We haven't long moved into our home and i desperately need a vanity area. I have so much stuff in boxes (hair strangers, curlers, makeup perfume etc) that I don't want to leave lying around as I have small children. And DP would also like a bit of space to trim his beard and shave his head 😂 his words not mines.

I don't have a massive amounts of space. So I was looking for some inspiration for our bedroom.

Thanks!

@justanothermanicmonday1

I don't have one. At times when I did they just got too dusty/messy & drove me nuts.

i don't wear make up & don't blow dry my hair. When I did, it was standing & away from furniture as it was very long & too tricky do do.(or sitting on the edge of the bed).

I have a tall boy & on the top have deodorant, brush, perfume on the top of that which I just use standing.

I'm really not a girly girl & find them too girlie/fussy💁🏻‍♀️

If I could do anything for a vanity area it would be a kidney shaped dressing table with a silk ruffle as I’ve seen in the rooms of a few homes on Instagram. I think Alice Poshsomethingorother (genuinely can’t remember her name sorry but I bet someone can help me remember it) with the tablescaping business might be the first place I saw that setup… very old fashioned and romantic! Probably not practical for storage or husbands.

@CountryCob No I don't have the wall shelves as to the left is a window/curtains (no wall the other side either). I've lived in relatively modern properties for the last 15 years (currently one from around 1980) so have basically trained myself out of older looking furniture.

FortunataTagnips · 01/02/2024 10:26

This is mine. I got it v cheap in an auction and I absolutely love it. One of the drawers is velvet-lined for jewellery.

Some beautiful examples. I really wish I had space for a vanity. Everywhere we move there is never enough space for a wardrobe, chest of drawers, desk etc. So my stuff ends up divided everywhere.
I would love this one day I found this on La Redoute https://lr.app.link/7vqyytMFPGb

EarthaKittsVoice · 01/02/2024 10:46

I dry my hair sitting down also

JaninaDuszejko · 01/02/2024 10:53

My Mum has a lovely antique desk she uses.

I've got a very ugly dressing table as part of our in built wardrobes (they are about 40 years old, badly designed and very shoogly). I never use it. When we replace the wardrobes I do want to get a free standing dressing table/desk (DH or I sometimes work in the bedroom if the house is very busy). I'm not into makeup or blow drying my hair but need jewellery and perfume storage.

Norugratsatall · 01/02/2024 11:02

@TheAirbender I would love to see a picture of it if you don't mind. I have inherited a writing bureau from my grandma and would love to do something like this with it.

Danniotley · 01/02/2024 11:16

I do. I love my dressing table and mirror. Plug socket underneath so hairdryer is always plugged in and all my make up in one place.

OP Could you possibly show a photo of your hair strangers?

They sound interesting. I'm intrigued.

Thanks in advance.

👍

I blow dry my hair sitting at my dressing table. Always have.

Same here, I am 60 and have never stood to blow dry nor straighten my hair

Runningandrenovating · 01/02/2024 12:47

I got this for all my hair tools - it’s huge and has pockets around the side which are perfect for curlers, straighteners etc:

use it as the stool for my built in dressing table inbetween wardrobes like someone else posted (only just had it built so needs painting and touching up around)

I have an antique art deco dressing table. They really knew how to make furniture then. The thing is enormous and really solid, like a battleship. I wouldn't be without it though and it's probably where I spend most of my time at home other than my bed.

I had one growing up, my mum always had one, my grandmother did too so it's a non-negotiable for me.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having an area in your home that is absolutely and unashamedly just for you (a whole room is even better if you've got the space).

On the downside, if I'm staying away from home and have to do my hair in make up using a wall mirror or on a chest of drawers I am totally useless. No versatility and resilience whatsoever because I'm used to my home comforts to much.

Fabricwitch · 01/02/2024 13:25

I would recommend getting a seat with extra storage underneath, I have this one: Velvet Ottoman Storage Cube

NewYear24 · 01/02/2024 13:34

I have one of these as well as a white wooden dressing table I posted earlier on the thread.

Gawd. Mine is the ironing board 😩

Finally got a dressing table after about 20 years

Ooh I love the small wicker baskets! Where are they from?

Anyotherdude · 01/02/2024 13:47

@mdinbc I sit down to dry my hair! I have a bedside wardrobe with a full-length mirror on the inside of the door, surrounded by an LED strip, and sit on the bed to dry or style my hair. All my hair accessories are stored in a box on one of the shelves of this wardrobe, and I also use this mirror for applying makeup (also kept in this wardrobe), but do that while standing at the mirror.
My husband shaves in the bathroom, and we chose to not have a vanity unit when refitting our bedroom, opting for a small sofa instead, so that we can use the room for reading, talking and taking refuge from the DC!
It works for us😁

Tracker1234 · 01/02/2024 13:50

I love a dressing table. Hairdryer to hand along with GHD's plus skincare without rooting around in bathroom. Also have a large pile of cotton pads to hand and various hair clips (that I can never find if I didnt have my dressing table

Aprichor · 01/02/2024 14:29

I don’t have a dressing table but I do have a cabinet a bit like this https://www.dunelm.com/product/samira-small-cabinet-1000133599. Mine is a bit taller than this and less bedside table looking but it gives the idea

Make up in the drawer in a divider tray and other toiletries in the cupboard. I do have a free standing mirror on the top but only use it for checking the back of my hair. I do my hair/makeup standing up using my wardrobe mirror. I used to keep my hair dryer and straighteners in the cupboard but kept knocking stuff out every time I used them so now they’re in a holder at the side

@Runningandrenovating I have just ordered that stool thank you! We are also renovating, love Dunelm

Here's mine: a vintage 'Wrighton' dressing table painted in Annie Sloane 'Emperors Silk'. I LOVE sitting here pampering and peering at my pores in the light-up make-up miror 😂
