Fat girl summer - let's slay 💅

So, for those of us who are chunky yet funky, what's the plan ladies?

Shall we give no fucks and wear nice comfy summery clothes or do we worry about keeping every inch of us covered head to toe in black until we sweat so hard we melt? What's the plan?

Currently a size 20/22 myself, unlikely to get down to a magical size 14 by July so I'm looking at the nice comfy looking linen pants, few maxi dresses, shorts because I'm a wee chubby pale rebel and to really go wild a jumpsuit or two.

Simply be has some lovely things at the moment including shoes, asos curve is looking alright and vinted is my best pal.

I'm 35 for a few more months and don't want to have another summer in my 30s hating my body, so this year I'm going to embrace it. Anyone with me?

I LOVE this thread!! OP, thank you for posting it...everyone else, thank you for all the lovely links and ideas. I was reading through some it last week, and had been trawling clothing ideas for the upcoming holiday I'm taking the kids on. I'm completely out of touch with what suits me as I used to be so slim before I had kids (so could wear anything), then managed to maintain a 10/12. In the past 5/6years, the ex walked, peri has hit me hard and I'm now a lot bigger than before (and have lost my confidence). All my old clothes don't fit.

On the back of this thread, I bought a pair of shorts the other day (I haven't worn shorts since my 20's), because fuck it...I want to be able to enjoy the summer too. They've got the built in cycle shorts underneath (stops the chub rub) but they're fab and comfy and I wore them to town (!) on Saturday when the weather was nice (I've not had the confidence to wear anything short in years). Also bought some colourful dresses/skirts :)

I'm addressing the peri stuff etc, but that's for another thread! Thank you so much for this thread :D

Where were those shorts from, they sound great.

Thanks for all the swimwear recommendations. Loving the Snag ones but they only have Sizes 4-6 left! I'll look out for new stock. @GoingDownDown there are loads I like on the Bloomchic website. Have you had anything from there shipped to the UK and if so, did you have to pay custom duty? Nothing on their website about returns. Do you know if you can return items?

GoingDownDown · 24/05/2024 11:14

@wondabar no import charges if your order is under £135 total. I haven’t returned anything to them, but I checked their policy first - you get one free return postage label per order.

If you do order from Landsend I find with their swimwear it's best to go up a size.

The only problem with this thread is I want to buy everything!!!!!! Thanks everyone, I think all the nice people found their way to here.......

Somethingsnappy · 24/05/2024 19:28

I've just ordered the Manners Asri dress! I was drooling over the new leopard print one, and trying to think if it was too early to ask for it for a Christmas present, and then dh had a look and said he'd buy it for me. We can't/shouldn't really afford it, but he put it on the credit card. He's very much in my good books at the moment!

After putting my details in, the website recommended a size M, but now I'm a little worried it'll be too small as a pp up thread ordered the size L, and she is about the same size as me (16/18). I hope it's OK.

Chewbecca · 24/05/2024 19:51

That was me! I ordered L on their recommendation after putting my details in too so we must be different in other ways!

Chewbecca · 24/05/2024 19:51

And if I am honest, I haven't fitted into a 16 top for some time 🤣

Ah, thank you for answering me! I'm more a 16 on top, and sometimes 18 on the bottom, so perhaps that'll be OK, as there's plenty of material on the lower half of the dress! You said the dress would prob still fit you even if you lost or gained weight, didn't you? So perhaps the stretch just works that way. Do you feel it holds you in at all in the tummy area? That is my dearest hope for this dress!

RobinEllacotStrike · 24/05/2024 20:42

I'm wearing my purple Manners Asri today, with a back & white striped cardie & chunky plastic crystal necklace. Great outfit & no bra!

Sounds fabulous! Any chance of a photo with the head chopped off?

Chewbecca · 24/05/2024 21:09

Definitely holds my tummy solidly and I think the sizing is forgiving.

I am loving this thread. I need to find jeans with stretch in them. Fat face have changed the style of the ones I've worn for years!

I'm a size 22/20. Huge tummy and the rest is proportionally smaller. Any suggestions welcome.

These are fab. Comfy with a bit of stretch. All good I bought two pairs.

ChristmasLightsLover · 24/05/2024 22:55

Thank you @FriendofDorothy - I wore the Brooke bootleg for years and loved them. The style changed last autumn and I've been wearing what I had somewhat carefully!

I like the look of that wide leg. Will try them.

Are there any other brands to look at? Open to trying new things...

Wilfrida1 · 25/05/2024 07:28

Twisted Wunder is my go to for frocks that make me feel fabulous! And very reasonably priced, too.

I have a twisted wunder dress, it's a wrap dress and the quality is beautiful! I think it was about £13 from asos!

My Asri is going back - I am weird about material and I didn’t like how it felt. Lovely quality tho. I’m a small 20, ordered the large as that’s all they had left in the black and it fitted fine, could have gone up a size but equally if I’d liked I would have happily work that size.

poorremus · 25/05/2024 10:26

Thanks to this thread, I bought the H&M cropped linen trousers that recommended early on. They are so comfy! I get the brown/orangey ones and I'm off to get another pair in a different colour today. I've also tucked in the tee-shirt Smile

I'm a size 16 but that would be a generous 16 or maybe 18 on the bottom half. I got size L and they are just right.

poorremus · 25/05/2024 10:29

Oops - sorry, they are not linen but 'a soft viscose weave' apparently. Anyway - they are v. comfy.

TiberiusFlam · 25/05/2024 11:29

@poorremus i think that was my reco!
Ive got three pairs now and never take them off

Lwrenn · 25/05/2024 11:39

I can't go back and find the poster who was asking about family comments but I just showed, just this minute showed my dp this dress and he said I'd look lovely in that. My mum has popped over to see the kids and heard us so asked to see it, I showed her, she pulled a face and asked did I think if I'd look like a wetherspoons plate.

Well I fucking do now, damnit Janet.

I'm going to buy it now and wear it out of sheer spite. 💅

(It's from boohoo if anyone else fancies looking like tablewear with me!)

Purchases starting to arrive 😁

This is from Global Mandala. I love it! Needs a slip under (I have a couple of theirs, dark ones I might skip the slip but light ones are too see through for my preference).

I think I’m going to do a wardrobe clear out this weekend. Put away (or maybe stick a blanket over) everything which doesn’t quite fit or suit me. Have everything fabulous up front and centre.

I like it! That’s a cute neckline.

One of my friends once likened my floral dress to his grandmothers curtains. I assured him she was clearly a woman of refined taste.
