Communal changing rooms in places like Miss Selfridge. So glad that these, to my knowledge, don’t exist any longer.

OP posts:

Puffball skirts
Blouses with bows at the neck
Three quarter length trousers
The Laura Ashley frilly, short sleeved cotton blouse - everyone had one 40 years ago!
Jelly shoes
Hipster trousers
Denim shorts so short they left the wearer cheeky
Fine flesh coloured leggings
Anything brown
Tank tops worn with satin blouses with flowing arms and long buttoned cuffs
Halter necks
Summer boots
Hotpants
Ballgowns
Taffeta
BoPeep Wedding dresses

I quite like the clothes in the shops at present.

Thin 90s eyebrows (I know we laugh about insta brows but the pluck all your brows out and re draw them in with a sharpie look was waaaay worse)

Chunky badger style highlights.

Super tight spray on skinny jeans- made people look like walking parsnips

Stacked bobs- admitted tainted by the “I want to speak to the manager” meme

Grunge. Bloody awful- as if smudged mascara and looking like a smack head looked good on anyone except Kate moss

Curtains hairstyle for men and also that hideous Bieber haircut where it looked like he was doing a combover but with ALL his hair at once

White lipstick lined with brown lip liner

Gypsy tops - huge floaty puffy monstrosities that make everyone look as if they’re hiding a pregnancy

Huge shoulder pads. Because why is looking like a linebacker meant to be attractive for women?

Clompy 90s heels - why was everything so square?!

You’re post took me back to my childhood 😭 I loved all of these things!

So did I but hindsight is wonderful 😂

Shadowonasun · 24/02/2024 22:19

Every single thing from the 80s: clothes, hair, makeup, everything. What a tragedy of a decade fashion-wise. I just cannot believe it when I see photos/vids, just what were they thinking???

A boon during mass vaccinations, though.

They really were. The only time I’ve ever thought they made sense. When you had an enormous queue of people waiting for their vaccine it was brilliant to have immediate access rather than have to wait until they struggled out of several layers of the most unsuitable clothing to wear to a mass vaccination centre.

Ugg boots
Thongs
Cold shoulder tops
Belly button piercings
Straightened hair
Alien perfume
Snow washed or stone washed denim
Wet look hair gel
Winkle pickers
Clogs
Cowboy boots

FrangipaniBlue · 24/02/2024 22:50

Big back combed fringes.

Back combed "bumps" on the top of your hair. There's a girl near me still wears her hair like this and she honestly to god looks like Jonny in Hotel Transylvania 2 when they try to disguise him as a vampire.

MidnightMeltdown · 24/02/2024 22:58

Kappa Jackets, gelled hair all scraped back into a ponytail, anything with a playboy bunny symbol on it

stclair · 24/02/2024 23:09

Thong leotards, frosted lipstick. Banana clips!

Dream matte mousse.

However I long for the return of pashminas, ballet pumps and gypsy style tops as they really suit me.

Here's Vogue's 2023 article announcing the return of ballet flats.

I expect 2024's article will be around soon. It appears every year.

The ballet pump is back.

As someone who never stopped wearing dresses over trousers I'm pleased I will be slightly fashionable for a week or two.
I've lived long enough to know that fashion is a fickle boomerang but fervently hope that white stilettos remain in 80s Essex disco land where they belong.

As someone who never stopped wearing dresses over trousers

Why? I really don't understand why anyone would do this.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 25/02/2024 01:12

Sorry I know my question looks rude. It's just a look where I could never see what the point is was.

Time40 · 25/02/2024 01:14

Dream matte mousse

The Maybelline foundation? That still exists.

I still wear bright tights🙄 think the perm.is making a come back🤣

Noooooo lol, this is slightly outing but there is a pic of me aged about 3 with a perm because my mum decided to try it out on me first O_o. Horrible stuff.

@PudgeControlsTheWeather I am sorry to be the one to break it to you😂😂https://www.stylist.co.uk/fashion/how-to-style-dresses-over-jeans/866859

Oh, this is NOT OKAY!

TheLeadbetterLife · 25/02/2024 09:23

Heels. They’re not even wearing them on The Apprentice this year.

TheMildManneredMilitant · 25/02/2024 09:25

Aww this thread is making me nostalgic. There's a lot of stuff I wouldn't personally wear (now) but had so much fun with at the time. Flattering never came into it! Now I'm middle aged and trying to get back to that mindset of clothes for fun rather than making me blend in/look as small as possible.

(Although I'm with you on communal changing rooms and those pornstar/playboy t shirts).

I was in my 20s in the 80s. I loved some of the Laura Ashley dresses, the velvet headbands, the coloured tights (I am wearing these again), jewel coloured cardigans and tops from Benetton, navy polka dot skirts, sleevless giblets, cotton pie crust collar blouses, and flat courts with bows and gilt.Blush

DerekFaker · 25/02/2024 12:54

I don't remember dresses over jeans being massively popular in the UK. I just remember American teen stars like Britney Spears and Hilary Duff wearing them.

Maybe my brain blocked out the trauma 😂

fightingthedogforadonut · 25/02/2024 13:10

Those awful global hypercolour tees. Why anyone would want to draw attention to the fact they were hot and sweaty is beyond me....

sanferryanne · 25/02/2024 13:33

80s jumpsuits à la Sheena Easton. I had one in turquoise, what on earth was I thinking?!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/02/2024 13:42

Donkey Jacket (or BinMan Coat as they were called ) they were actually quite nice and functional , single breasted darkest navy or black ...but then they evolved to be a bit over sized and cape like

Black tights and skirts with heeled court shoes in red/green/yellow/royal bue (just "No" )

Those hair irons that gave you waves (if you didn't have one you had to do tiny plaits and let it dry . Less damaging though )

Big jumpers tucked into jeans a la Haircut 100

BodyShop Extra Red Henna - smelled like an old ashtray , looked like cow turd , took hours to clean up, while you set aside an entire day to do the process ...but the glossiest auburn locks imaginable .

I'm still raging that I didn't get Monty Don earrings that had a crystal stud/pearl pear-drop and a tiny bow where they join .
But I did get some crystal/silver similar style in Argos

Sudename · 25/02/2024 13:45
