M&S wide leg trousers

Keep seeing things about wide leg trousers are the way forward, ditch skinnies, straight etc, especially over 50. The M&S ones are heavily promoted on here as well.

Ordered a pair of on line, had to wait as they were out of stock. Picked them up today.

I look like I’m wearing a pair of flares from the 70s! They are very unflattering, there’s a lot of material. I don’t know if it’s because I’m tall but they look awful.

Think I’ll go back to straight leg jeans thank you very much. So much for fashion!

I bought some wide leg jeans on line and had to return them they looked ridiculous. Not sure if it's because I don't really have a waist and narrow hips so there was far too much material around the hips and crotch and bum.
So back to skinnies I went. A bit gutted though, I fancied the change. Maybe we just need to find the right pair OP?

Garlickest · 23/07/2024 04:28

I love my flappy-legged trousers. I am also tall(ish) and with no discernible waist.

But I hated skinny legs. I just owned no trousers for ten years, covering my legs as necessary with leggings or yoga pants. The yoga pants had flappy ankles.

I guess if you're used to parsnip-shaped legs, wide trousers will look and feel funny. Lucky for you, there are still plenty of parsnip pants in the shops!

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 23/07/2024 04:33

Oh I'm not sure about jersey, that would cling in the wrong places and show all the lumps and bumps wouldn't it?

I like the Uniqlo wide leg pants. Depends how tall you are though, I'm 5'11 and wish they were a little longer.

You need to wear wide legs with a fairly fitted top and keep your waist defined, a complete about face from how you probably wear skinnies.

MiddleParking · 23/07/2024 05:16

I love a wide leg trouser but those M+S things are cursed objects. I am really skinny, not many things could make me look chunky, but those trousers (the side stripe version) managed it. They also added 40-50 years onto me.

tribalmango · 23/07/2024 06:13

I've got those very ones. Am tall and slim and think I look ok. I wear with tucked in top or boxy sweater.

tribalmango · 23/07/2024 06:21

Normally wear trainers, this was an event.

You have to get your head round it!

I have M&S wide leg pleated ones for work which I love and I have just bought a linen pair. I'm 5'7 so not short and slim and I have finally got used to them!

Bjorkdidit · 23/07/2024 07:12

It appears that these days you're not supposed to care about how unflattering and awful they make you look, you still wear them Confused

They also need to look like they're far too long, or just a little bit too short. You know like when you were a teenager and most shops didn't do trousers quite long enough for you so all your trousers were half an inch or so shorter than they were supposed to be? That's the look now.

soupfiend · 23/07/2024 07:16

I love wide leg trousers but Ive learned that they have to be cut right, fall right and in the right material to be flattering otherwise they look enormous, make you look enormous and dowdy

I have no waist, no hips and no bum, so I need trousers which are able to fall right, not have lots of material, not bunch up on my tummy flab

I steer clear of elasticated waists

Ive found that only one pair of wide legs in Marks is any good, they are sort of denim 'lyocell' material.

Sainsburys is where I found the best ones, blue pinstripe and plain black, they make me look like I have a waist, skim over my bum without too much material.

startstopengine · 23/07/2024 07:48

Im 5'2 and they look stupid on me too, make me look dumpy and wider than I am.

RaininSummer · 23/07/2024 07:51

Parsnip pants.. i love that. I cant cope with wide legged jeans either but have have embraced widish summer floaty trousers this year.

gardenmusic · 23/07/2024 07:53

If only I could find parallel leg trousers! Accidentally bought some once. Same width all the way down, wide-ish but not flappy. Full length. Very flattering.

Channellingsophistication · 23/07/2024 07:56

I’ve got the M&S wide ones at £27.50 they have in navy or black. I think they look quite smart and really easy to wear for work

ilovesushi · 23/07/2024 09:30

I am a wide leg trouser convert. I did love my skinnies and still wear them for dog walks but I have a pair of wide leg jeans from uniqlo which I love and some linen trousers from Next. I tried the linen trousers from M&S but I found them quite narrow on the thigh ironically so sent them back. They were perfect elswhere so didn't want to size up. I think the black jersey ones risk making the wearer look like they are doing a jazz dance class in the 1990s.

BestIsWest · 23/07/2024 09:42

The M&S jersey ones I bought recently have gone in the charity bag. Every time I washed them they shrank a bit more until they were flapping round my calves.

I also fell victim to the side stripe ones which are still in the wardrobe. Every time I try them on I think ‘nope’.

I do have a linen pair which are not too bad.

Chichestermoo · 23/07/2024 09:56

The original M&S wide leg trousers were great. I bought six pairs! The fabric was like a good wool crepe which draped beautifully, and the cut was not too voluminous, and you could machine wash them. And although the waistbands were elasticated; they were tailored nicely somehow and didn’t bunch.

The latest designs have used a different inferior fabric, with more of a synthetic feel to it, and they don’t hang or wash as well. A shame!

Over71 · 23/07/2024 10:22

I wore "loon pants" - I've got the pics to prove it.
They were not a good look then & nothing's changed IMO.

Rebootnecessary · 23/07/2024 11:13

I'm quite short at 5'3" but I love wide leg trousers. I have quite wide shoulders and they balance me out more. Skinnies are awful on me.

I have these from M&S and I like they way they hang.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/07/2024 11:14

Always thought wide legs only hang properly on tall, thin people.

Crumpleton · 23/07/2024 11:18

I like these one's, I've a few pairs and they've lasted years.

I'm only 5' 2 and they do 3 different leg lengths so pretty much a fit for most.

henlake7 · 23/07/2024 12:35

I would love a pair of trousers that looked like 70s flares! I think wide legged and flares trousers are pretty easy to wear and style. Just keep the top half cropped and fitted and you're golden.

Skinnies I just cant deal with though. I have one pair and they have never made it out the wardrobe yet! What do you do with them? It just feels like you are supposed to chuck a big shlumpy layer on your top half and go....

I dont do jersey trousers though. I have a couple of pairs that are for indoors/lounge wear but I spent at least a decade wearing nothing but the same 2 pairs of size 22 black jersey trousers. Now Ive lost the weight Im not going back!!LOL😃

Edited

They just look like trousers to me. I mean, they're not skinnies, but they're not particularly wide leg. That's not to say they don't look good just that they look like regular trousers.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/07/2024 13:08

Too many of these trousers only look good on 5’ 10”, size 8 models.

It’s the cropped wide leg ones I dislike most - I don’t think they even look good on the 5’ 10” models.
