Have M&S sizes unofficially changed?!

Or have I put on loads of weight! Bought a size 14 jeggins recently without trying them on and I literally had to chisel them off just now after finally wearing them. I already have several pairs in the same size which seem bigger than the new pair…

I haven't seen a "long" in store for a couple of seasons now.

I have given in and ordered a couple of.pairs of trousers from Boden. Fingers crossed!

Their sizing has gone to hell in a handcart. They no longer stock trousers in long, so have ceased catering for any woman over 5'6".

Generally they are inconsistent. Their black wildbloom bras are an inch smaller than the white/pastel ones.

I am close to giving up with them altogether although I think their styles have improved. I would venture more 100% cotton items. They still only stock one or two pure cotton nighties!

I’m 5’6 and I used to be regular length and now I’m short. And even those are sometimes too long.

SabrinaThwaite · 04/03/2024 00:06

I’m 5’6” and have to buy long. Regular are flapping above my ankle.

Go figure.

SoOutingWhoCares · 04/03/2024 00:12

I used the Boden "size checker" tool to find out what I should buy...

I'm consistently a size 12 in M&S and River Island so popped that in and it said this meant I would be a size 16 in Boden!!!

I would say I am pretty overweight and my BMI is unhealthy. I'm a good 3 stone off of slim. When I was a teen, a 12 was fairly slim.

So I definitely think there's been vanity sizing at M&S and it's about right that a 12 in there now is an "old school" 16.

But my vanity wouldn't allow me to buy a 16 from Boden so I ordered at 14.

And it was a bit too big!

Sizing is a nightmare these days.

What I have found recently at M&S is that all of a sudden I ended up having to buy short lengths last year. Their regular trousers and medium tights are more like the old long and large. I'm not "petite" but regular no longer fits.

I have found the opposite,I'm 5ft 10 and have to buy regular length now which is daft as I've always had to buy extra long at Marks before.

RosesAndHellebores · 04/03/2024 00:35

I am now completely confused!

@NoOrdinaryMorning my apologies, I meant in store. I often walk through and prefer to be able to see the item, especially trousers, and also feel the fabric. So many I would pick up and buy if they were a long. Based on feedback vis the regular now being longer, I have bought three pairs in the last month. They have all been too short. Perhaps they have been wrongly labelled.

Junglejunior · 04/03/2024 01:14

the trousers were black so maybe that’s why they’re so small. I don’t mind what size I need, I just want to be able to buy clothes from a store knowing the size is my size if I’m buying the same product but in a different colour.

RachelGreensHair · 04/03/2024 01:38

I bought some m&s knickers recently. Compared them to the knickers I have from other stores and the M&S ones are much much smaller despite the label size saying they're the same :/

I haven't changed sizes for decades, I measure and weigh the same (apart from pregnancy). I have gradually gone from an M&S 14 to their 8 in jeans. Vanity sizing I think they call it.

And this is why size 8’s can’t shop there.

thefallen · 04/03/2024 06:22

The sizing in some items is definitely less generous than it used to be. Particularly trousers.

OvaHere · 04/03/2024 06:45

Same. Not talking about M&S but over Xmas I ordered about £800 of work clothes from Next to try on. Mostly trousers. I'm 5'4 and previously regular has always worked for me. I notice all the trousers now come in regular and petite. Regular is clearly the new long because all but one pair were about 5 inches too long. I re ordered one pair in a petite and even that was a couple of inches longer than I would prefer. Not sure what women closer to 5ft are supposed to do if I'm now petite.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 04/03/2024 06:47

I find the opposite, I can go down a size or two in M&S. The trousers are made for pear shaped while I am not so the hips stick out like jodhpurs on me. I tend stop in H&M and Zara type places and normally take a 12 or 14. In M&S I can be anything from 8 to 12, the 12 mainly as I'm broad shouldered and have a large bust.

mitogoshi · 04/03/2024 06:50

Inconsistent. I bought a 3 pack of bras and one was 2cm smaller on the underbust! Staff started to refuse to refund as I had worn the other ones before returning saying they were a set before accepting it was faulty so normal returns rules differ.

ASighMadeOfStone · 04/03/2024 07:06

@RosesAndHellebores Boden is the only other company where I'm a 12L.
I can only order online from M&S and Boden knowing it's going to be OK. Though haven't ordered any for a few years since my beloved (best work trouser ever) Hampshire bootcut was discontinued.

Not clothes but today I bought a pair of shoes from m&s, every other shoe I am a size 6, today I had to buy a size 4

It’s not just M&S.
I’ve been size 5 for 30 years. Now I have shoes ranging from size 3 ( s Oliver) 4 ( Dunne ) and 6 (Office)

I have no idea what size I am clothes wise. I just have to try on in store ( which I hate ) cos if I buy without trying it means another trip out to return

Black jeans have always sized up small imo. I’ve old jeans from 20 years ago, the black are snug where as the blues I can take on and off still zipped and buttoned

MainlyMe · 04/03/2024 07:33

M&S used to spend a lot of time and money on "fit-models" - trying sample clothes on real people before putting them into mass production. My friend used to do it for them. Sounds like that might have fallen by the wayside.

The size 12 jeans I bought from them recently are huge, I've long been a 12-ish but definitely expanded since perimenopause but these jeans have a lot of spare size. Vantity sizing I think.

WrinklesShminkles · 04/03/2024 10:06

idontlikealdi · 03/03/2024 15:38

@namechange1986 it's too narrow = leakage. May be the delights of peri.

No, all their gussets are now too narrow. It's the same sort of cheese paring that affects the (unbelievably shallow) pockets in their women's jeans. M&S obviously think very little of their female customers - their men's clothing isn't subject to this shit.

RosesAndHellebores · 05/03/2024 21:22

I have received and tried on my Boden trousers.

One structured linen pair, size 16, R length. Absolutely perfect.

One less structured linen pair, size 16, L length. A little too big and far too long.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/11/2024 16:21

Sorry to open an old thread, but yes, clothes at M and S are running smaller this year 100%. By one size, I'd say.

GettingStuffed · 02/11/2024 21:53

I recently bought some trousers from them but I though after the event that I should have bought them a size bigger to deal with my bloating but they definitely fit in the smaller size.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/11/2024 21:56

I have the same size from two years ago and this month, and they are definitely different.

fashionqueen0123 · 02/11/2024 21:57

M&S are huge. I’m an 8-10 and can’t wear any of their bottoms so wouldn’t mind if they made them standard sizing.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/11/2024 00:04

They're not running smaller in my experience or shorter,I'm buying regular length and I'm 5ft 10!
