15hr flight

Off on a very long flight soon. I'd like to find something comfortable to wear. Any suggestions. I can go into my nearest city tk browse but would rather find something online. I was thinking some sort of tracksuit type thing but can't find anything suitable- I don't want to look like sporty spice!! But equally lounge wear searches produced sets that are basically pjs.

@PointerParty

yep, I don't get the concern about the change of temperature at all. I get off the plane, into the car and then shower and change asap. Yes I'd take off my hoodie when I landed in Sydney in December but that's the extent of it.

Oh I see the "real travellers" are speaking.

It really isn't a big deal to take a layer off or add a layer. You're not going to expire if this isn't done the second you step off the plane. There's no need for being so precious

Well there is, if you step out of the plane and it’s 48 degrees and even if there is a taxi waiting you still sweat and need to attend a business meeting minutes later. Different realities.

Does Singapore count? Kuala Lumpur? How about Santo Domingo? Maybe I’m unusual but I just take off a layer until I can get washed and properly changed

True, I’ve never stepped straight off an international flight into a meeting. Would not be wearing joggers and a hoodie in that scenario.

I bet OP had no idea this thread would take the turns it has when she asked for advice!

Isometimeswonder · 18/03/2024 23:14

@thesleepyhoglet just be comfortable.
I wear loose trousers, stretchy waist. A vest with long sleeve shirt over. (A thin jumper in my bag too). Can layer up or de-layer as necessary.

Socks and slip on skecher trainers for the flight.
I keep flip flops in my bag if it's hot on arrival.

Travellingislife · 19/03/2024 05:38

This thread has been entertaining 😆 Some
good ideas about outfits too, thank you.
I travel a lot, for work and private, long and short haul and I wear leggings, merino T-shirt, trainers and a hoodie. I feel like a teenager though. Soon I’ll travel a lot with colleagues and I feel like I’ll need to look a bit more put together. I asked about this on an old thread and got some great ideas about a more business like travel look but that’s not applicable here.

I’ve been to HK/Singapore/KL countless times, as well as Australia as we go there most Christmas holidays, and never dress for the other end. I stick a tshirt in my carry on to change into at the end of the flight, and a shower and proper change happens at the hotel/accommodation. All this angst about dressing for the destination weather whilst on the plane is... strange.

Twilightstarbright · 19/03/2024 08:34

Another thing I’d recommend is the sketchers slip on trainers. I wear them as my sightseeing trainers but being slip on is great for planes if you are inclined to remove your shoes on the plane.

Orangello · 19/03/2024 08:50

It's of course fine if you get straight into taxi and are in your hotel half an hour later. But if you go straight to some remote island in tropics, meaning taxi-bus-ferry-speedboat etc hours of travel and waiting, I also wouldn't want to do it in thick joggers.

That’s a fairly niche scenario. The bulk of the travelling public isn’t trying to get to the Perhentian Islands the moment they disembark. They’re wondering where the MTR is, or where the taxi rank is, or where the car hire desk is.

So you DO consider the destination weather and change into something accordingly. Your assertion that it's strange when you do it yourself is....strange

Yes there will be a sea plane at the end of it!

Sweaty Betty Garys, thick socks as my feet get cold, cashmere cardigan, slides for walking to loo.

Exactly the same!! I also have a cashmere wrap in case I get cold (treat to myself!)!

CactusPeach · 19/03/2024 16:36

Layers! Doesn't have to be a cardigan can be hooded sweatshirt and vest top underneath.

Plane temp can vary as well as the temps at departure and destination country.

I have some cheap jeans from Missguided that I wear to work that I wore on a 13 hour flight last year and was comfortable. They are thin for denim but also warm enough and also stretchy enough to do lunges so comfort wasn't an issue.

I never take anything like a cashmere wrap. I take a wrap that I can wash in a machine. Planes are fairly filthy. Things end up on the floor or just mashed into the corners of the seats.

Find a travel wrap. He that is slightly stretchy so it grips onto you and you can wash it properly after the flight.

@corkystclair

or pants, some kind of 'harem' pant or jogger in a bamboo/drapey knit fabric, grey or black good for gross plane spills. Leggings if they're not that compressive, and are super stretchy and more cottony than swimsuity. You need a cuddle fleece/sherpa jumper (and this is crucial) with a hood, as this becomes your blanky (rather than plane blankets which may or may not get washed each time) and allows you to sleep, and the hood encloses you and you forget that it's the plane. If this is black it looks like streetwear rather than pjs.'

do you have any brands that you recommend for either the pants or the fleece/hoodie please?

Noise cancelling head phones are essentially and I couldn't recommend highly enough Bose (the ear muffs not the ear buds). They are expensive but REALLY worth it. It's a life investment and they come with an airplane adaptor. They are great to wear even if you aren't listening to anything as they shut out the noise of the plane engine which one you notice it is actually superloud.

Totally second what you say about headphones. Mine are just lindy but they're great. I don't have very specific recommendations re hoody and leggings -- the hoody was just from Amazon I'm afraid. I like pink lotus leggings but i'm not sure they exist any more! :)

Good Lord. Thank goodness I fly business where most of that stuff is either not required (footrest) or given to you
You must need a massive bag

we the people must develop our techniques ;)

These threads always bring out the

"I'm an experienced world traveller - unlike you tourists on a package holiday"

responses.

Didn't mean to come across like that. Was just trying to share advice. The first time i flew I had a horrible time and now I know little tricks to make it easier -- just wanted to share those with others. Didn't mean to offend.

I fly cattle truck class and I don't need that either.

I have to work on the plane and my industry doesn't do business class: just trying to share what helps me have a good time and get things done.

You didn’t offend. Your post one was easiest the best one on this thread. I also travel a lot, and it’s the little things that makes a difference for comfort. My dh used to travel A LOT, and his head is full of tricks that only a very frequent flyer would think of. 😅

thesleepyhoglet · 20/03/2024 20:19

Update- a little visit to Tesco and I now have a long loose black dress with short sleeves, mostly cotton, a soft fleecy hoody (possibly from the pj area of the store!) and some flight socks with dinosaur print. I will definitely be wearing knickers the entire time although may wear leggings which I slip off. Many thanks to all his contributed- it has been an entertaining read.
