I need a killer dress for day/night

Maximusdecimus · 30/06/2024 08:12

I’m a size 16, I’m going to a day thing that will go on into the night. Party vibes. I’m 49 so it’s a group going out for a 50th.

Budget is up to £150.

I carry my weight on my stomach so sometimes that goes into an 18 dependent on how hormonal I am.

Im going with a bunch of women where I constantly feel judged. I can’t not go. So need some help! It’s in October. Help!

Not keen on it and it's not day to night but I suppose it depends on what impresses the people you're trying to impress.

Of the suggestions on this thread, these are the dresses which would impress me and have me asking "where did you get that dress?" There was also a nice long green dress but it was an evening only dress.

If I had to pick one probably number 6 or 7, although would happily wear all of them. Although I love the sleeves on 3; 2 would move beautifully and the pattern on 4 is so unusual. Like MotherofGorgons super clingy, shiny dresses don't do much for me.

I thought you might like this! Hurry, because it might sell out quick! www.pinkboutique.co.uk/products/cocktail-chic-teal-stretch-long-sleeve-plunge-ruched-midi-dress

I have this but in black. I'm a 16/18 with big boobs & tummy. I brought a plunge bra to go with it. It's SO flattering!! It's not a plunging as it lol a on the pic. Thick and stretchy. Seriously worth trying xx

This also nice

CornishIrish · 28/07/2024 21:22

Never Fully Dressed is great at 16/18 but I’d also start following some accounts that are the same style/size on IG as I always find that’s an easier way to see how things are on and you get a good jump on styles.

Please don’t go if they are really are judgy though. You don’t need to go anywhere or do anything that makes you miserable

Surely that Cos dress has been posted as a joke!

My thoughts exactly!

I like it. Order it, try it on and see how it feels, hopefully you feel fabulous in it. It’s a lot better and more special than some of the other over priced shapeless suggestions I’m seeing here

Bigcat25 · 29/07/2024 22:29

I like it, seems easy to style. You could were it with or without dark tights.

GoldFrame · 30/07/2024 04:22

I think that’s lovely @Maximusdecimus

I think these threads are difficult when you don’t have a sense of the OPs normal taste… these suggestions very much vary in style. I personally struggle to see some of these being worn in daytime - and some of them look very try hard. I guess it comes down to interpretation of “ killer dress”

MotherofGorgons · 30/07/2024 08:45

I guess we all have different tastes and OP is happy with her pick. But in case useful for anyone else, I love this, though I don't usually love satin ( too shiny but this is not ).https://www.massimodutti.com/gb/satin-midi-dress-with-cowl-neckline-l06699199?tduid=a462b58581e74283572d5a746d7923d2&utm_s

Wow, whatta dress 🔥

Onelifeonly · 31/07/2024 16:44

I hope this thread has given you some ideas OP. They seem to veer from overtly glam to mumsy to downright weird. Many don't even look good on the model in my opinion and some have 'the dress is wearing you' vibes which can never work.

If it's not till October, I'd see if I could try on as many dresses as possible between now and then. I'd be unlikely to buy a dress online unless it was one that was a similar design / style to one I already had, so I be going shopping the old fashioned way but you could do some serial ordering instead.

Basically you should forget about being judged by others and start looking at yourself as if you were an independent observer. What flatters YOUR body, height, weight, colouring etc? What styles, colours, fabrics work well on YOU?

If you find something that truly suits you, you will feel great and sod what anyone else thinks, family or not.

It might help more to post pix of YOU wearing dresses (anonymously, of course) as that would be easier for MN to give their opinions on.
