I'm trying to make a few changes to keep looking current; I thought it might be helpful for others to add theirs too. I have found it's very easy to suddenly take a look around and find that things have moved on without me noticing 😁, especially as I'm working with ever increasing younger colleagues.

Disclaimer- these are just observations, I am not saying they are all correct or that anyone has to do them.

  • wide leg trousers instead of slim/skinny for work
  • flat shoes for work
  • sports socks instead of trainer socks
  • less eyeshadow

In all my years on mn I don’t think I have ever been on a s&b thread where these three things a have not been said:

  1. oh god just wear what you want, slavishly following fashion is pathetic
  2. everything looks better on slim people
  3. only buy a few quality pieces not high street stuff

and there, just as I was really enjoying the thread, with good natured discussion about socks and 90s fashion, all three of those crosses on my bingo card are ticked off 🙄

Cliche, but being kind is (also) always on trend 🙂

Thankyou for the necklace tangling link. I had given up on the layering of necklaces because of the tangling so might give another go.

To person who asked about oversized top and bottom I never do both. A lot of the cargo trousers I have bought are still quite fitted around the bum. I find the paper bag style does not work for my mum tum.
Also I am liking sporty leggings as a replacement for skinny jeans when you are wearing something quite baggy on top. Have bought a load of “My Protein” leggings in colours like khaki and wearing them a lot.

Another sock thing - I have bought in different lengths and much shorter crew socks for if wearing a skirt and trainers so not halfway up the calf but still see the top of the sock.

suburburban · 08/06/2024 07:33

I'm more concerned if things are made of cotton or linen than being fast fashion tbh so I'm quite

Maising · 08/06/2024 07:34

Fashion has been followed and evolved since time began, it's nothing new to follow the changes. It's why we don't still wear ra-ra skirts and blue eyeshadow to go to parties.

Some people care, some people don't and that's all fine. No need for judgements, I don't think anyone is aiming to look like a teenager. I won't be going out today in bum enhancing leggings, crop top, sports socks pulled up and carrying a Stanley cup don't worry.

Thanks to all the contributors, it's been a really interesting read.

..... particular when buying tops.

WhatNext24 · 08/06/2024 07:39

I have ditched all my heels, pencil skirts and opaque tights that I had for work in pre-pandemic times. I now own one pair of heels and all my other shoes are flats, including more trainers and chunky flats than I had before.

Blazers are now loose fit and trousers are either wide leg or tailored and cropped at the ankle (for workwear). Tops are also loose fitting.

I wasn't aware of the sports sock thing but no way will I be adopting that. It's like the worst of the 90s back to haunt us. The chunky-soled loafers are bad enough, I don't need to go all the way back to Year 9.

This made me laugh. My work gave me a Stanley cup as a gift and I discreetly left it on my desk for someone who cares to help themselves to it.

Not a problem for me. I wear very thin ones you can barely see that are similar colour to my hair. It just does a perfect job of pulling my hair back abit and making it look nicer without me having to faff around with styling products.

TBH though after spending my 20s, 30s and 40s living in leggings and baggy t shirts because I was hugely obese and miserable I refuse to now limit my options to 'age appropriate' and 'suitable' clothing.
I lost too many years thinking that everything looked crap on me so now I plan to experiment and play around with my style.

IMO some of the most stylish and iconic older women are the ones who dont follow fashion slavishly but have their own unique style.

@henlake7 where do you get these hairbands from? I have never seen something like this but they sounds nice.

I am not.

Fast fashion is a contributor to climate change. In general I think many things called fashion are someone playing a practical joke.

Nailed it.

VoteHappy · 08/06/2024 07:49

What I meant it the young are embracing the " be yourself" but also not GAF about how "big do I look in this"
Bums are bums

Time to stop the body shaming of women

I adore clothes, am very concerned about fabric cut etc
I love checking out style but not fashion
I have absolutely zero intention of emulating 18 year olds
I know what suits me and it isn't white socks pulled up😆
The socks pulled up over leggings is a runners thing btw
Running tights with calf length compression socks has been my style for years

LoobyDoop2 · 08/06/2024 07:51

I am interested in this as so far I’ve held off wearing slouchy blazers with wide leg jeans, and stuck to the straight cropped jeans that were everywhere before wide leg took over. I do wear wide legs with oversized shirts, though. Am I right?

