So not for the first time I saw someone today wearing something I also own..
A dress
One of my favourites
Cool, comfortable and classic I thought- a summer staple
But they looked awful in it

I have come home and put it in the charity bag. I can't unsee it! But now feel a terrible judgey person but can't get over it.

Is anyone else also this loathsome?

I've done similar in store, admiring an item then an older woman picks it up and I'm out of there!

Dear god, imagine wearing the same clothes as an older woman. The absolute horror.

ChristmasGutPunch · 11/05/2024 18:35

I once binned a coat because Keith vaz's wife was in the papers looking awful in the same one

DeadbeatYoda · 11/05/2024 18:37

Urgh, I saw a fat person in the same garment I have and now I have to burn it.
How pleasant you are

As an older woman can I apologise for wearing clothes?

My mother dresses better than I do and she's 35 years older than me! Age is a bad metric for fashion sense

I bought a new shirt from Sainsbury's, then saw Tractor Porn MP's wife wearing it for a newspaper interview she did with her husband. It looked so fr**py on her (plus it now makes me think of Tractor Porn MP everytime I see it) so I only wear that shirt for gardening now.

I remember back in the 1990s I had a blouse and then Pat Butcher wore it in Eastenders 👀👀 then I had an M and s cost that Yasmin in corrie wore!!! Both to charity shop 😂

Thinkle · 11/05/2024 19:02

This happened to me the other way round. The big boss at work and I wore the same top one day. She never wore it again.
It doesn’t both me, I don’t think you are being horrible either OP. My issue is that if I haven’t worn an outfit for a season and I remember it fondly, I somehow don’t like it the next season. Nothing has changed, I’m the same size and 2% older. I’m fickle and I’m fine with that.

This made me cackle!

OP- you arent loathsome at all but I am wondering why you threw it away when someone with a completely different figure was wearing it? It's pretty obvious that certain styles of clothes suit different figures and what may look amazing on one person looks awful on another. I'm also 5'10" and midi dresses look ridiculous on me because I am tall so they end up looking a really bizarre length on me, they do however look lovely on other people

Wow. You realise you’re dismissing your future self here. There are incredibly stylish women of all ages.

That’s me. I’m the older woman. In fact I’m going to make a point of picking up more dresses near younger women now 🤣

Yeah, you aren’t loathsome at all. There is a lot of hyperbole on mumsnet. It’s exhausting 😉

Ineedaholidayyyy · 11/05/2024 19:14

I can relate. I bought a gorgeous summer dress last year, I'm in my 30s. Took it on holiday and felt great it in. A couple of weeks later I saw my partners auntie who is in her 70s wearing the same dress whilst she was on holiday! It put me off wearing it for the rest of the summer, even though it looked better and more age appropriate on me (without sounding too mean). I've still got it though, I couldn't bare getting rid of it as I spent a lot of money on it, and it's a really lovely dress. I'll just make sure I never wear it whilst with my partners family!

NetZeroZealot · 11/05/2024 19:15

Yup. I've done that. Not straight in the charity bag but it's put me off wearing somehting again, so that's where it end sup eventually.

Are there any threads left on MN where we're allowed to admit that we'd rather not look or dress older than our years?

Used to love this topic but am so bored by the faux 'what are you talking about about, aging is brilliant and I can't wait to be stylishly old' posts.

Darklane · 11/05/2024 19:18

God forbid any woman should get old? Happen you’d rather we were all put down on our fortieth birthday.

My dad still has the jumper Frank was wearing in the massive photo Janine had up in the car lot. We giggled every time it came on.

Of course you're allowed to admit it, just like we're allowed to remind you that you can't catch old age from clothes.

WeAreAllMadeOfStarz · 11/05/2024 20:01

No, but you can easily look older (or younger, maybe?) by the clothes you choose, and I'm not sure I've ever met a person desperate to look older. Seems like some sort of shibboleth on MN though.

Grendell · 11/05/2024 20:10

I won't even buy yoga pants because of all the women (all ages) I have seen wearing them and apparently they have no idea the fabric is too thin and I can clearly see their bum.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 11/05/2024 20:10

Not exactly, but I returned a dress I loved because the cut looked awful on me. I later saw a woman with a completely different body type wearing it, and she looked awful too 😂 It was the dress' fault!

CorpusInterruptus · 11/05/2024 20:15

Borka · 11/05/2024 18:05

Oh no, not an older woman.

Oh yes, the very worst thing is an older woman (men are fine though)! I think it’s catching so people shouldn’t stand close.

Are there any threads left where it’s ok to question the stereotype? If we stop questioning it then it’s worse.

Callipygion · 11/05/2024 20:27

About 2 years (or could even be 3!) I was on a bus looking out the window when I saw a woman standing outside her house wearing my new dress. It looked dreadful on her and I pushed my dress to the back of my wardrobe and never wore it - until today! Pulled it out, put it on and thought it didn’t look so bad after all!

Funnily enough I had a couple of blouses I used to wear to work which two other members of staff had too (one different one each). I never saw them in theirs again after I wore mine 🤣🤣

MN casual ageism strikes again.

WeAreAllMadeOfStarz · 11/05/2024 20:30

Go back six months @CorpusInterruptus and this was rarely mentioned, now every thread is a sea of people wanting their wee badges polished and handed a balloon for claiming they'd be as good as thrilled to be taken for 10/20 years older than they are.

It's totally laughable and false!
