M&S wide leg trousers

Keep seeing things about wide leg trousers are the way forward, ditch skinnies, straight etc, especially over 50. The M&S ones are heavily promoted on here as well.

Ordered a pair of on line, had to wait as they were out of stock. Picked them up today.

I look like I’m wearing a pair of flares from the 70s! They are very unflattering, there’s a lot of material. I don’t know if it’s because I’m tall but they look awful.

Think I’ll go back to straight leg jeans thank you very much. So much for fashion!

Too many of these trousers only look good on 5’ 10”, size 8 models.

It’s the cropped wide leg ones I dislike most - I don’t think they even look good on the 5’ 10” models.

I think the cropped ones look good on younger women. I just look like I got trousers that were too short!

annieloulou · 23/07/2024 16:51

I don’t really wear skinnies, more straight leg. I’m 5 ft 9 with 33 inch legs and thought the wide leg ones would suit me but sadly not.

I like the comment about looking like you are doing a jazz class! Unfortunately now Ican’t unsee that 😂 .

Saw someone in work today wearing a pair with trainers and a long sleeved t shirt, which looked nice. Might try them on again before I return.

I love mine. I wear them for work with trainers or DM shoes and a uniform polo shirt, and out of work as every day trousers. I’ve dressed them up for interviews and dog walked in them. So comfortable. Mine have washed really well and hang well, they haven’t stretched or shrunk.

I’m 5ft5 and a size 10 with wobbly bits which these hide.

edit to add, I also got some thicker black ones with a black side stripe and a front seam, still M&S, which faded quickly

The original M&S wide leg trousers were great. I bought six pairs! The fabric was like a good wool crepe which draped beautifully, and the cut was not too voluminous, and you could machine wash them. And although the waistbands were elasticated; they were tailored nicely somehow and didn’t bunch.

The latest designs have used a different inferior fabric, with more of a synthetic feel to it, and they don’t hang or wash as well. A shame!

Yes! I managed to buy them on EBAY for a while but now down to the last faded pair. The "new" design that the OP bought are horrible thick, sweaty fabric which is too hot for summer and they just fit and hang wrong. The old ones were perfect and so useful but I cannot find anything similar.

I've got those very ones. Am tall and slim and think I look ok. I wear with tucked in top or boxy sweater.

Tall and slim can wear anything and look good!

I'd catch my other foot on wide legged trousers, come a cropper and go flying.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/07/2024 20:40

I've lived in those ones for the last couple of years, had to size down , I love them!

PrimalLass · 23/07/2024 20:42

I can't wear wide legs again all.

LadyChilli · 23/07/2024 20:48

I bought the caramel coloured ones with the white side stripe and quite love them, but haven't worn them out yet. I think they look really stylish with a long sleeved t-shirt and trainers, or a pale blue sleeveless polo neck, but the first review I read was from someone who said they were really comfortable for after their hip operation and that has given me pause 😂 I still love them though.

I have persevered with wide legs because they are very comfortable.

I have little waist and big bum and thigh so really have to work to find the right cut. Anything that falls from the waist or hip is useless but if they follow the curve to mid thigh they look really flattering.

You do have to try a million to find the right ones though. I tend to wear a relaxed boot cut quite often which is easier to find.

greengreyblue · 23/07/2024 22:50

I have lots . Been wearing them for last few years. Love them! I wear them long and with platform trainers or Birkenstock style sandals with linen/ summer ones.

tillyandmilly · 23/07/2024 23:40

I love the cropped wide legs jeans - I am tallish but have short legs and a long torso - they suit my shape and are very flattering !

swearymad · 23/07/2024 23:42

I'm 57 and bought M&S wide leg jeans at the weekend. I'm 5' 3" and size 16. I love them! I have a feeling that I might look back on photos from this time and wonder what I was thinking. But right now, I feel good in them and that's all that matters.

Cantonet · 24/07/2024 07:56

I'm 5ft 3 and strangely wide trousers look good on. As someone said earlier they balance out my broad shoulders & flow nicely. Recent purchases have been these denim pleated & a navy crepe pair from M&S. Also H&M have the best linen mix trousers with a pleat down the front.

Next wide leg linens are good at £24. Just wish they had a side zip and flatter front as the zip and tie string bulge a little so tend to wear looser tops with them.

Andy Murray had hip operations. He's only in his 30s.

Just saying

Anonymous54 · 28/07/2024 07:43

I like the concept of wide legged but feel they were really made for the taller customer!
i would aim for a brand which does petite maybe?
On another note why is everything high waisted now? I spent the 90’s and naughties in drop waisted trousers and jeans and they are much more comfortable for women with bellies!

greengreyblue · 28/07/2024 08:07

I’m 5ft 5 and wear them. Two DDs are 5ft 3 and 5ft 4 and wear them. I think they look great. You must balance out with a more fitted top though.

greengreyblue · 28/07/2024 08:08

By drop waisted do you mean low rise? They just cause muffin fop.

Clingfilm · 28/07/2024 08:23

I had 2 of those m+s ones, the waistband overlock frayed inside so the elastic waistband went haywire AND they bobbled! I'd hardly worn them.

Though I feel 'larger' in the wide legged trousers I do feel odd in skinnies these days and it's quite nice swishing around in wide legs. and they remind me of my youth

greengreyblue · 28/07/2024 08:35

I do think they look best if you’re slim(ish) They need to go wide from a narrower point otherwise the silhouette is much wider.

Leafytrees · 28/07/2024 08:36

They definitely take getting used to and styling, especially when you first make the jump from skinnies.

As others have said, keep the waist defined and try different tops. I'm very short (not even 5ft) so anything oversized or larger on top swamps me. I wear high waisted wide legs with fitted tops to balance things out and they make my legs look super long, which doesn't happen very often.

Do persevere though as the right pair and outfit will look great and then suddenly your skinny jeans will look and feel like sausage casings.

Packetofcrispsplease · 28/07/2024 09:54

I’m 5’2” and usually a size 10 .
I got 3 pairs of wide leg linen trousers in 3 different colours from Landsend in the short length which are a 29” inside leg (the straight and slim trousers for petites are shorter than that )
I really like them but have had them for 2 years and when I wanted to find more pairs of them they looked like ridiculous flappy clown 🤡 trousers on me 😩 like they changed the cut of them completely.
Now looking for more of a parallel leg cut which I cannot easily find .

Underlig · 28/07/2024 10:01

I love wide-leg trousers. I think they are really comfy to wear and flattering. I have loads. I was wearing them long before they got trendy.

Remember palazzo pants in the late 80s?
