We haven't long moved into our home and i desperately need a vanity area. I have so much stuff in boxes (hair strangers, curlers, makeup perfume etc) that I don't want to leave lying around as I have small children. And DP would also like a bit of space to trim his beard and shave his head 😂 his words not mines.

I don't have a massive amounts of space. So I was looking for some inspiration for our bedroom.

Thanks!

Loving the thread. Some gorgeous dressing tables.

I know it's not my bedroom, but we turned our box room into a dressing room. Got the vanity unit free on a local "buy/sell" group, painted it chalk white, and got other half to put some shelves and rails up. Natural light comes in over vanity unit so I don't need extra lighting. I also salvaged his tool box from the garage that he was going to chuck away which is perfect for more of my "CRAP" (his words not mine) 😅🤣👏👏@

No pic but my old dressing table at my old house was the best. We got 2x identical chest of drawers and then purchased a plank of wood in the width of the drawers and the length of them together plus about 90cm and stuck it on top, so there was space for a chair under and it doubled up as a desk. Then floating shelves above it and a huge mirror on the wall to cover the length. It was perfect. I worked there, got ready there and all my clothes were stored there. Gutted new house bedroom was too small for it.

Not my pic but similar to what we did

Mine is the shelf in the bathroom 😂

dudsville · 04/02/2024 20:20

I bought an antique one just as we moved house and then never collected it as we referbed a walk in dressing room that had a deep set window. I propped a mirror up there and that's where i do my hair, which i also sit to do! I could never do my makeup away from the bathroom as i wash my hands a lot when doing it.

Where would you put it? Can you make an area in your bedroom?

The thing I find awkward with vanity tables is the height. No one blow dries their hair sitting down. I think I would rather have a lit mirror at my face height, and a small dresser for all my stuff. Just like your bathroom vanity without the sink! In fact most vanities are sold with the wood base and then you buy the counter and sink separately. Just replace the sink top with solid surface.

Look for a small cabinet or sideboard about counter height, add a nice mirror, make sure there is an electrical outlet nearby.

Wait what. I’ve literally never blow dried my hair stood up. I always sit at my dressing table… and before I had that I used to sit on the floor next to a full length mirror.

My DH made this for me a few weeks ago, he's a carpenter, just need a seat to go under now

Clever DH custom made for you 💕

Rummikub · 05/02/2024 00:44

That’s really nice. Great idea with the shallower drawer on top.

Paw2024 · 05/02/2024 00:59

I dry my hair in the living room, perfumes live on a floating shelf
I have a dressing table but I'm a huge makeup fan and people will judge hard if I share a pic!

I assume vanity area is an Americanism. Can't decide if it's intended to convey the impression of something larger or smaller than a dressing table. It sounds 'fancy' but is actually a far more prejorative term than dressing table.

'Dressing' means 'to put straight or arrange' whereas 'vanity' comes from the latin for 'empty'.

As a non-native English speaker, 'dressing table' sounds posher to me - gives me Downtown Abbey vibes 😃 (which is a nice thing in my book)

How do you blow dry your hair?! I’ve only ever done it sat at a dressing table.

Men have their garage, shed, greenhouse. Why shouldn't we have a dressing table.

emmylousings · 05/02/2024 13:50

Fun thread. I know it's not really the point but can I just stand united with the one other person who also stands up whilst drying hair! I have a completely stand-up vanity area come to think of it..

ShangaLangCleg · 05/02/2024 19:35

If you are interested in antique / vintage furniture, what about checking out your local auction houses?
You can also scroll through previous auctions to see how much the items went for.

Unless you are sure about what you are doing it would be better to take a friend who knows their antiques a little and check for woodworm which is usually visible on the back of the item and in the drawers, broken or sticking drawers (sometimes repairable), hidden damage etc.
You'd also need to confirm with the auction house how much commission and VAT you would be charged on top of the hammer price.
Not wanting to put you off though, as it's good fun and there's always a chance that there will be some stunning pieces in the sale. I have a fantastic marble-topped wash stand with a matching knee-hole dressing table which holds far too much of my rubbish all lotions and potions, tongs, gloves, hats and scarves etc.

I was beginning to think I was a bit weird ! Thank goodness someone else dries their hair standing up!

This isn’t mine but mine is very similar.
White vanity unit with glass top (means no make up stains) from Next. Navy velvet pouffe also from Next. Hollywood mirror from a company called, Illuminated Mirrors. I think the mirror was about £280.

I just got a pine desk from a local 2nd hand shop. Then just put a mirror on it. Only£ 30.
