Does anyone have a vanity area? If so, pic please?

We haven't long moved into our home and i desperately need a vanity area. I have so much stuff in boxes (hair strangers, curlers, makeup perfume etc) that I don't want to leave lying around as I have small children. And DP would also like a bit of space to trim his beard and shave his head 😂 his words not mines.

I don't have a massive amounts of space. So I was looking for some inspiration for our bedroom.

Thanks!

Thank you!

I have 1 for hair and 1 for make up; with a chair, face height mirror and full length ‘skinny’ mirror in the middle. My face creams are all in the bathroom.

I haven’t got lots of space but have just bought this small mahogany antique table, mainly because I have a mahogany dressing table mirror and stand bought years ago. Just need to get a chair now!

Get a glass top made for this

@Happilyobtuse - I like that 1950s style dressing table, but be careful ordering from Weilai - there are lots of bad reviews online for this company, plus glowing ones that may be fake. It’s a Chinese company so expect longish delivery times.

Dee1224 · 01/02/2024 18:14

@BitchyHen and @FortunataTagnips - I love your tables!

NetZeroZealot · 01/02/2024 18:19

So we are calling dressing tables 'vanity tables' now?

FortunataTagnips · 01/02/2024 18:36

No. No, we are not.

theduchessofspork · 01/02/2024 19:04

Ilovemyshed · 31/01/2024 21:14

I blow dry my hair sitting at my dressing table. Always have.

Me too -

when did it stop being called a dressing table and become a ‘vanity area’?!

It does does slightly call to mind a vajazzle.. 💓

Finally got my spare room turned into my dressing room lol, oak dressing table with mirror, i’ve bought this to store hairdryer and straighteners etc, far easier than putting away all the time, and no tangled wires, does look quite stylish too i think.

I have something a bit different - a computer desk a bit like this although mine has twin pedestals. I’m able to have my hair dryer plugged in to an extension socket inside the cupboard since it has vents in the back (for the computer/printer) and everything is tidied away without wires being visible when I’m not using it. I keep makeup in the drawers and I’ve bought a jewellery compartment tray for the keyboard drawer. I have a 10x magnifying mirror on top to frighten myself 😳

I don’t use straighteners, but I’d investigate heatproof materials to line the shelves if I did.

Thank you very much for these ideas.

I’ve been after a dressing table for decades. We finally have our own home and I was going to treat myself to a dressing table, even been saving up a few pounds per month for one.

Sadly I have to share the bedroom with DP and he’s converted other bedroom into home office. He has then had his wfh desk changed and put one very similar to this in our bedroom! I was utterly unimpressed, its been driving me nuts for a year as he’s moved my chest of drawers to my planned dressing table area by one of the windows (not wide enough for the desk) and ‘given’ me his old desk as a ‘gift’ of my planned dressing table.

But your ideas might work. So far I’ve got my pretty jewellery boxes on it but the drop down keyboard section nothing seems to fits. What sort of stool do you use please? I’ve got an old dining chair currently but the heights not right so can’t use that to sit at the desk.

KittyMcKitty · 01/02/2024 20:16

This is mine (apologies for slightly funny angle but trying to avoid being in a mirror). I know mid century modern isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I love it! Bought from eBay for around £30 I think. Make up and skin care is in the ensuite as that has a backlit mirror.

Finally got a dressing table after about 20 years

Perfect. The others shown are far too small.

MrsElsa · 01/02/2024 20:33

Two floating shelves, like this.

This is Pinterest inspo, dare say mine is nicer haha. I have 2 little fluffy stools from The Range for myself and DD. Fits perfectly into the bedroom and takes up nearly no space.

Jazzed it up with a nice mini wall shelf unit for perfumes in pretty bottles. DIY floral wreath around mirror.

All my daily make up is in a box as shown in the pic. Have a naice jam jar for make up brushes on top.

It works so well, really recommend if you have little room but want to make a lovely space.

What a great thread - I love seeing all your photos and ideas. I don’t really have one (unless you count the brightly lit vanity unit round the sink in my bathroom - in too much of a communal area to really count), but I recently spotted this at a vintage fair in Paris - 1960s, Italian, covered in white fur - yours for €1,000! Not sure if you can see on the picture, but it’s hinged the middle so can fold up to form a white fur column.

MrsElsa · 01/02/2024 20:39

For queries on stool height etc, I bought the stools and the shelves and then sat and measured to hang the shelves at the exact right height smug likewise the mirror, perfect for me. No perching or slouching required!

mdinbc · 01/02/2024 21:36

Well I stand corrected! I had no idea so many people sat to do hair and makeup.
I do all my prettying up in the bathroom; it's well lit and I have room for everything. DH and I wake at different times so we never have a conflict for space.

Some really nice ideas on here.

Theforeverhome · 01/02/2024 21:40

@Tbry24 I use one of our spare dining chairs rather than a stool. It’s a wooden Victorian chair so works reasonably well with the oak desk.

This is my fantasy vanity area. Sadly it couldn't be reconstructed in Reading !

OP Could you possibly show a photo of your hair strangers?

They sound interesting. I'm intrigued.

Thanks in advance.

👍

I’ve trawled through the comments to see if anyone else didn’t know what a hair stranger was!

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 01/02/2024 23:53

Make up in drawers, creams in bathroom.
There's a large cupboard out of shot which houses hair dryer and straighteners.

I used to have the same one as @Reemtotheextreme but changed it about 18 months ago and put the old one in the spare room.

vegetableplotter · 02/02/2024 09:56

This is what I use. I have a mirror on the inside of both doors, and a light on the inside of one door.

Power nearby for hairdryer etc which I store in the drawer. Make-up etc on the shelves. It works brilliantly and I can shut all my mess away.

You can change the handles, and paint it if you like.