Previousreligion · 08/06/2024 07:59

I have worn wide leg, no eyeshadow and flat shoes for 20 years. Who knew I was trendy!.

I will never ever go for the long white sports sock thing. All the young people here wear them with sliders and it just looks awful on everyone. I don't want my attention drawn to anyone's smelly socks!

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/06/2024 08:04

I love a straight or wide leg jean and have always worn flat shoes so feel pretty much on trend at the moment!

Mr Monkey, a runner, always wears sports socks pulled up to just below the calf with shorts. I'll have have to tell him he's on trend.

Me, I hate socks full stop and am always barefoot in sandals as soon as the weather allows.

I have used leather, cross body, satchel type handbags since I was 20 in the early 2000s (when I first started using "proper" handbags) and you'll have to take them from my cold dead hands. Nothing else comes close in terms of practicality for big city living.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/06/2024 08:06

@LoobyDoop2 i find I have to wear something more fitted on top when I wear wide trousers / jeans or I just feel like I’m wearing my dad’s suit that’s much too big for me. I’m not sure I could pull off wide leg + slouchy blazer even though I fully love both of those things separately. I might give it a try.

@Maising i outraged my sister recently by wearing gym leggings (to the gym I might add) with a sweatshirt that didn’t fully cover my bum. She could not compute it as a look. I think she’s still on the leggings and tunic Top vibe. They were not bum scrunch leggings. Nor was it a crop top 😬

Apologies, has someone linked to a necklace gadget that stops layered necklaces tangling? If so could someone re-post; I've scrolled twice and not seen it....

creekpassage · 08/06/2024 08:36

Oooh bloody hell, if they work, that’s JUST what I need. Thank you!

Scissorsisters · 08/06/2024 08:38

Easiest way is to get a young person to advise.

My DD will either pull a face and says No Mother! or will steal the piece Wink.

Spangler · 08/06/2024 08:41

What trainers are you wearing that look good with the wide jeans? I can’t work it out.

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/06/2024 08:58

I think they need a bigger trainer than skinny jeans. I generally wear HOKA Gaviotas.

I do also wear Superga pumps, but tend to keep those to my straighter leg "boyfriend" type jeans.

TheOGCCL · 08/06/2024 08:59

I think fashion is moving very slowly these days, the same things for 2-3 years at least: neutrals, minimalism, oversized, baggier bottom half/slimmer top half, trainers, chunky gold jewellery (now just moving into silver). Out: pattern, skinnies, baggy top half/slimmer bottom half, anything too neat, twee or fitted.

Small tweaks make a big difference and tend to have some longevity. For example that Uniqlo bag has been about for years now.

Barney16 · 08/06/2024 09:02

Wide leg jeans. Flat shoes or Doc Martens. Oversize blazer, very long skirts or dresses, although my summer dresses have had no wear at all because it keeps raining. Little tops tucked in. Although again, due to weather have spent weeks throwing big winter cardigans over my carefully planned outfits 😕

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 08/06/2024 09:07

Ok am far too short to do loose fitting top and bottom - so I’ve gone wide leg with tight fitting top that’s tucked in to show my waist band, baggy blazer needs to be worn fitted bottom half or I’ll drown in material.

updates - stopped doing as much eyeshadow - I’m just putting a slick of a creamy colour over the whole lid, no longer doing the whole thing of dark colour in the crease, lighter in the lid and blending. I read a thing about eyeshadow that if you do still want to do colour, but one over the lid, with nothing above the crease for a more modern look, but I can’t carry that off so it’s just looking eyeshadow free for me.

i noticed how thin all the eyebrows were at the Met gala, so I presume over the next year or so the last of the dying out slug brows will disappear! Brows seemed lighter in colour as well (compared to photos of the same celebs a couple of years ago).

I really really struggle with visible socks with trainers. I only feel I can comfortably do this when I’m wearing gym leggings and sporty trainers, looking like I’m just being practical.
