I'm going for relaxed but stylish- Toasty/Hush etc vibes. I'm a size 14 and 5.8. I'm also a really lazy online shopper.

I need them for college (I'm 58 but doing a masters), so don't want to look too 'smart'. Extra points for an elasticated waist!!

Might be a bit late to the party here, but there's an online shop called Halara that sells some lovely trousers. I've got 3 pairs in different colours. They do come up a bit small on the waist so I'd advise sizing up.

I often wear nice, silky pyjamas as smart casual - silky, pretty, trainers or heels! And elastic waist of course! X

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 02/09/2024 11:38

Honestly just wear what you usually wear, if you start dressing in something new you'll be so uncomfortable and self conscious.

Some of these trousers look dreadful and remind me of just stop oil/XR camps. Never knew Swampy was fashionable.

Just wanted to say how smart yet fun and approachable the dark blue jeans, jumper scarf and nice trainers combo is. So so versatile too. Literally wear the jeans daily and just switch up the jumpers/scarves. Has s young, friendly vibe too which might be nice.

Luck and Yak Addisons. I live in them.

Thankfully no clothing snobbery at the art college where I study - anything goes. I love my petrol blue velvet side stripe trousers.
Most of us buy pre-loved especially after seeing films of the waste from the fashion industry.
Any second hand clothing agencies near you, OP? Or try Vinted maybe?
Most of the students at college are pretty hard up - cost of living - and college heating is limited (where I am anyway) so we all tend to dress for warmth and comfort!

Laurmolonlabe · 07/09/2024 19:30

I bought mine at Baukjen- quite an eco brand but good quality and sensibily priced.

No one is snobby in my class either.

In the end I wore a pair of Toast wide denims and a black batwing top. My big black glasses and bright lipstick. All good!

Tu at Sainsbury's have a wide range of wearable, preppy trousers. I've just bought some cord cargo trousers, I'll post a photo separately of another pair that currently have in.
Unless you have to have a " label" I think Tu clothes are well made, and often on trend.

Sounds good, @Prenelope - but surely you’ll be stepping over the college threshold more than once?

Ireolu · 07/09/2024 21:54

Lucy and yak alexas. 100% cotton. Elasticated waist and comfy.

I have these in navy and black and wear to work regularly with trainers.

These are the best most flattering trousers I think I’ve ever bought. Tried them on on a whim when I was uniform shopping and was amazed how good they look.

Can be dressed up or down and I wear them with trainers boots and sandals.

I got a few pairs from Matalan the other day!

Cider wide leg trousers with pockets are brilliant - wash easily, stretchy elasticated waist is really comfy, pockets are ridiculously (and wonderfully!) deep, lots of colours and long (even on my sister who is 5ft 11, when she tried mine on). Oh and they are cheap too!
plus they do that thing of if you want to send them back because they don’t fit, they offer the option that you can keep donate to someone/something worthwhile and get a credit note to spend instead…

I have several colours and my sister has 2 pairs too!

Shop Cider wide leg elasticated waist comfy trousers with pockets

they have assorted other stuff that looks good too, but I haven’t needed so haven’t bought, like fun cardigans and other trousers…

I really like these:

Hang well, and wash and iron up well, elasticated waist by flat waistband. Five different lengths available so no alterations needed. I am 5’6” with a 31” inside leg and the standard length fits me perfectly. I own multiple pairs in all four colours and wear them extensively for work. Very comfy. They’ve restocked at least once, so if your size is out of stock, get them to email you when it’s back in.

https://www.busbyandfox.com/collections/bottoms- good selection of styles, just got a pair of Lolly jersey ones - very comfy and can look casual or smarter depending on how you choose to style them

They are dreadful to deal with if you want to return/send back. I ordered a super striped cotton pair but a size too small. I found out to my cost that they are sent from China and you have to return them there at your own cost. Avoid unless you ate certain of your size.

Teenagehorrorbag · 08/09/2024 20:53

Agree with Saint and Sofia - currently wearing a smart but comfy slightly flared black 'jersey' pair, with an elasticated waist......😊
