Have M&S sizes unofficially changed?!

Or have I put on loads of weight! Bought a size 14 jeggins recently without trying them on and I literally had to chisel them off just now after finally wearing them. I already have several pairs in the same size which seem bigger than the new pair…

I buy cheap trousers for work in Mand S. I have bought several pairs in the same size (allegedly) and they vary in length by a couple of inches. It vexes me enormously as I used to just order them online but now I have to go I to the shop and measure each individual pair.

TooManyTabs · 03/03/2024 12:46

Tops seem fine but I've bought trousers that were too small in my usual size, whereas I could usually rely on M and S sizing to be generous before.

YouDidntEvenAskIfSheWasThereMoriarty · 03/03/2024 12:49

Their clothes were ridiculously big so I hope so.

BeachBeerBbq · 03/03/2024 12:51

I just tried 3 blouses from the. All same size according to the label. BS they are all slightly different size. I felt like goldilocks🙄One was bit free, one was perfect and one was like size too small

UtterlyOtterly · 03/03/2024 13:02

I haven't changed sizes for decades, I measure and weigh the same (apart from pregnancy). I have gradually gone from an M&S 14 to their 8 in jeans. Vanity sizing I think they call it.

FourEyesGood · 03/03/2024 13:02

I think they might have made some of their sizing less generous, yes. I’m a size 14 and my older M&S trousers are on the loose side, whereas I bought some new ones a couple of weeks ago and they’re on the snug side.

Slanketblanket · 03/03/2024 13:07

No it's just inconsistent. If you'd bought five pairs they'd all be different sizes in my experience.

PainPerdu · 03/03/2024 13:11

I'm finding the opposite, I've recently bought a couple of pairs of jeans in my normal size and they're too big.

It may be just inconsistent sizing though.

RosesAndHellebores · 03/03/2024 13:40

Their sizing has gone to hell in a handcart. They no longer stock trousers in long, so have ceased catering for any woman over 5'6".

Generally they are inconsistent. Their black wildbloom bras are an inch smaller than the white/pastel ones.

I am close to giving up with them altogether although I think their styles have improved. I would venture more 100% cotton items. They still only stock one or two pure cotton nighties!

That’s simply not true ! 😂

Seriously though, I do think they do cater for (proportionately) middle-aged bigger waistlines - thank goodness!!!

SecondHandFurniture · 03/03/2024 13:45

It's all made in different factories, as they don't own their own, then has an M&S label sewn in. When I worked at a footwear retailer we had 4 factories using 4 slightly different lasts (moulds). H&M is particularly bad for this!

Goforitagain · 03/03/2024 13:48

The sizes are a little bit variable as I found when I bought 3 pairs of trousers recently. Though now I am old and have a thickened waistline I am finding they fit better. I am generally a 14L and they do generally fit within an inch or so which may be my aging body shape suits the clothes

I'm definitely not a size four so they are huge.

It's fine to cater for bigger sizes. But there's no need to sew in a label saying that a twelve is a size eight.

I can't buy a thing in there because I actually am a size eight. What's inclusive about that?

Goforitagain · 03/03/2024 13:53

I think they are cut for older people who generally wear looser clothes, I could probably fit into a 12, I'm 5' 10" but prefer the look and feel of a looser 14

Junglejunior · 03/03/2024 13:55

Hmm maybe inconsistent sizing then. Phew I’m quite sure I haven’t changed size since last year when I bought the other pair.

i also think M&S historically have come up big for me but these are supposedly a stretchy size 14 and I wasn’t expecting to not be able to easily get in them. I’m not size 16 anywhere else but looks like I’ll have to go get these in a bigger size.

But I think that’s good! We are all different shapes so if one manufacturer doesn’t size close to our shape, at least you have a chance that another one will IYSWIM.

On the whole I find M&S true to size (I’m a 16 in nearly all their clothes) but obviously in this situation it’s not always “exactly” the same which has its merits.

Goforitagain · 03/03/2024 13:59

One of the trousers I bought was tight round the waist, I'm definitely a standard 14 waist which nowadays is about 31-32" but these were more like a 12, when I was young in the 70s a size 14 was about a 26-27" waist

YorkieTheRabbit · 03/03/2024 14:03

Inconsistent sizing, I have two pairs of Sienna jeans, the black ones are smaller than the blue.
I bought some bras with matching Brazilian knickers, one set the knickers are far smaller despite them being the same design just different colours .
I only order online as the nearest store closed down so it’s basically a full day out to go shopping for knickers 😂

Cantonet · 03/03/2024 14:15

Totally inconsistent Sizing. I'm anything from a 12 to a size 18/20 in certain jackets. I'm actually a standard size 14 with square shoulders. A lot of the clothes are made for narrow shoulders & pear shaped bodies.

I'm 5'8 and their trousers are ridiculously long

Also can't find knickers that have a gusset for a sanitary towel

Goforitagain · 03/03/2024 14:24

I'm 5'10" and can usually only shop the long online, I'm about 33" inside leg and the long is generally about right for me, I wear flat shoes

It's not good! You should be able to go online to buy a pair of say M&S Sienna straight leg jeans in a 12 in blue that are the same size as the Sienna in black, but they aren't. I mean they're made in different factories across one brand to their own patterns.

Edit - I quoted your original unedited post.

Back21970 · 03/03/2024 14:33

I have several pairs of their jeggings and different colours do seem to be different sizes.

The red and khaki ones are way smaller than the denim or black.

Might be a different material blend or something but agree that you should be confident buying the same size without having to try everything on and with M&S that’s definitely not the case!

SausageRollsWithMustard · 03/03/2024 14:53

I've found this too recently. I'm a 14 in white stuff, fatface, seasalt etc but no idea what size I am in M&S anymore! I recently tried on some tracksuit trousers in a 16 and they were too small.

RosesAndHellebores · 03/03/2024 15:06

@idontlikealdi that amazes me. I have recently bought three pairs in regular and they have been half mast at the ankle. Not ankle grazers either. I am a 31" inside leg!
