Have M&S sizes unofficially changed?!

Or have I put on loads of weight! Bought a size 14 jeggins recently without trying them on and I literally had to chisel them off just now after finally wearing them. I already have several pairs in the same size which seem bigger than the new pair…

But I think that’s good! We are all different shapes so if one manufacturer doesn’t size close to our shape, at least you have a chance that another one will IYSWIM.

On the whole I find M&S true to size (I’m a 16 in nearly all their clothes) but obviously in this situation it’s not always “exactly” the same which has its merits.

Edited

It's good if they're labelled differently! It's not good if they're all coded as "ITEM X" and not distinguishable at all.

It's not good! You should be able to go online to buy a pair of say M&S Sienna straight leg jeans in a 12 in blue that are the same size as the Sienna in black, but they aren't. I mean they're made in different factories across one brand to their own patterns.

Edit - I quoted your original unedited post.

Why so rude? You can be respectful. I don’t have to agree with you! I’m just setting out an alternative way of looking at things, the merits of manufacturers’ different measurements, which can (by accident) be helpful to people with different body shapes, and my view is just as valid as yours. We are not all exactly the same vital statistics and if different manufacturers reflect that, I’m not complaining (within reason).

PinkCool · 03/03/2024 15:19

Anyway hiding this silly bunfight attituuuude.

Donthideyourlight · 03/03/2024 15:21

I buy from M&S sometimes and would say they're inconsistent rather than all massive or all small.

For example I find their pants (as in knickers) and jeans quite big but their work trousers and dresses a bit small.

fatphalange · 03/03/2024 15:26

Black jeans always seem to be smaller sizing than their blue shaded counterparts so it could be that?

ASighMadeOfStone · 03/03/2024 15:27

Goforitagain · 03/03/2024 14:24

I'm 5'10" and can usually only shop the long online, I'm about 33" inside leg and the long is generally about right for me, I wear flat shoes

Same here. 32 inside leg and an M&S long is perfect.

I haven't noticed any sizing difference tbh. I'm a 12 in a trouser and a 16 in a top and virtually everything I own is from M&S these days. I know I can order online and the sizing will be spot on.

H&M are batshit re sizes. I need an 18 in a top and it's snug. Unless it's a top that's sized L, XL etc in which case I need an M.

I can't buy anything other than coats in Zara as I am clearly morbidly obese in their eyes.

The opposite to Next whose vanity sizing tries to convince me I'm an 8. Yeah right. That's my feet but nothing else.

ASighMadeOfStone · 03/03/2024 15:29

@Junglejunior could it be that jeggings are meant to be very very skinny fit? I had some of the M&S ones (12L as usual) and couldn't wear them. I could get them on, but looked repulsive (camel toe well and truly hideously present) and couldn't breathe.

namechange1986 · 03/03/2024 15:33

@idontlikealdi Gusset for a sanitary towel? Have I missed something ... I just fold the wings either side of the pants?

idontlikealdi · 03/03/2024 15:36

RosesAndHellebores · 03/03/2024 15:06

@idontlikealdi that amazes me. I have recently bought three pairs in regular and they have been half mast at the ankle. Not ankle grazers either. I am a 31" inside leg!

The black wide trousers at £17.50 are ridiculous, waaaaaay too long!

idontlikealdi · 03/03/2024 15:38

@namechange1986 it's too narrow = leakage. May be the delights of peri.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 03/03/2024 15:50

Their sizes are big if anything. I'm 10-12 nearly everywhere and their 8 trousers are baggy in the front like a pouch for mens tackle 🤔

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 03/03/2024 16:10

I don't even know what size I am anymore.
There's everything from 8-14 in my wardrobe. I don't believe I was ever an 8 or 14 but definitely moved between 10 and 12 both ways over the years

10 fits me in most things now but I think 10 has gotten bigger as opposed to me getting smaller.

I find M&S jeans very generous but their trousers appear more accurate.

Goforitagain · 03/03/2024 16:26

The straight leg joggers I find fit perfectly, some went into the sale so I stocked up, usually I find something I like and it gets discontinued like my favourite midi pants, luckily I had stocked up on those as well.

lindyloo57 · 03/03/2024 16:52

I've always worn a ten in marks jeans lily's and senna and skirts, but recently 10s too tight 12 too big

MzHz · 03/03/2024 17:44

PainPerdu · 03/03/2024 13:11

I'm finding the opposite, I've recently bought a couple of pairs of jeans in my normal size and they're too big.

It may be just inconsistent sizing though.

I bought 2 pairs of leggings a while back, went to buy another, ordered same size and they’re baggy. Ok so I’ve kept them because it’s not a bad look, a different style but not at all what I was expecting

I’ve bought 3 pairs and as my previous post, the last pair was same ordered size but now swimming on me.

id go down a size if I was to get another pair

bet that’s wrong too tho.

Their sizing has gone to hell in a handcart. They no longer stock trousers in long, so have ceased catering for any woman over 5'6".

Generally they are inconsistent. Their black wildbloom bras are an inch smaller than the white/pastel ones.

I am close to giving up with them altogether although I think their styles have improved. I would venture more 100% cotton items. They still only stock one or two pure cotton nighties!

They still do 'long' in some things - most nice things are out of stock though.

Partridgewell · 03/03/2024 21:39

It's very inconsistent, as others have said. I have size 10 jeans and skirts that fit, and size 12 work trousers that are uncomfortably snug. I do have to be careful though, as I am a classic pear, so rarely find something that fits well on both waist and hips.

SabrinaThwaite · 03/03/2024 22:14

I recently bought 2 pairs of M&S size 12 Lily jeans in different colours - definitely not the same fit.

40 years, 2 stone and 2 children ago I was also an M&S size 12.

Minihippyme89 · 03/03/2024 22:16

Not clothes but today I bought a pair of shoes from m&s, every other shoe I am a size 6, today I had to buy a size 4

peachgreen · 03/03/2024 22:22

I’ve found the opposite! I’m a 16–20 everywhere else but I have stuff from M&S in a 12!

KeeeeeepDancing · 03/03/2024 22:41

There is a reason why black clothes are smaller- the dye process shrinks in black more than other colours.
I guess that's what you pay for with higher end brands, that they design the cutting out process for the factory to take into account the shrinkage. M&S will be on tight margins in volume production so I reckon they don't bother.

Onelifeonly · 03/03/2024 22:47

I have never really put on weight, but haven't got smaller either. I used to be a size 10 in M&S and most other shops, then 8 for a long time, now I often have to get a size 6. Though it varies and sometimes an 8 is right on me. I tried on some shirts of theirs a few weeks back and the 6 in one style was actually the same size as the 8.....

Their sizing has gone mad. I order at least 2 of everything to see what will fit. Sometimes, none, I needed the third size! I have still been buying long trousers. Though I do all my shopping online. I cannot be doubt with hoking for sizes.
