skinny 12) and always buy medium at Uniqlo. If that helps.

Nor was mine, @Prenelope! Very much Arts based.

Actually @Floisme ’s post has reminded me that I spent a good deal of my MA year on emergency dashes to my mother’s house to borrow things from her wardrobe. I just never seemed to have enough clothes, so her Toast / Cos things (and some rather nice bags and jewellery) saved me from nakedness. Pretty sure people complimented me on borrowed outfits more than on my own clothes.

SingingSands · 27/08/2024 16:59

I have these in navy and black and wear to work regularly with trainers.

If you like Toast, then be sure to look at Celtic & Co. Gorgeous sustainable clothes from natural fabrics - linens, wools etc, but v on trend.

Skigal86 · 27/08/2024 19:02

I’m a bit obsessed with the Hollister livvy trousers, the wide leg high waist ones. They are smart at the front and have an elasticated back and come in a lot of different colours. River island also do a similar style in loads of colours too.

D20 · 27/08/2024 19:14

Lucy and Yak heavy cotton Alexa’s. Often on offer in their eBay page but size down! I’m an M&S 10-12 and fit comfortably in size XS. Non iron if they’ve gone through the dryer too.

Talking of M&S I tried some of their jersey ones on recently and I was not impressed by the fabric or colour so you might want to do a feel test first. I am however currently wearing their harem trousers which are super soft and comfy.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/08/2024 22:57

Plumo are great for this type of thing

Redrosesandsunsets · 28/08/2024 04:42

Try the Cider app or just google and look up “Cider high waist solid pleated wide leg trousers”. They have them in many colors and are nice. Great fit !

These are what you need! At £17.50 they’re an absolute bargain. They are SO comfy and easy to wash. They very regularly restock if your size/colour isn’t available. I’m 5’8” and a 12 and I need a tall.

They also have a straight leg version that I wear to work from home.

Edited

I had these and they shrank in length in the wash. I would buy some more but in a longer length that I need to allow for shrinkage. There are several comments in the reviews complaining about shrinkage as well.

I tried a large pair of Uniqlo trousers recently. I'm a 14 bottom and they were a perfect fit but sadly, they were too short. If they don't offer various leg lengths on their website you can forget about their trousers if you need anything over a 30 inch inside leg measurement.

I have found the same, sadly

I have these H&M wide leg trousers in black, navy and grey and wear them to work lots with trainers. They are super comfy as the waistband is elasticated inside. Looks like a normal waistband on the outside. They wash great too.

I have some lovely trousers from Tu. I was quite smug when I saw them on a fashion editor in The Times.
